Owner of this brand-new 2022 Subaru Impreza drove over 2 hours for me to diagnose...a 12V outlet?
He took it to the Subaru Dealer that diagnosed a bad outlet, replaced it, but it still DIDN'T WORK.
Now they want to charge him $150/hr for "further diagnostics"...
Let's see what we find and if we can fix this new Subaru with No Parts Required ;)
MAGIC TEST LIGHT:

Enjoy!

I believe this was a deliberate act on the part of the dealer. It's impossible for anyone to be that incompetent. It's too bad the dealer name can't be mentioned for this video, and also for the recent Eric O video where the dealer wanted to replace rack & pinion, trailer brake module and other things because of a corroded ground cable. Something has happened over the last year or so at dealerships especially with regard to their service departments, where customer service has gone straight into the toilet. I mean it was never really all that great, but as of recently it has hit absolute rock bottom with their lies and sleazoid tactics. I am convinced this has to have something to do with lack of revenue stream, and they are being given a directive to maximize profit, including intentional misdiagnoses and "tricks" (such as not plugging in a 12 volt outlet properly) to fool the customer into paying way above and beyond what would actually fix the problem. My local Honda dealer has even stopped doing oil changes on Hondas that have 10 years or 125,000 miles and up. The only explanation can be that those service jobs don't generate enough revenue or they are trying to get customers to trade the car in and pay outrageously overinflated prices for a newer model. It even extends to the sales department where dealerships are trying to get away with surprise markups for stuff like wheel locks, window tint, "paint oxidation protection," and extended warranties that the customer never agreed to, using the lame excuse of "Oh we can't do anything about that it it's standard dealership policy to include this stuff on all our new vehicles." Give me a BREAK. They can all go to hell as far as I'm concerned.

I'm pretty sure the Magnus Moss Repair Act would kick in here. Basically, the MMRA states that a warranty can not be voided if the part was being used as intended. Also, they can't void a warranty for you doing your own repair work unless you cause damage. Even then, they can only void the warranty to what you damaged. If you try puting in an aftermarket radio they can't void the warranty on the transmission for instance. Also, these rights CAN'T be signed away, regardless of what any contract states.

I was a 12 volt installer for 30+ years...had an older customer come in with a dash cam rear view mirror that's straps to the original mirror. I don't usually install this Chinesium bs but she was nice and I explained the longevity issues with these units. Easy install in a newer caddy. This caddy even had a lower cigarette type outlet in the lower console that was accessory switched. Fast forward 6 months and she has been plagued with transmission troubles. The dealer blamed the installation and the mirror. After an intense conversation with the servi manager, and me finally laughing at his complex explanation of how this plug in device would be responsible for transmission. I asked him what exactly should those accessory outlets be used for? I think it finally clicked that certainly gm would sufficiently isolate that circuit for noise or what ever that would corupt the transmission issue. Dealers pass the buck because service is just a 7 letter word. Many other dealer stories from my carreer as an owner/installer.

Anytime a dealership (or other shop) starts stating BS the customer should require them to write or sign a statement that you create based on their babble. This would have them admitting that they can not fix a two wire circuit. It would also have the warranty canceled for hooking up a non factory device to a generic outlet (I wonder if the warranty in my house is canceled for connecting a TV to it). I would also have them state what factory devices are available to plug in. The stealerships are hurting. I recently brought my car in for state inspection and they tried forcing me to buy 4 new tires in order to pass the inspection even though the tires were just over a year old with between 8/32- 9/32 of tread left. I declined and they passed me so goes to show a lot of places are trying to scam people into replacing what doesn't need to be replaced.

Hi Ivan I'm a senior mechanic in a Acura dealer with thirty years of experience. I can tell you exactly how the issue happened with your subaru. The dealer gave the car to a apprentice mechanic with no experience and who does not know the basic of using a 12volt test light. As an older Tec I see this a lot. Its very difficult to find quality young people coming into the mechanic field today. Ivan your content is Amazing Also your friend Eric O from south street main is amazing as well you two both put out some of the very best content. The way you both fix cars is using basic logic and common sense backed up with good data (ALDATA) and great scan tools. I try to use the same logic in the dealer every day. Thank you!!!!!!

