In todays video we get ready to take the BMW to Mikey Dove for prep, we get the kit car on the trailer ready for Castle Combe, also we have some worrying news that an engine we built has a problem with the bearing on the crank, we need it back asap or the engine could blow up

Went on a speed awareness course a few years ago. Part way through there was a fire alarm so the course was running late. At the end everyone was late so poured out and set off at 50/60 mph up a 40 limit dual carriageway, INCLUDING the two trainers who, shortly before, had been self righteously telling us how evil it was to break the speed limit! Total hypocrites.

Really stand up manufacturer to take the ultimate position of accepting all levels of responsibility for the problem. I am impressed as there are few who would make the similar stand and take that huge whack. Keep 'em coming Lee, makes my day when ya'll post something.

I've only scanned the last ten or so comments before posting this, and Houchins states the case very well. But I'd add....*just in case this complicates* and you get stuck 'holding the bag'...run it past your solicitor to get a binding pledge from the component supplier that once you start into disassembly, they are legally liable for all costs entailed. You state (gist) 'It's a highly reputable supplier'...so this looks very good, and if they are, they will fully understand your asking them to sign a binding agreement.

Unless the engine has a main girdle with all the main caps integral, you can drop the oil pan and roll the upper bearing shells out and the new ones in. To plastigage for clearance on the crank mains, what I have done on lorry engines, is to put a piece of cardboard like from a cigarette package between the cap and the crank on say #2 and #4 and just snug the main bolts on those two. This holds the crank up to get an accurate plastigage reading on 1,3 and 5. Put cardboard in 1,3 and 5 after those clearances are verified so that 2 and 4 can be measured. Once the plastigage is read on 2 and 4, those can be torqued. Now remove the cardboard and install the rest of the mains. Con rods do not need the cardboard treatment. Saves pulling the engine in most cases. The restoration shop could possibly do this, or you could on the lift. Darn nusance to do, but so is engine R&R. Used to do this somewhat regularly as heavy trucks required a bearing roll every 250,000 miles or 400,000km. The diesels hammered the bearings so eventually the bearing shells would fatigue and flake away like sand. Usually worked out to every second or third year for long haul trucks.

Get a voucher for the warranty labor from the parts company before the car even leaves the customer. Also, get the bearing company to handle directly without you, the arrangements with the installer. Huge risk every step on a resto, no expense spared job. One nick in the paint on the chassis and all the profit is gone.

Have to praise the manufacturer and also the parts distributor for informing Barum on the issue they have found and also offering to cover costs. Alot of part manufacturers would of just buried there head in the sand and blamed someone else in the chain of building/fitting of the engine when something fails. Yes it's a bit of messing round for the customer but if I was them I would be made up in being told about the issue and it would only reinforce the relationship and trust in the companies that was involved in the rebuild of the Lanny.

Protecting the seats in the Kit Car during transportation. Before your next run at the track, could you find someone to make custom waterproof seat covers out of the same material as a yellow rain slicker. That material is heavy duty and thick. Try to find covers with a UV coating too. Yeah, custom covers are going to be expensive. However, the cost of the covers will be well worth it. Another, simpler idea. Here in the states when you are putting your boat away for winter storage, a marinas do offer to cover the entire boat in a white shrink wrap. When heat is applied, the wrap shrinks to fit tightly around the covered area thus sealing the boat up against the harsh weather and any animals/rodents from getting inside. The shrink wrap comes in handy rolls that can be carried to and from the track easily. This will allow you to reseal the seating area again before coming back home. The shrink wrap comes in various mils thickness. I would imagine you could buy a shite load of rolls of this material compared to the cost of customized seat covers. Good luck sorting it all out.

For your seats, get a pair of jeep waterproof covers for those rainy days, I feel like those should be a worldwide sort of item. As for warranty, definitely quickly inform customers of the recall, as well as get a written letter from the company stating all the covered expenses and full inspection process, I have plenty of experience performing recalled repairs and there has always been a technical document of what's to be done. Follow the instructions to the letter and you won't have to worry about the expenses.

