Super Saiyan would u really want to see that in this abomination where like shit his pants and begged L for his life. Let's be honest if this had nothing to do with death note ud have a quick written b grade movie that would make the twist ok but they called it death note and destroyed the directors chance of ever working in hollywood again lol

Jacob Reed Because this is an American version,I'm actually expecting to see the scene where a mafia member guns down Light's father or at least the scene where a criminal,under the command of the death note,hijacks a bus.

I definitely didnt think they were going to have the potato chip scene, but if they focused on Light eating a chip right be he wrote in the Death Note that would have been fine. It would have been a geat easter egg for us fans. They had a bunch of unnecessary goofy moments in the film so they could have given us that. Just shows you the producers or writers weren't fans. Just after a check. Smh...

Ace Diamonds it wasn't loyal at all it was piece of garbage that was so far different from the other anime that I'm surprised that the guy who created death no didn't sue I've heard of plenty of other people suing over too much adaptations mean Stephen King sued someone for changing too much and a novel this is just bullshit they just completely changed way too much stuff it makes no sense

Original Death Note is about the colision of two justice concepts of two genius characters. This movie was about two stupid kids killing for fun and trying not to get caught, while some detective kid throws tantrums.

Damian Betancourt You got to understand, this isnt the anime. Its an amaricanized version who got the rights to the story. They were able to do whatever they wanted with it. So character are different then the anime. L at the beginning was trying to figure out who Light was, but then, Light took away Watari, who L cared deeply about. So, naturally, L goes slowly insane, plus, Watari's line "Sleep is key" L hasnt been getting sleep. Making his decisions more quick and not thinking
@TheSamuraiApocalypse

Lightningbolt Studios I don't think there was any good character development throughout the whole movie. They just appear on screen and they don't establish anything interesting about their character which makes it in impossible to relate to them and understand their motives. I think we should've met L at the beginning of the movie. The movie should've been longer in my opinion. My biggest gripe is there wasn't enough setting up of each character.

Anime: L a calm guy, hides emotions, does his job and plans things. Movie: L screams 24/7, doesn't hide emotions, barely does his job properly, drives around like hes in GTA and barely plans anything. Anime: Light a teenager who is not really worried about love, a boy who gets drunk in power and wishes to become the new god, a teen who wanted to change the world for the better his won way and tries to use people along the way for his own benefit. Movie: Light a boy who gets bullied for no reason because thats what most american movies like to add into their school movies, worries about love all day but towards the end not so much, towards the end wants to run away and never use the note again and gets used by people and never comes up with genius ideas except the ending which was cheap as well wasn't that smart. Anime: Death Note has it's ORIGINAL rules Movie: Death note has its own rules :))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Subaru Uchimaki alright, I'll agree. willem Dafoe, not a bad choice to play ryuk. I could imagine him getting all of ryuk's quirks, like his insatiable appetite for apples, despite the fact that he's a shinigami, therefore he wouldn't need them. but, it's not like there aren't better Death Note movies out there. I mean, hell, there are 3. 2 in Japanese, both of which have the option to replace the Japanese dialogue with the anime dubs English voice actors dubbing the Japanese guys mouths, and the reLight: visions of a god animated movie. so, why does this exist? for the money? for relevance? if you couldn't tell, I'm a huge Death Note fan. so, while I don't mind Willem Dafoe playing Ryuk, I wonder, who would you have picked to play him, given the chance? also, who would be your pick to play the rest of the cast, like L, Light, Misa, Soichiro ( Light's father), Near ( one of L's successors), maybe Watari, or Mello ( another of L's successors who turns to crime in order to try to beat Near, but ultimately fails), and maybe the 2nd Watari ( because the first one dies), and possibly, that one detective who was a Kira fanboy, can't remember his name at the moment, but he was the one who shot light at the end. thanks, if you read this, and remember: 'the human who's name is written down in this note shall die'. that is all. good day.

