Grad school is full of highs and lows - here's what happens to me during one of the lows.
My name is Anne 😊 I'm a FINAL year PhD student at UBC. I do research in the field of drug delivery and nanomedicine. It's natural and hurts but you grow . Keep writing 🥰 This is coming from a person who cried after every small thing I wrote and my supervisor sent comments because I took it as a personal attack and I did not want to write. You are great and so big inspiration 🤗

Thanks for your kind words, Freya ❤️ omg haha ya I logically know that supervisor comments are only meant to help but it's genuinely so difficult to keep it separated from my self-esteem. We'll get better at it 😊

Anne, I’m so sorry that your paper got rejected 😔 it’s completely normal to feel the way you did after receiving the email and I would have felt the exact same! I am also terrible at handling criticism btw so if you figure out any tips on not getting strung up whenever you are critiqued please let me know 😅 good luck with the experiments!!

Sending you hugs, but I'm also so proud of you for sharing this! Trying to publish freaking sucks but one thing I've been told is that success is boring without any prior failures. And even in failures we learn a lot. I consciously tell myself to dissociate my work from my person - I view any critiques I got (esp when I was trying to respond to that reviewer 2 from my review) as purely an addition to the project I'm working on, and I am just a facilitator of seeing the project to fruition. This helped a lot because I was also one of those that took everything single thing to heart. Either way, this is just a lil bump, and you got this!

Thank you very much for sharing this, Anne. I am so sorry that things didn't work out as expected at first, and I can see that every and each one of us deals with these things in our own way. I am glad that you feel better and certain that your paper will find a home. Sharing our struggles and hardships takes courage only a few have. There are many ways to make other people better scientists, and doing what you're doing is certainly an invaluable one. The reviewers have only seen a *picture* of your science, but your science is much more than that. And so are you.

I guess this was in October if it was Canadian thanksgiving? (Fellow Canadian here - in the UK!) sorry about the rejection - journals are notoriously difficult to submit to! Did you end up resubmitting? I like your vlogs - so interesting to see what phd life is like for folks outside my area 🙂

@@anniochan hehe it happens - i am learning that the best laid vlogging plans can quickly go awry with phd research 😅. i'm a social sciences/humanities interdisciplinary researcher, in the department of digital humanities, and the field of critical internet studies. i'm researching Black women's digital lives :)
