Apparently when I was a toddler, I would create a huge mess with my toys and then proclaim, standing on the couch, “WHO MADE THIS BIG MESS? Well...I made it...so I’ve gotta clean it up.” I’d then clean up the mess I just made. Then make another one and repeat the process. My mother thought it was such strange behavior until she noticed I was imitating this show.

I think what really sells this show is that the clowns aren't just actors in greasepaint but honest-to-goodness circus performers who can juggle, do acrobatics and perform just the right kind of broad, exaggerated acting. In fact, this is the last piece of mainstream media I can think of where clowns are just... clowns and not ironic or creepy perversions of clowns (which, ngl, I understand why but it kinda bums me out).

@poppythedogofwonders
@poppythedogofwonders 11 ай бұрын
Well, the clowns don't really look too much like clowns, people think the fear of them comes from the excessive face paint causing your brain to become iffy cause it's having a hard time registering the face under all that paint, which is why you get creeped. I think, that's just what I've heard. In any case, the clowns in the show don't really have much makeup which helps.

@@poppythedogofwonders When I was in probably 1st grade, my parents dressed me as a clown for Halloween. I saw myself in the mirror, screamed, went and hid under my bed and cried. Even just last Halloween I went on a hayride, saw a clown (it was literally a person wearing a cheap plastic mask), took off running and had a panic attack. I have lots of stories, but I basically have always had an irrational fear of them. And I don't really have a good reason why. So maybe your theory is correct
@ElFreakinCid
@ElFreakinCid 11 ай бұрын
@@poppythedogofwonders One thing I notice is that this show's clowns have a much more traditional, old-timey approach with their costumes and makeup, which is especially evident with Granny. We get some light circus clown elements in there with Major Bedhead, but even then, as you mentioned, he has minimal makeup and his face as a result would look mostly ordinary and approachable to anyone. Even in that gag segment aired during the clown invasion, there's such a stark contrast between how the creepy clowns looked vs Loonette that really illustrates what made this show so helpful in making more kids of my generation okay with clowns. Oddly enough though, I never had any issue with more heavily done-up, over-the-top clowns as a kid either.

I loved the heck out of Sagwa (an American and Canadian co-production), Franklin and Little Bear (which both aired on Nick Jr), and Timothy Goes To School (despite being short-lived) which aired on PBS Kids in the early 2000s for their "Bookworm Bunch" block before briefly returning to television on the TLC and Discovery Kids weekday morning block "Ready Set Learn" in 2006. Between the 90s and early 2000s, Nelvana alongside the Ocean Group (Loved the English Dub of Hamtaro as a kid) was the king at making animated children's content from Canada.

I spent my early childhood in a Russian-Canadian home, and she had a couch that looked EXACTLY like Lunette's couch, complete with the stuffing coming out and the doily on top. My Baba, who I lived with, was very much like Granny Garbanzo, telling stories about the "old life" and even adding the "(sh)ka" at the end of our names. In Russian, adding that suffix is a way to endear someone, like a very close friend or a child. I think it's kind of like adding "ita" to someone's name in Spanish, but I don't know Spanish so maybe I'm wrong lol. I was Elenushka (endeared version of Elena). So cool to look back on the show as an adult and realize how and why I connected with it so much

Fun fact: Another of Alyson Court's famous 90's roles was voicing Claire Redfield in Resident Evil 2 and Code: Veronica, and there's a funny story regarding that and the BCC. Alyson was doing one of the live appearances mentioned in this video in New York City back in 1998, at a toy store where she did a meet-and-greet for children. During a break, she decided to get up and have a bit of a walk around and happened upon a booth showcasing the then-newly released Resident Evil 2. As was per-usual (and to a great degree, this is still a thing today), Alyson had never seen the actual game, nor had any context of her character beyond reading her lines. So what grabbed her attention was hearing her own voice coming from the booth, which prompted her to enter and see the game--and her character--in action for the first time. So imagine, if you will, Loonette the Clown walking into a booth showing one of the most violent and gory games on the market at that time with a big awed smile on her face for reasons most people probably couldn't put together. IIRC, she mentioned that she got a _lot_ of confused and surprised stares.

@** and? Trying to relate to something and ACTUALLY relating to something are two very different things. You can't fake true relation lol, you really think I would sit through 26 minutes and 23 seconds of Lunette and her couch if I was really trying to "take over" everyone's 90's nostalgia through my relationship with the show? Definitely not haha! Being that I was born in 2004 shouldn't make a difference. If anything, it's even MORE liberating to connect with others (older or not) through a show many around me don't remember. The fact that you feel the NEED to tell me what I MYSELF watched as a six-year-old is just silly and immature :) The facts are: I like the show. I appreciate that there are others who also have fond memories of it. And I'm happy to have found the video. I don't understand why this is upsetting to you (also, saying "no offense" doesn't magically make what you say non-offensive). I'm personally not offended, but I do believe that there's a time and place for telling others what they should relate to - and telling someone younger than yourself that they shouldn't be able to express their love in a show simply because you spent an extra few years on earth longer than them, is stupid. AND yes...we have our "own stuff" as you mentioned. Us gen z's were the first to grow up among smartphones and more tech than ever. If you TRULY want the decades and generations to "stay in their lanes", then you wouldn't be using a smartphone. But I bet you still are. And that's okay lol. And I bet no 17 year old has ever walked up to you and said "you can't use a phone - that's crushing on our generation!", now have they? I don't think they have lol And guess what? Someone younger than you also likes the same show! :D w0W h0w amAzINg If you can't share "your show" (which it's not) with others, then please find help. Thank you for your time - and consider your time saved. I could write paragraphs among paragraphs (with legitimately good insults) surrounding your stupidity, but I think I'll save my breath. I hope you have a fantastic day my friend, and may you never fully complete the clock stretch :)))) Sorry you feel the need to tell me what I should remember as a child.

When my daughter was two to four years old, this show was her favourite thing in the world. She could be doing anything, but the moment she heard the theme she would stampede to the TV room as fast as she could. She's 19 now, and away at University. I don't know why KZfaq recommended this to me, but thank you.

This is so sweet! Reminded me of when I was a child and my mom would wake me up for school by having the TV up loud so I could hear the theme song to "Adventures in Wonderland" playing. It was my favorite show and it came on at like 6/6:30 am. So many memories of rubbing my sleepy eyes as the theme played and trotting to the TV then sitting on the couch and eating cereal. 😭💖 Wholesome times..