Shawn Fields Honestly, I think Willem was perfect, nothing wrong there, Nat as Light wasn't a good choice, since he dosen't have the 'smart' looks, someone like Thomas Sangster, L could have been played by that actor who playsbthe main chracter in Atypical, he could pull off the quirks, Mia could be played by Elle Fanning, maybe, and Soichiro, maybe Woody Harrelson, I guess, honestly I'm horribpe at casting choices, lol

I feel that the film makers and whoever were the people writing the script never watched the anime or read the Manga. They clearly do NOT understand the motivations behind the characters and what made the series and Manga so great. They should have just watched the damn series together, discussed what its meaning and feeling was, and then written a separate story of what would have happened if the death note ended up elsewhere with different characters, or a sequel or prequel. But what they did, it's just a shitty miss-interpretation of a piece of art by someone with no taste or talent, in my opinion.

A or A- I mean. The story is really good, but there's always room for improvement. Pretty sure when action happens, which isn't so often so the cost would not be too high, and else, it could have more interesting brutal animation, perhaps in contrast to light not seeing skulls crushing etc, just cutting back to him seeing the news of the deaths . It's cool but. A+nah.

One thing I didn't care for as much were the deaths themselves. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about Violent films. That being said, the heart attacks from the anime were more ominous and built up the "God is watching" mentality Light was trying to create. In this film he just kind of sets up final destination scenes. On the Plus side, I loved the line where Ryuk tells Light "There are four letters in my name. The most anyone's ever gotten was two." EDIT: I know Ryuk's name is written in the death note and the death note only kills humans. I just liked they way he put light in his place.

So funny thing, after watching the trailer for this movie I actually started watching clips from the anime, which led me to watch the whole series before the Netflix movie was released. And Death Note (the anime) was surprisingly thrilling, and the intellectual cat and mouse game between Light and L was like watching Sherlock Holmes vs Moriarty, but more intense. I'm not a big anime watcher, but Death Note really sucked me in and I enjoyed it. I think the biggest disappointment with the Netflix movie was more that it devolved into your standard teen horror flick with gorey deaths, sex, and whatnot. Also the first time Light kills in the movie is way different, and kind of petty, like, yeah kill the school bully. In the anime it was always about killing criminals and people that the justice system let off easy. And sending a message to criminals that committing a crime will earn you a death sentence. I get that they couldn't adapt the whole anime, that would require a whole series, or a miniseries at least. But taken at face value, without even thinking about the anime, it turns out as a just okay teen horror flick with poor character development. The only sad part is that it barely resembles the source material, and throws out the intellect in favor of lowest common denominator horror tropes.

Shawn Fields Honestly I would've forgiven what they did to L if they hadn't royally fucked up on everything else. They turned Light into some Dexter type serial killer trying to help people get revenge when in reality he wanted to become a god and rule. And instead of being a genius who rivals L, he's just your average smart kid that helps people cheat but randomly is able to put together people helping him at the very end so he doesn't die or get caught. And the fact that he spilled about the death note right after he spoke with Mia because... vagina... They destroyed every good cat and mouse game between L and Light and all of a sudden L was just omnipotent and knew everything because... reasons and timing. They crammed so much shit in there they couldn't show How L came to his conclusions.

I really don't think people are grasping why the fans of the original anime are pissed about this film. No one cares that it isn't a direct replica of the anime, what is a problem is that they are taking already established characters and are horrendously interpreting them...the best course this movie could have made was to just come up with original characters and an original plot. Not just ride the coat tails of an already successful franchise and story and make a very shitty interpretation of it. Which is what this movie was, it was not an adaptation but a very bad interpretation of what the director thought the anime was.

Jamel Jordan Exactly. You can change bits and pieces there, like for example Marvel Civil war. It's not exactly like it was in the comics, but you watching it you can tell that you're watching Civil war. With Death Note the plot isn't there and the characters act nothing like the characters, they're all dumb 😡. The same thing happened to Dragon Ball years ago with that god awful DB Evolution. I didn’t think they focus in on Light’s evilness at all. In the anime, he became more and more “evil” due to his god complex, but in this movie, he was more of a “misunderstood” boy who still had morals. Mia was more of the central manipulator who wanted the killing to continue no matter what. Light and her got in a fight because he didn’t want to kill innocent people who were trying to figure out his identity. In the anime, light was the one killing innocent people so his identity wont get found out. This movie was very Americanize in making the lead protagonist more likable in the moral sense than the more interesting manga and anime where Light was a character that you like because of how off the rails he was.

