The Disney logo always looked look Gisney to me. I pronounced it as gisney, which sounds alot like jizz knee, which also confused me as a kid. I was more confused because i wasn't lysdexic so I thought all signatures had to begin with a backwards letter.

There's a plaza by my childhood home where the only business left standing is a Chuck E. Cheese's. Like, sure, it outlasted a Blockbuster, who didn't, but it also outlasted a major regional grocery store, a Little Cesar's, a popular local Chinese food restaurant, a Pub 99, a nail salon, and a CVS. When the world ends, Charles will still stand tall.

Fun Fact: Chuck E. Cheese's (the character's) official backstory is that he was an orphan, so no one ever celebrated his birthday, and this upset him so much that when he grew up, he made a fun restaurant-arcade for kids to go for their birthdays so no one had to experience party-less childhoods like he did.

Really? I never knew that! In recent news, a girl who worked there threw a young boy a birthday party when no one showed up. She couldn't handle his reaction so all the employees of that location got together and made it special for him. Goes right with the backstory (if that is true)....making her kind act even better.

When I was six I legitimately got lost in a McDonalds play place crawl tunnel. I crawled through those colourful, sweat smelling tunnels for what felt like ages (but was probably only a couple of minutes). I could hear other people but I only saw one other kid peaking out from behind a corner only to skitter back when she saw me. I’m not saying I temporarily clipped into a child version of the backrooms, but I think we can all agree that if there existed such a place, one entrance would definitely be inside a McDonalds

I think that was me, were you wearing glasses and a purple striped shirt? What year did this happen to you? LMAO just curious because I distinctly remember "playing hide and seek" with my older sister in one of the play places. After being "the best hider" for like maybe twenty or thirty minutes I gave up and eventually went down the slide. I remember being really mad and asking my sister what happened, she said,"I forgot to go in there!" Also I was extremely shy/ possibly antisocial as a kid... If you were the kid in purple you did look hella lost/confused. If it wasn't you, "I'm sorry kid in a purple striped shirt." 😊😅😂

I can only assume that the Peter Pan room was actually one of those shadow rooms I've seen at a couple fun houses, where there's a dim room with one or more walls covered in some sort of photosensitive material and a strobe light that flashes once every few minuets. When the flash happens, the photosensitive walls will retain any shadow that got cast on them until the next flash occurs.

9:51 my favorite part of every Defunctland episode i've seen so far is when Kevin says something like "...they could dominate the new market." and the unsaid, 'but you're listening to it on a channel called /Defunct/land, so you know where this is about to go.' gives me such a grin (usually. Sometimes it makes me sad).

DisneyQuest was my first job after highschool. It was such a rad experience and Pleasure Island was such a fucking awesome thing for me through my early 20's. It broke my heart to see them kill off Pleasure Island and eventually DisneyQuest. I legitimately teared up when you mentioned it. They threatened closing it when I worked there in 2005 and it seemed like they had been threatening for years. It made me so happy to see that stubborn bastard hold on for another 12 years before being closed. I still have a Cyberspace Mountain card with 13 loops on it named the Jolly Trolley.

I was watching this video when my mom came in and started watching it with me. She told me I had a Pooh themed party at Club Disney when I was really little and that it was the worst thing ever. Club Disney had messed up big time from printing the wrong location (TO instead of Covina), to giving my presents away to a different family, and never giving me my cake or Mickey pizza. I don't remember any of this (I was 3-4) but apparently I was devastated since I only had 3 people (all of whom were my cousins) show up to my freaking party due to the printing error sending people to the wrong location. My mom ended up buying each of us one toy from the store to make up for it. She was quite livid after the whole ordeal. She made Club Disney track my presents down to return to me and demanded a refund for all the money she had spent for the party. They found & returned my presents and she got every dime she spent on this disaster of a party refunded to her. They apparently never apologized for any of this. All in all I learned something new from my mom and Defunctland!

When you lay it out the way you did, Disney IPs, theming, and attention to detail, it's absolutely dumbfounding that it *didn't* become a hit. I remember being a kid and having Chuck E. Cheese down the road from us when I lived in the Atlanta suburbs, and I thought even then that it was trying to be Disney and have the Country Bears Jamboree vibe. At that time it was mostly an arcade, with video games and ski ball and other fair-type games where you could win tickets to get a prize. By the time it became an indoor playplace, I was a teenager and bummed that I was considered too old/tall to get in there and do the FUN stuff, and I remember wishing that had been around when I was a smaller. So, was it mostly that they scared too many people away with the idea that there were going to be tons of people and it would be a madhouse? Or is it just that Eisner micromanaged too much and really did NOT have that Disney eye for detail, or that he wanted to do it all on the cheap?

