4.7L Hydraulic Lifter and Valve Cover Gasket Replacement - Tips & Tricks to make it EASY

The 4.7L V8 which Chrysler designed and put into Jeeps and Dodges in the early 2000's is a great motor. Very reliable, long lasting, and a reasonable amount of power and torque. All that said there are a few fatal flaws inherent in the design of this motor. Thankfully, you can do something about it.
In this video I am removing and replacing the valve cover gasket on my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 V8 because it has been leaking oil. With the valve covers are off, I am going to take the time to replace the hydraulic lifters (lash adjusters) which now have 125,000 miles on them. These lifters tend to wear out over time or if the engine has had regular oil service neglected and can cause catastrophic engine failure if they collapse fully.
This process will be the same for all Jeep Grand Cherokees 99-04
It will also be extremely similar for Jeep Grand Cherokees 05-10, Jeep Commanders, Dodge Dakotas, and Dodge Durangos with the 4.7L. The different on these vehicles may be in what has to be moved to get to the valve covers. Removing the rocker arms to access the hydraulic lifters will be the same.
Though this is not a quick or easy repair, I have some great tips and tricks so that any DIY guy in the garage can get this done on their Dodge truck or Jeep.

Just wanted to thank you for this video, as well as your radiator removal video. I just finished the valve cover gaskets, lifters (all of mine had no “spring”), spark plugs, and radiator replacement on my wife’s 04 Grand Cherokee Overland and I don’t think I could have done it without your help. I went really slow, though, it took me five days!

Pull the plugs, or use the serpentine belt on, turning the motor by the alternator nut. Spins the motor plugs in or out. With the fan out it's easier and faster to do this job. The time saved pulling the radiator/fan draining the coolant and pulling the heater hoses will make life easier. Former Mopar tech here, did a lot of these under warranty along with 3.7's as well, you can have the job done in under 2 hours and running again removing key components. no sense leaving it all in there and fighting the job, remove as much as possible and go with the flow! Nice job explaining and demonstrating the process of R&R the lash adjusters, and reasoning behind doing this before they fail.

Thank you for this response. Wish there was a realistic labor time posted. Anyone who hasn't done this job 40 times at a dealer, will certainly take longer than two hours. Just my opinion though. Good advice about removing as much as possible. Usually a good idea to get the clutter out of the way.

A first timer with decent tools and some engine experience, 6-8 hours, realistically. I think it took me that long the first couple times, after that, I knew all the shortcuts and got the time down, so I was getting paid 5.5 hours for ~2~ hours of work, Flat Rate. Harry homeowner could do it in a weekend easy I think, with some decent tools, nothing extravagant or special, though there are special tools available for this engine.

i@@alant7516 Rent or buy a fan clutch removal kit. Other wise, a long skinny punch and a ball peen hammer. Facing the fan from the front end,., put the punch on the left side of the big fan nut. Hit it (the punch with a several pound hammer) counter-clockwise, 1/4 turn and it should come loose, then unscrew it. Shouldn't be tight, 10-15-foot pounds would be a considered almost too tight.

I just spin the motor until the cam is not depressing any of the valves and then I just unbolt the cam so it's loose enough to remove and install the rockers without issues

I put solid adjustable ones in from Airram when I replaced the heads on my 04. Real pain in the ass getting them all just the right size however the very noticeable power increase, especially up top was worth it. No more morning clatter and knowing I won't kick a rocker really made it worth the money and time.

Thank you for this VEDIO There are a lot of graddstanders doing this same work on U tube, but only want to show how great there work is. You learn nothing from them, and there photography is poor. Young man you did a excellent job of narrative and photographs. You also explain and present information well. I appreciate the great explanation of how lifters work and how to tell if they are bad. I have 180k miles on my 06 ram 4.7 and recently blew a head gasket so I pulled the engine and took the heads off to get machined and was told by the Machinist to take off the cams and rocker arms and I wasnt sure about the lifters so I took them out too and most of them have the loose plunger like you were talking about. I didnt know how to test them until viewing this video. Now I know to replace them. Tks!

I went through this only to still have the ticking noise. If you have done this procedure and still have ticking problem then do a pressure test on the cylinder that is ticking, not a compression test which will fail on a bad cylinders anyways but you will be able to hear the pressure moving between cylinders via a bad head gasket blown between cylinders. This is what I found on my 4.7

Great video on a known problem with these engines. I've also seen on of the wheels on the roller followers fail and wipe out a camshaft, while their out it would be worth making sure each of those spin freely. Also on those runner grommets in the valve covers a trim panel popper, the little forked pry bar deal, will grab those and a quick twist rips that grommet right out of there. Keeps the awesome content coming!