As a ham radio operator myself, I know that plugging my radio into the cigarette lighter outlet is not a good idea. When installing a radio (permanently), I always run both power leads directly to the battery with fuses in BOTH positive and negative leads.

Why should it not be a good idea? The outlet is rated for the appliance plugged into it - no problem!

@@garyhardman8369 A typical mobile 2 meter radio will pull 12 to 17 amps. The outlet was limited to 10 amps. I think some hams confuse the radio frequency power output with the power consumption of the radio. An 80 watt radio (RF power output) may consume 235 watts of electrical input power. Most mobile radios will have an RF power output of 40-60 watts with some as high as 100 watts. The cigarette lighter outlet is not designed for those sustained power levels. Also, wiring directly to the battery reduces the possibility of "alternator whine" in the transmitted signal.
@Garth2011
@Garth2011 2 жыл бұрын
@@j.t.johnston3048 Yep...even it all it was using were 10 amps but continuously 10 amps in my opinion would be pushing it. Those power plug or cigar lighters are typically designed for intermittent power draws or small continuous draws such as cell phones, razors etc.
@rik999
@rik999 2 жыл бұрын
Even more important is for transmitters to have a good ground (plane). Cigarette lighter outlets do not provide a solid ground with the sliding contact of the adapter. You need to wire a separate connection directly from the car body/frame for your mobile rig. Those 40-100 watts of rf power and crappy grounds will eventually fry important modules in your car.

This is the second recent dealer screw up. Eric O over at South Main Auto had a 2019 Chevy truck that the incompetent dealership charged the customer a kings ransom to diagnose his truck's problem. They told him multiple modules needed replacing for big bucks. Eric correctly diagnosed it as a simple ground strap that had deteriorated for a very nominal cost. Unless you have warranty work to be performed I wouldn't take my vehicle anywhere close to a dealership or more correctly stated , a stealership.

Being such a new car, I would be in the service department managers office asking for a new plastic console panel and the labor to install it which will also require a mechanic that knows how to plug in a two prong connecter to the power port. They got him for the first fee but they will have to eat the second round plus the damaged part. As a Subaru dealer tech for almost 2 decades I can say there a good techs, bad techs, and inexperienced techs at every shop independent or dealer. A rookie tech was properly given this car and didn't want to or know how to access the info to see how the socket is removed and took some bad short cuts to move on to more lucrative work. If the shop culture allows this to happen, that's how repairs like this occur. We have worked very hard in our dealership to make sure the techs know that fixing it right the first time is paramount whether or not the job pays 10 hours or 1/2 hour. More importantly they have the support from more experienced techs to learn how to do the job correctly. Not every dealer tech is bad and not every dealership is a stealer-ship.

The culture needs to make sure and pay the tech for the time worked not for what the book says. So cut corners to beat the book just beats your own wallet. And jobs that go wrong can get done right because they aren't working extra hours for free. I know techs like working 8 and getting paid for 12 but often that means they are cutting corners and doing 1/2 assed work.

I **love** the fact that you test the tester before testing the circuit, every single time. Minor invalid assumption at 4:22, "are we missing the power OR the ground to this outlet" - probably one or the other, but you could also be missing BOTH, i.e. the stealership installed the new outlet but didn't connect it at all. Always check both. (Which you did. OMG. Did I just diagnose it before you tested it? 😅)

Things have gone downhill. I used a 300 watt inverter to keep my aquarium fish alive while driving from San Francisco to Portland Oregon in a Chevy. It ran the pump and heater for about 3 driving days. Then when hauling our travel trailer with our F150, the low beam headlights went out. So I go to radio shack and get a lighter plug and regular extension cord for AC power and hooked the headlight low beams to the lighter socket. This worked for 2 weeks until we got home. Call Subaru Of America and register a complaint, the dealer owes you a refund and possibly a new console panel for scratching it up. I have a Subaru WRX and when it had 5K miles I brought it in because I thought the clutch was acting funny. I had a Bluetooth diagnostic connector in the ODB2 port. The service manager was like: "You have an aftermarket device plugged in." And I'm like "So, what does that have to do with the complaint about the clutch?" He gave me a blank stare.