Death Note spoilers: The worst thing about killing L off in the manga/anime is that they just replaced him with an inferior version of him. Killing L was a huge moment, but it was pointless when his replacement pretty much acts the same and does the same things as he did. They may as well have kept L alive because it ultimately didn't change the story.
@ETBrooD
@ETBrooD 6 жыл бұрын
It's hard to introduce a new antagonist in place of L, he was the perfect nemesis to Light. If his successor is smarter or more resourceful (and Near was both) then that takes away from L. That's one of the reasons why a lot of people don't like Near (the main reason probably being that he simply wasn't L. But another reason was that Near badmouthed L). The fact that Near even had similar mannerisms made things even worse. What could've worked is a drug ring declaring war on Light because he's meddling with their affairs. But it would be a little difficult to introduce a new likable character like L. Making a drug lord likable? Huh. Interesting idea actually.

The problem with American adaption of anime is that they stray far away from the source material at a point where it's unrecognizable. Or they just recopy it without knowing why it's so great in the first place. And the problem with Japanese adaption of anime is that they are way too close to the source material that the actors look like cosplayers. Some things don't work on the big screen. I think the filmmakers should find a balance between them. Not too close to the source material where it looks fucking ridiculous and not too far where it looks like a completely different thing.

TheNikkiHolmes yup. I had people who never heard of the anime watch the Japanese live action film and they all loved it. It's alright, you could tell they ran out of cool strategies and just really liked the idea of Light winning and becoming L, but playing the the foreshadowing that L said as long as you're handcuffed to me, we both die. The ending was good, N used M to piece together what L could not. It was satisfying to see Light crack and have all the strings tied up, it's just that what it took to get there was more about action than strategy. N called out Light from the beginning so the tension was only in seeing how it ended and it took a long time. What people actually dislike seems to be the Japanese live action movie, but I liked their alternate ending. Having L write his own name in the book so Rem couldn't kill him, faking his death and using his last few days to watch over Light and put him in check mate. It could have been done better but writing your own name so that you can't be killed earlier is an interesting rule bend that the the source material never used.

If you don't know any of the original characters (and how much worse their movie copies are) it's not really a BAD movie. It's just kinda..a clichéd teen movie with lots of exploding heads and 2 or 3 weird pacing choices (skip past the interesting part that MADE the protagonist Kira because no time, but then leave in like 10 minutes of an extended absolutely pointless chase scene that added literally NOTHING to the story..?

I love death note as an anime and I didnt have high hopes for this movie, but think this movie is an alternate story to death note. The montage that light has is rushed, but its an hour and 40 minute movie. I also thought L was a good character. Its like when near the end of death note when light goes insane, but now L is going insane and will stop at nothing to kill light. I was never board, ryuk was a good character, and I thought the ending was great. I would give this movie a 7/10. PS: stop bitching about it not being like the anime

They made a huge ass plot hole in the movie by changing the heart attack rule. Without the default heart attack killing method, there is no real way of deducing that a person or some other entity is doing this. Criminals were just dying in random ways. That kind of stuff happens everyday. So there's no real justifiable pattern or basis that can support that claim or even give anyone a reason to be all that suspicious. In fact, Light probably could have gotten away with everything without anyone knowing that someone was killing the criminals if Light had made an effort to do it discretely. The whole reason the world even finds out about and acknowledges Kira is because young and healthy criminals whose information had been leaked to the public were all dying of heart attacks at fairly scheduled times and then group of FBI agents investigating Kira all died of heart attacks as well. And Light did this intentionally because he wanted people to know someone was doing this. He wanted to become the God of the new world. However, none of that is relevant when no one is dying of heart attacks and there's just not really a way of people figuring this out unless it's just for the sake of the plot.

Wanting to like it (I like liking things). But boy did I choose a wrong one. I even gave up on editing my footage, cleaning up what I had, etc. I just recorded a new ending review, all quick and dirty, stitched it together and am in the middle of posting it. The fact that they changed the characters changed the entire dynamic and therefore all the themes and nuances of the original story. Surely they tried to surprise fans by something different but this was not how to do that. Edit: it also didn't help that they skipped over the investigative part and focused on the YA romance. Wrong story to do that.