*** This is the way! After buying, fumbling around for hours, and breaking the "special tool", I bent a 10mm wrench as shown (90 deg to get in and 30 deg to clear master cylinder.) It worked so much better! Some notes: 1. 1 full turn of the main will turn your cam about 180. You can get to it from the oil filter hole in the skid plate so you don't need to take the front apart. 2. Work a cylinder at a time, get the lobes pointing upish, pop rocker out, reinstall last one first - it'll save you time. 3. It's easier to just take all the stuff on top off. Yes it takes longer to put it all back but you won't cuss near as much. (2000 Dodge Dakota)

Very nice video. Covered every aspect of the job and reminded me I should pull plugs and replace them also to save the loss of blood. My wife has a 2002 JGC Sunday evening she went to start it after stopping at her friends place and she said it made a bunch of noise and was shaking. So she shut the engine off opened the hood to find oil everywhere and smoke from it pouring on the exhaust manifolds. I grabbed my kiddos and head over to pick her up there is a hole the size of a rocker in the passenger valve cover. Cross your fingers for me 🤞 it only damaged the VC and didn't destroy my Cylinder head. 😂

Nice and informative video. You go into some of the important mechanical theory itself, behind the valve train. Those 4.7's need more regular oil changes and good driving habits (reasonable rpm's, time to warm up in winter, etc). My 06' Commander, 140k miles, I bought for dirt cheap, they said "bad head gasket.".....turned out to be both heads were completely black and sludged oil, burnt valves, 2 dislodged rocker arms, and a few dropped valve seats. Not to mention 2 broken timing chain guides and plugged oil valleys 😂. Was a fun project and saved it from the scrapyard

So glad you emphasized to soak the lifters. Hint: move the bucket of oil around a few times to move the lifters around. If by chance one is in a position that all the ports aren't accessible to fill with oil, it "reseats" all of them an ensures penetration. Great vid.🤙

I bought a 2008 Aspen with the 4.7 it looks well maintained but had green antifreeze in it. Did not have time to look at it when I first bought it. But now I finally got the valve covers off in the rocker arms of floating around inside at least three of them. But with all the info I got him from you and Martin I believe I can fix this thing, thanks again.

I'm in the process of doing a tear down/refresh of my 4.7 Grand Cherokee. I'm having the heads rebuilt, new stem seals, new intake valve seats as a preventative, and I believe they're putting in remanufactured valves and lifters as well. For $350 a head, that's not too bad IMO. But I find that as I start doing things, I find other things I want to replace, or needs replacing. It's nice to not need to get it done right away, as it's not yet a daily driver (and I work from home 4 out of 5 days a week anyway), but it's crazy how many things pop up lol

Bought my 06 ram 1500 and once delivered had 215 miles on it.close to the end of the first year of running it i pulled a camper into the mountains of n.c. for a hunting/fishing trip. All went well and we left. Heading down the grade, in tow haul, i slowed rig and dropped it into 2nd gear to help hold me back. Even keeping it at low speed and mid high rpms i heard a change. Motor had around 25k on it at the time. Got it home, cooled off, and started it up. Been ticking ticky tic tic tic ever since. Itll tic heavy when cold and just starting up. Once the engine gets warm and pressure builds itll stop or just be a light tic. It has been a great audible warning if my oil is getting low as well. Fill it up and it diminishes. I now have 357 thousand miles on her and she is purring strong. Ive always said id do this repair job if it gets any worse. After watching this video itll be done as soon as the parts get here. Great video with great advice! I like to just take a new quart of, poor a small amount into the engine and then toss my lash adjusters into the container and cap it:.. I then agitated it periodically over a day or two... When I’m ready for them, I just use a stick magnet to fish then out then install them.

The first time I ever did the VCGs on these 4.7s, it took me over an hour to get all those damn grommets out. lol. Then I found the perfect tool. A 90 degree dirt cheap dental type pick. poke the point into the grommet and rock the angle of the pick against the VCG. it takes 30 seconds to remove them all, AND it can be easily done in the engine bay making the cover so much easier to pass through on the much harder passenger side. Great video btw.

My lash adjusters failed on a very well maintained engine right after a Seafoam treatment. Your explanation of the internal springs is great! Mine probably got trashed after the Seafoam.

Priced this through my local mechanic. They wanted $1800.00 to do this. So that's not going to be affordable at all. Watched a few videos (yours is the best btw) All parts delivered to my door from a local supplier was about $120.00. Great video and thanks for taking the time to make it.

That 1,800 quote had to be for a new cylinder head all together, along with head gasket, etc. Surely there's no way a lifter replacement would be that much

@@BrettWyrick it was a 4 for me. Accessing the lifters from over the fender was difficult (2005 1500 w/2 inch lift, 33 inch tires + Crushed vertebrae from old accident) So I dropped the radiator and cross bar support for it and climbed in the engine bay. All told 5 hours work.

I plan on doing this job on my dakota this weekend. you must be in the states lol those melling lifters off rock auto are over $15 each for me lol so i went with slightly cheaper "sealed power" ones for $11 each. Still not the cheapest ones on there but I figured new "cheaper" lifters are probably still better than the lifters that are already ticking in it lol

Another trick before doing a hot start: disconnect all the injectors, then crank it over with the starter for about 15 seconds. Wait a minute, then do it again another two times. That way you're positive oil is flowing through all of the lifters and primed properly before the first fire. Did the same thing with my 3.7 and on a ford 4.6 (which is very similar).

