discussing the history of the popular idea that fairies are or were a folk memory of neolithic or bronze age humans pushed out by iron age invaders.

The idea that such ancient interactions could survive in folk memory is compelling to modern folks. It's something I wondered about for a long time. Thank you for posting this, your video clarifies a lot. So the ideals of manifest destiny/ colonialism that permeated the culture of those scholars was an overwhelming influence on how they interpreted folklore. Very sobering. BTW thank you for your Dagda book. Not only a scholarly overview but also a work of devotion. He deserves it.

I've been wondering about this and also the iron thing. I've been doubting the iron idea for some time and I wouldn't think that beings affiliated with the Morrigan would be iron averse. Not to mention the earth is rich in iron, our blood is rich in iron, in fact, the solar system is rich in iron, Mars is a case in point and so are the meteors that are mostly made up of iron. Why would anyone be afraid of iron?

I appreciate this video!! I had an anthropology professor in college, whose specialty was “celtic anthropology” and he taught his beginner classes this exact same thing 🤧 he gave the whole speil about small bronze age people and the iron weapons “explanation” 😬

I have been thinking a lot about fae and iron. Are there any book suggestions besides the one you suggest in this video to get more info?

Also, when the Bronze age ended it took down a lot of civilisations all built on the centralised, command economy model, many of which were arguably less "primitive" than the iron age warlords that replaced them. Certainly, more citified and international. They weren't displaced by superior iron so much as by the collapse of the international trade routes required by bronze.

@Éamonn Kearns Yes it's called Google and Wikipedia and learning about a little thing called the Bronze Age Collapse. There are also videos about it here on KZfaq!

Fairies are described as being as small as ants and as large as giants. They can appear as a human with animalistic features, as cats, dogs, horses, birds. Their logic and ways of doing things are very different from humans. How could one group of humans be translated into such a large group of beings with so many non human characteristics and why would people have any reason to propagate that idea? These were my thoughts upon first hearing this theory.

Incredible video! Thank you so much! Would be super curious about a Celtic of the West video. I understand it’s controversial and not rly supported theory but ooof it’s all very over my head.

I very much agree with all of this. I lean toward fairies being something like an interdimentional being who can perhaps choose what spectrum to appear (or disappear) in or something. This would also allow them to just easily remove themselves from peoples they didn't wish to interact with.

This reminds me to take notes regarding faeries in California and the gold rush. I try to not center what I’ve learned but I suppose it’s relative since the mystery persists! Oh to have the experience again, thoyg it was terrifying 😂 🤷🏽♀️

I love your material, I love that you give facts about history and academia. The only link to a Bronze Age people is that many of the archeological sites associated with the fairy are Bronze Age our earlier (from what I’ve seen). I wonder if there is a reason for that, as I don’t believe they are a “memory” either 😉

I really hate this entire idea. The iron thing is (probably) comparatively recent.

Also also, the idea of marginalised people with secret primitive magical powers and nature wisdom (to teach to whitey) has its own fun and racist history.

I don’t think you can debunk much of anything having to do with fairies. They are the definition of unfalsifiable. Can’t prove they exist can’t prove they don’t exist. Same with any claim about where they came from or what they do.
@MorganDaimlerfairies2 жыл бұрын
This theory can be debunked though. No physical evidence of humans pushed into those fringes. No historic record of it. No record of mass migrations at all. Clear evidence that isn't how iron technology happened. And it's easy to trace this theory appearing in the Victorian era and then being disproven and criticized by later scholars.
