This is a popular cam swap for a true HP gain with 4.7 HO Cams. This will work on all 1999-2007 Chrysler 4.7L engines. Detailed instructions on how to adjust solid lifters. The solid (lash adjusters) lifters are not required for the HO or the 08 and later camshafts but I would recommend them if you have the HO cams reground to correct rocker arm geometry. This would eliminate the need for shims under the lash adjusters. I got the Solid Lifters (Lash Adjusters) from www.airram.com Also shows how to remove and replace valve cover gaskets.

I think the 4.7 is one of the most under appreciated engines on the planet. I've owned two of them (01 Dak/07 1500) and both were animals and served me well. my 07 1500 even towed better than my current 1500 Hemi. The bottom end torque they produce is outstanding.

I've got two Grand Cherokees. 01 with 4.7 and an 05 with a 5.7 Hemi. They are both high milage and the 4.7 is a better engine by a pretty good margin. It's also just as fast despite being rated at 100 less hp.

You have to be joking, i went in my local machine shop the other day and there was these junk engines laying everywhere with holes in top of pistons on most of them where the valve seat fell out of the head. Never heard anyone say they were good engines lol. No offense, i hope yours last forever, i just would hate for you to get too far from home with it.

@@dreece2000 You didn't point out which generation of the 4.7 they were. My guess would be 1st gens. they had problems with valve seats. Gen II engines did not suffer with the problem and were the vast majority of the 4.7's used Dodge/Rams, Durango's, and Dakota's.. but dropping valve seats was not exclusive to the 4.7. Ford and Gm both had their share is nightmares with dropped valve seats, cracking, and so on (also includes those asian and euro products as well) until they got the recipe corrected.

@@dreece2000 Mines got 270,000 miles on it. Still tows and hauls great. These engines are far from being junk. Id take one of these over a 2v or 3v triton *any* day, and I'd even go as far as saying they are as good or better than their closest competition at the time, the 4.6 Ford Modular. Ive owned both. I didn't like being far from home in that stupid 4.6 Panther body. I had to keep spare ignition coils in the trunk and I was always chasing vacuum and intake leaks. It had a leaky injector that burned up both catalysts and left me on the highway. The 4.7 has been better in every way in my experience. No engine issues in all those miles.

Well I commend you for your perseverance on the whole job,, it’s definitely a task!! I’ve contemplated trying to get more power out of my 4.7 Mitsubishi Duro Cross,, my situation is I need more power than I can get from headers and solid lifters!! I was given a nice RV and it’s just too much for the pickup to pull !!! My thoughts are since I don’t get any kinda mileage from the 4.7, I’ve a mind to just swap out the motor for a 5.7 Hemi and just install the HO components before installation!! I know it sounds good but I’m sure there’s a lot of hindrances the come with that line of thinking!!! But you did a great job,, thanks for the tips!!!

I just finished doing my 04. Put 08 cams in while I was at it. If you're thinking about doing this I can highly recommend it. Be warned, it is quite tedious getting just the right lash clearance. And you cannot just make all the same length. I set the lash .0015 - .002 and the lengths of the solid adjusters varied from the shortest being 1.934" and the longest being 1.952". Also, the threads are not real fine so a little turn changes the length quite a bit, and also tightening the lock nut will have the length grow about .0005 Makes getting as close to possible to .0015 lash quite the chore. Well worth it though. Dead cold start and.....silence!! So nice not to hear the clatter on cold start not to mention how much smoother the idle is, and the bonus of a quite noticeable top end increase. UPDATE! My PCM decided to retire so I lashed the adjusters again, a couple started getting noisy again. When I checked them the .0015" lash grew to over .002, I also noticed on the base of those adjusters the wear marks were different than the rest of them. They showed localized heavy loading vs the consistent pattern on the bottoms of the ones that maintained the proper lash. My theory is the bottom of the bores the adjusters sit in are not machined very smooth, this was confirmed by looking in the bores. I think the constant pounding of the cam pushing the lash adjuster down during valve actuation pushes the lifter down with more force, not being a hyd cushion the bottom of the adjuster is very slightly flattening down the high peaks the bore cutter leaves in the bottom of the bore increasing the depth of the bore and requiring a lengthening of the adjuster to compensate for the increase in bore depth.

I noticed the min is now .002 and max .004 on the ones I just got. I was going to shoot for .003 but after hearing your comments at the end I'll go for .002 I wanted to add, I have an old Harley ironhead Sportster that uses a similar valve tappet as far as adjustment. They use a ball on both ends so a feeler gauge is out, they are adjusted by how much resistance spinning the pushrod gives. I have found when I get the right lash and then tighten the lock nut it changes oh so slightly the length of the tappet. I am finding this now doing these. On my Sportster I go slightly longer and the tightening of the locknut sneaks it down to the desired length, I found that method works pretty good doing these also. I am in Michigan, not as hot as LV, I used to live in Phoenix, but it is 90 and muggy right now. I am on my third one taking a break feeding the dogs right now.

In snow and heavy rain and a period of hale I worked my but off and got those heads HAHAHA I remember the power our Durango had with a stock 4.7l so I am extremely anxious to get this not back in my truck with these upgrades...I am also hoping to do the intake manifold from the 08 jeep and am working with a guy at Shapeways to get a special filter housing cover made so I can use the snout Style scoops on the hood of my Dakota for "ram air" Thank you so much for all of these videos...this is my first total engine rebuild and you have taught me so much and made this rebuild a breeze.