I run mobil 1 5w20 high mileage full synthetic in my truck. My truck has 154,000 miles and i noticed it doesnt have the pep it used to. Thank you for making the video

I’m thankful my 4.7 was well maintained by the previous owner. I think oil changes are the number one way to keep Chrysler products running good period. My ‘04 4.7 has 131K miles and my dad’s ‘11 has 160K and both run fantastic. Ticks on cold starts, but that’s almost common for the 4.7s I see. Didn’t know this was a major issue with the 4.7s.

Spittin a rocker arm 6 years ago is what shut down my '02 Overland. Back then this problem was rare and parts cost twn times what they do today. Eventually as the problem became common with aging 4.7 motors parts got cheaper.

I did an ac delete and double sided cold air intake and it makes doing every so much better I did the valve covers before that all and I hated my life

This video is super helpful! I am having issues though. I replaced all lifters and only have 4 rocker arms to pop in. The camshaft lobes are in the way and when I try turning them through the harmonic balancer, the camshaft doesn’t stay in place. (I’m turning clockwise- when I release the pressure the camshaft turns back to its original place) do you know how to fix this?

Nice informative vid buddy! Was nice to see that Milwaukee ratchet you fixed in your other vid working real nice 👌! I hope Ruby is feeling happy and healthy! Eric watch for those Ruby bits. She's a 4.7 so she bits hard! Hopefully you don't infect Barney. Being a 4.0 I'm sure he should be fine!

LOL... Compared to the 4.0, the 4.7 really is an infection. haha. Valve covers on the 4.0 take 30 minutes...

Nice job Doug.We would of liked to hear it start up with the new lifters.I know mine sounds like a diesel for the first 30 seconds....

Fair point. I should have done that.. I will tell you thank between soaking the lifters and dumping lucas on everything it did not tick for even a second. I did however have an awful miss fire on cylinder 8 because of an injector plug that was loose. That stopped my hear for a second until I realized what it was

I plan to install a remanned 2008 or newer 4.7HO long block in my 56 Dodge pickup build on my 2001 Dakota chassis. I like the 4.7 engine and Powertrain has addressed all the issues with the 4.7. Also Chrysler updated the heads casting to better support the lash adjusters. My goal is to get near 325hp at the crank. Should give my 56 comparable performance to the Dodge Lil Red Express which was known to be a strong truck.

Don't waste your time. The 4.7 is not a good engine at all. Go with a 5.7 hemi at least. I'd say go for the 350 gm LS motor. These engines don't last. Mine had to be rebuilt at 155k and I babied it. 3 head gaskets post rebuild too

Good video, if you take out spark plugs, it will be much easy to rotate, but don't drop anything down those tubes! i messed that up once and had to rebuild my 4.7, so many hours! but it runs great now...

I recently picked up a 06 Grand Cherokee 4.7. Currently has one misfire in Cyl 7, I have replace all plugs/gapped correctly, replaced all coil packs. Ensured injectors are all working. Also have tested to ensure the proper voltage is going to the coil packs/injectors. I do have a slight ticking/knocking sound shortly after starting the car and once slightly revving or driving you can hear this ticking/knocking speed up. I am leaning towards taking the driver side valve cover to see if it is a rocker/lifter issue. Do you think if one of those were to fail it would causing this noise/misfire before I attempt to take the cover of to inspect? Also replaced the EGR valve. My final step after I remove this valve cover is to test compression in Cyl 7.

Mopar oil filters have an anti-drain back check valve built in to hold the oil in the oil pump after shut down that helps prevent hydraulic lifters from falling off. I use full synthetic oil, Hy-Per Lube HPZ212 Zinc Replacement Additive, Lucas oil stabilizer, a half quart of Marvel Mystery Oil and say a prayer with every oil change :-)

I just bought a 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo and I hear it ticking sound check all the vacuum lines definitely wasn't any hissing sign definitely was a ticking sound I stumbled across this video and several others confirming on my issue now all I do is ban up and try to see if I can fix this straight six any ideas on performance rocker arms and lifters

Great video on the lifter replacement. I wanted to add that Martin has a video where he shows an upgrade to the '05 4.7 rocker arm. Smaller oil squirt hole directs oil right onto the cam lobe and rocker roller. Your thoughts on this upgrade?

Yes. I did the “Martin mod” while I was changing out the lifters. I have 237k, about 60k since the change out. So far so good. Supposedly the rockers oil much better than the og arms.

Hey buddy, great video. I know it’s been a while since you posted this but i had a question. I’ve got the 3.7 WK and i’ve got some ticking. happens at cold start, warmed up, and acceleration. It’s significantly louder from up top on the driver side. Would this job be what i’m looking for? I’m not 100% sure if it’s lifters making the noise but that’s what i’ve been told.