Imagine if that LR engine grenanded the bottom end due to a spun bearing. The usual crowd would be crowing about 'another Barum engine warranty claim!" And yet, fortunately we know its a dodgy component because you've got someone with decent supply chain claims monitoring going on. But just shows you how easy it is for these things to be laid at your door. You have to assume the components you are supplied with are up to the job.

In general the recommendation was a max of 30 over on a Rover V8, some even suggest 20 thou. Seen a few beyond that but you do see some end up with a loose liner. I think I've got a block around here that's 60 over which must be the absolute extreme.

Ex warranty claim assesor here, about the bearings, if you inform the customer within a timely manner, that would be your first tier the 4x4 specialist, the warranty, in case of engine damage, will be with the bearing manufacturer and not with yourself. It is amicable that the manufacturer takes responsibility. Some vehicle manufacturers I worked for don't say anything and fix it when a vehicle comes in for a service and keep it quiet that there is a concern even if there is a safety factor involved. The only manufacturer I worked for that doesn't hide anything at all is Toyota and they don't hang about getting vehicles in to fix the concern even if it might not go wrong. I rather deal with that inconvenience than a breakdown or worse. I haven't worked for every manufacturer so I can only speak for my experience three manufacturers and knowledge of practises of a few others.

I think it's decent they've let you know about the problem Lee. Just get Devon 4x4 to get the vehicle back and drop the sump and swap the shells. Presume it's the 2.1/4 not the 2.0? Over the years we've had bearing manufacturers make bearings (in batches of 100's) in the wrong crank size, tag location, integral thrusts too wide etc. From the expensive end of the scale to the cheap. Can be a right pita. Had it this week with a customer in Norway. Bearings labelled as .020" turns out our supplier sent .050". Had to send replacements. Bearing delamination is a tough one though as you inspect the shells and you wouldn't necessarily know there's a problem. I've noticed some of the Genuine Lister Petter stuff at the moment is shocking quality. Coming out of China I believe.

If I was the owner of the LR with the dodgy bearings, I like to know, it actually increases my confidence, as the manufacturer is standing behind their product and taking it on the chine that they need to pay to strip engines and get the bearings out. Would I be miffed, yes. but given a failure could do massive damage to the engine I'd rather get it fixed than possible have to scrap the engine

I was thinking something similar. To keep things dry while towing make a fiberglass top. Should be quite easy to have mostly sealed up if you stretch thick polythene over top and lay f-glass directly over that. Making it 'prettier' would need fair bit of extra work with more rigid set up (still pretty easy though)

Delaminating bearings are NOT good! Years ago when I worked for Deutz we had a main bearing go and it was a real head scratcher! Looking at the shell there was a strange pattern of spalling where the Babbit came off the copper. Sat at my desk for a while looking at it and then it hit me! The pattern was numbering, but in reverse. One of the numbers was a German 7! My theory was that there had been a wax or grease pencil mark on one of the layers which wasn't properly cleaned off before the layers were laminated. Showed it to my boss (a 50 State PE here in the US). He stared at it for a while and then said: "I see the spalling, but it looks strange". I said: "See the reverse German 7?" He broke up!

I paid the fine and took the points when I got a ticket. I would have lost more money doing the course. This will be different for everyone, if I got another ticket then taking the fine/points may have been a bad idea. Re paying for the engine work would probably be far cheaper than the parts potentially scrapping the block which the owner may want repaired at any cost because it's the original and they would never fit anything else. A bit of a pain all around and fingers crossed they remove/replace the engine without doing any other damage.

This sounds like a no brainer to me. Good thing this company maintains a log of parts and where they come from for the purpose of traceability. Excellent manufacturing standards. Get what is to be done by Barum in writing, include the pricing details. Barum signs off and dates the agreement, faxes the agreement to the company wanting the work done. They sign and date the agreement, too, and fax the doc back to you. Then the work can begin. Both parties must sign the doc in blue pen before faxing. Blue is the only color that transfers in a fax. Blue indicates the docs are NOT copies, but originals. The days of a phone call or a good handshake are done. Get it all in writing. CYA = Cover Your Ass.

It’s easy to think you are a good driver until you go on a speed awareness course. Then you realise that you are not so good. You can argue about the appropriateness of a particular road and speed limit but the fact if you are not aware of that speed limit, the camera warning signs, your speed - then what else are you unaware of?