I have a 2005 Dakota and I’ve recently done new timing chains and head gaskets. That chain wedge tool will be ordered and in my tool box soon. Maybe those HO cams are in the future. Great video!!! Thanks P.S. word to the wise I ordered the timing chain master kit from rockauto and everything was good, but the sensor wheel on the passenger side was incorrect causing cam sensor code P0340 to show up on a scanner. I had to take the front of the engine off twice, because I didn’t notice the difference in that wheel. A 2005 Dakota has a N code and a J code and there’s the HO 4.7 so there was no choice in these two different vehicle codes. Pay attention to the VIN.

When ordering a timing chain set if you're PCM has 3 connectors it is a JTEC and if you have 4 connectors then it is an NGC these are the ways you tell the difference between the 2 Cam gears on the passenger side. Your 05 is definitely a NGC 4 connector PCM.

When I bought my Jeep the previous owner basically lied to me about any major engine repairs. And then I found out that one of the cylinder heads had been replaced I would imagine it was for that reason. I believe if you keep up on the oil changes and run a high quality engine oil in it that this engine will last you a long time.

The solid lifters have a few advantages a higher RPM potential especially if you're into a lot of horsepower modifications. You'll never have a lifter collapse like you will with hydraulic. martinbuilt aren't the lifters supposed to compress down just a hair and spring back up... mine are old and Frozen in the up position.. that's not a good thing there's supposed to have a little compressibility.. I'm really confused how to solid lifters work without slinging and pushing out the rocker arms...
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 6 жыл бұрын
steve mitchell I adjusting the solid lifters to the proper clearance. The hydraulic ones adjust automatically but you do lose some lift so you lose performance with hydraulic. they also have a slower closing rate. I just went out and checked all my old hydraulic ones they are all as you said frozen in the up position and they were working just perfectly fine. I would be more concerned if you could actually push them down
@stevemitchell2252
@stevemitchell2252 6 жыл бұрын
martinbuilt you are supposed to be able to push a lifter plunger down but it's supposed to spring back up there's a spring inside if it stays in the down position that's a problem or if it stays in the up position that's a problem.. there is supposed to be about a .50 valve lash cushion... if the lifter is stuck in the up position when the cam lobe comes around and pushes on The Rocker it's going to push too much force on the rocker arms and wanting to spit it out... if the lifter spring is busted lifter plunger in the down position when the cam lobe comes around now the Rockers way too loose and it can get spit out... that's why it's important for the lifters on those goofy ass 4.7 and 3.7 valve train design to be in good shape..

What if you measure the valve clearance before taking off the old rockers and lifters and couldn’t get any of them to slide in between? Tried all between .002 to .004 and nothing fit in between old the rockers and lifters
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 7 ай бұрын
The old lash adjusters are hydraulic. There should be no Clarence at all with them. You need to install your rockers and solid lash adjusters and then check the clearance and make adjustments by removing them. It takes hours to get the adjustment correct. I would try to get it down to 002. If you settle at .004, you're going to have a noisy engine. When I do the adjustments, I get it all down, too .0015 Because, as the engine warms up, the gap actually grows between between valve stem and rocker tip.

No there would be no issues doing that, you may want to just change the tone ring on the HO engine to a 32 tooth and the right cam sprocket to work with your vehicle and that way you also get the steel crankshaft.

Martin, I know this is an older video. Wondering how you liked the solid “lifters”. They every come loose on you or need adjustment? Last winter I ordered, then waited for Melling brand lash adjusters to come in because I believed them to be a good brand. They are now not staying pumped up. Might even have one or to not fully pumping up ever. It’s only been 7k miles. No dirty oil in the crank case, probably every, previous owner was meticulous. Didn’t see caked oil or dirty anything when installing HO cams. All the noises went away after replacement, first time I hammered on the truck the tick came back and hasn’t left. Not sure I wanna go solid lifters. Any other brands you recommend if they won’t replace these for me(and they prob won’t, it’s been a year even if only 7k miles)? Thanks for all you do Martin

Hi Martin, I'm driving a '03 Dakota 4.7 of course. There's an '08 Durango at my pick-a-part. I want to do the modifications you mention on your channel, but my question is: should I take the heads off the pick-a-part vehicle, or just the cam shafts and rockers? Will the whole head be compatible with my older 4.7? Is there any difference between the '03 and '08 heads besides the spark plugs? TIA
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt Жыл бұрын
Yeah there is some more differences in the 03 to 08 cylinder heads you would also need the exhaust manifold's, the fuel injectors and I would use the 08 coils and spark plug wires as well one other thing that would happen is you're gonna lose compression because the combustion chamber on the 08 is larger than the earlier models. The valves are the same size but the intake and exhaust ports are larger on the 08 I'm not sure what the actual end result would be as far as performance, fro. the loss of horsepower. You would also need the valve covers those are also different. I would just recommend grabbing the Cam shafts. Now if that was a good running engine at the salvage yard I would grab the whole thing and put that into your 03 and you would probably only have to do some exhaust modification. And a small wiring changes on the Ignition coils.

I've been searching for a set of HO cams, or better still complete HO heads with cams to rebuild for my 2000 SLT Durango 4X4 I'm doing a mild refresh on. 150K on the clock, I've owned it since brand new, so this is preemptive, not because of any issues, other than rusted and broken exhaust manifold bolts and heat shields. Having driven my HO 2002 Grand Cherokee Limited with the same gears, I want the extra HO power for my Durango as well. What a difference, feels like a lot more than 30 horsepower, though the Durango is heavier than the 02 GC, but the gears are the same.