I disagree about Ryuk. Ryuk is a chaotic neutral in the source material. He’s much more unnecessarily antagonistic and aggressive in the movie. They made him some edge lord that enjoys seeing people die from the Death Note. In the source material, Ryuk is just bored in the desolate Shinigami realm. He drops the notebook to hang out in the human realm (he can only stay there to possess a human with the notebook) and plays video games and watches chaos unfold because it’s more interesting than staying in the Shinigami realm. Ryuk isn’t some malicious entity out to get people killed. The Shinigami in the source material just couldn’t care enough about human life to find killing them interesting. Longer response than I expected to write but yeah

Alison Sakura ok. you're welcome, ma'am. no need to thank me though, I just enjoy being polite to people. but why was a foot rub a moment of symbolism? sounds more like a weird moment. that I don't remember for some reason. even though i have the Death Note Enclyopedia, I don't recall a moment like that in the series. maybe the anime writers have a foot fetish, ugh I hope not.

Alison Sakura but why, was it important that L give Light a foot rub?! it just sounds like weird yaoi fanfiction to me, no offense if anybody here is into that, I'm just saying, that should never be implied in a mainstream anime like that, giving those fangirls out there, some kind of false hope. but thanks, in return for your own politeness.
@shawnfields266
@shawnfields266 6 жыл бұрын
Alison Sakura oh, don't get me wrong, Ms.Sakura, I didn't think nothing would make sense after that, I was just saying, why did L choose to massage another dudes foot? it was just weird to see, right before he died, you know? like, why would you want to see that right before you die? was L trying to maybe coerce Light into not killing him by promising to give him all the foot rubs he wanted? also, I'm glad my comparison to fanfiction made you laugh, as that's what I was going for. what kind of bible scene involves foot rubs? I don't know, I didn't think L was going to die when I saw that scene, I thought that L and Light were going to, you know, get it on. the music didn't help, it seemed like something operatic was going to happen. but, I was hoping L would catch Kira, like he promised he would. L was my favorite character, and seeing him take down Kira, like he was justice, would've been so satisfying, you know? but maybe, a bit too predictiable. but, I'm glad I was able to have this discussion with you, it's nice to just talk to somebody, online and have a nice, normal discussion about Death Note. thanks again, and I hope we can talk again later. have a nice day or night wherever you are, and remember to stay beautiful.

I don't like how they got rid of some important rules. Like touching the Death Note to see Ryuk was monumental to Near capturing Light. It also seems that rule that only humans can be killed was scrapped because it is implied that people have tried to kill Ryuk. I also really hated how Mia and Light were portrayed as some weird gothic teens. I guess it was supposed to make them more relatable? Ryuk and L were easily the best parts of the film though.

And then it becomes a Bonnie and Clyde story, where the element of "whoever touches the death note can see the Shinigami" is taken out. Instantly robbing the movie of one of the series most interesting dynamics. Making changes is fine, completely retconning the character to the point of being unrecognisable is not. There is nothing about him that is remotely like Light in the books. Also, we didn't need fucking gory moneyshots whenever somebody dies. That isn't what we're into Death Note for.

They completely missed the point of the anime. The philosophical side of the anime focused on the true form of justice. Both the protagonists (rivals L and Light) represented the their ideology of justice and defended it. That's what drew me to it and the characters were fantastic. They only cared about justice although later L grew affection for Light and kinda lost there. Movie could have been a lot better if they rather focused on changing the plot because anime had very subtle scenes which made it a master piece. it's hard to do that with a movie.

I haven't seen the anime, the best thing about the film is, that I now really want to see the anime. I loved the idea, but the second half of the film was bullshit.

jekyll hirsi if you think the second half was bullshit then you will most likely like the anime just know that some characters are completely different from the movie counterparts

What's so weird is I thought the first half was OK, but as soon as L showed up (my favorite part of the movie) I was in. The 2nd half really made it for me. not great, but good.

not sure if you check these older posts. i just watched your review of the American live-action version of "Death Note." I was wondering if you have seen the two/three part Japanese version directed by Shusuke Kaneko that was done in 2006? {for Viz pictures / distributed by Shonen Jump} i say two/three part because they do Death Note as two volumes, then a spin-off epilogue about L called "L: change the world - the last 23 days of L." i have seen little of the anime, but prefer this version to the American attempt. i did a search of your older reviews but did not see this one. as you say, you are a huge fan of the anime/manga, was curious about your thoughts on the Japanese version.

It’s like the creator of the movie only saw a couple of clips of the anime and decided to make a movie