Disney really is a such a morally grey company. While employing very talented artists, engineers, and people who I think do genuinely care about kids, they are also a giant capitalistic leviathan who now have become the Standard Oil of entertainment. Issues such as low employee pay at their resorts still persist to this day. As someone who was born in Orlando Disney stories always hit close to home for me as what Disney produces truly highlights our society's surreal contradictions.

+Stevie 1. Neither Disney or Bob Iger weren't going to do anything about their workers' low salaries until they were publicly shamed by Bernie Sanders. And 2. it really says everything about our society when people will run and take up for a large impersonal corporation over actual flesh and blood workers. The brainwashing is truly fascinating and scary at the same time. Sure Disney stories are good and they hire very talented and well meaning creatives, but at the end of the day Disney the company only cares about its shareholders and nothing else. They do *not* care about you or your family. Us Americans really do need to step out of our right-wing economic Stockholm Syndrome and learn that large corporations do not need to be defended. Our social and economic systems are broken and Disney's issues are just symptoms of these larger problems.
@justinreid2947

+Moby Green This consumerist "personal choice" narrative is just flat-out corrosive and the cause of pretty much all of our country's problems. A choice of products is the furthest thing from choosing your own destiny, and fooling people into thinking that buying and selling things is the purest form of freedom has made them way easier to control by those in power. This is the true face of neoliberalism, which really is a form of social darwinism in a clever disguise, and it seeks to turn every aspect of life into a commodity that is to be bought and sold. This comment from a socially right-wing perspective, but this has also taken over too much of the so-called "left" as well. I hope this disgusting greedy ideology crashes like the authoritarian Communist societies because ideas like these are truly Communism's evil reverse image. People are sick and tired of "business" having lordship over their lives and people on the right and center need to understand that.

@@milesgaunt6767 I drive for UberEats and you'd be surprised by all of the ghost kitchens. Sometimes I'll pick up from a "restaurant" that is just a warehouse that a group of college age kids bought where they sell store bought frozen food under the guise of being various locally owned restaurants on delivery apps. Ra Sushi is usually Benihana, though there are a few actual Ra Sushi locations. MrBeast Burger is always for some reason Italian restaurants when I pick up. A lot of fairly high end restaurants in my area have ghost kitchens that offer the same exact menu at a lower price. This is so they can profit off of the major increase in third party delivery app usage, without tarnishing the reputation of the restaurant as a high end experience. Some restaurants have themselves listed as two completely different restaurants on delivery apps with the same exact menu, just because having 2 out of 8 chicken wing restaurants in an area makes people more likely to pick one of your listed restaurants to buy wings from.

I spent so much time at Club Disney as a kid that I still have dreams about it as an adult, but no one ever knew what I was talking about to the point where I questioned its existence. This seriously just unlocked some childhood memories!

Oh boy, I remember field trips to ESPN Zone Baltimore. It was through the somewhat separate aftercare program, and they happened on days in which there was no school but weren’t holidays like professional development days and whatnot.

9/10 point deducted because the 90's intro should have had a shot of Eisner tripping in his office and throwing a bunch of papers into the air before falling to the floor off camera, leaving only his secretary in-frame, looking on with a knowing amused smirk on her face, arms akimbo, gentely shaking her head side to side as if to say "Yup, that's my boss!"

I worked at Chuck E Cheese about 7 years ago when I was 16. When you were talking about the Play Place I was reminded about this time when a kid wouldn't come out of the little overlook area. His mom didn't feel comfortable climbing up there so the manager went up to try to get him out. When she gets up there we see her hands slip and her fall on her face. Turns out the kid had taken his full diaper off and wiped his feces all over the tube and she had fallen face first into it. The other manager demanded that either my coworker or I go up and clean it. The three of us walked out and never went back.

I feel bad for everyone in that situation. People just trying to run a children's entertainment place, and parents just wanting their kids to blow off some steam, but some innocent 3 year old had to smear his crap everywhere and ruin it.

Fun fact, a similar experience as a child (Albeit with urine in a playplace instead of feces) inspired an online pal of mine to write an SCP entry. A pretty darn good one too: www.scp-wiki.net/scp-1904 It's also canon to his Burgrr Entries story; and by extension his webcomic Awful Hospital, if you're familiar with either of those...

In my area is a building that had been commissioned by Disney, but the Club Disney concept folded before it could open as one. It was subsequently taken on by an independent children's venue called Makutu's Island, which remains open to this day.
