Try to keep your eye out for an i5/8GB Ram//256GB SSD those units with those specs are normally priced at about $200-250 which is really reasonable and they work well with a fresh install of Windows 10! Happy searching! eBay is predominantly the best place to pick one of these up!

Sébastien Van Someren Make sure your doing these 3 things. Make sure your on a newer bios update, two use high quality thermal past and clean out fan, 3 apply system critical updates. While I never worry about running an older version of LibreOffice included in Mint, I always choose to install critical updates within the first month the update gets released. The on board fan controller should be fully controlled by the bios thus sometimes updating a bios forces the bios to recalibrate the fan. If you've done all of this remove battery and back lid and pull bios backup battery.

@@sebastienvansomeren5125 Dell offers a lot of technical information in the service manuals on their site for your given model. But it's easy to do. First make sure to have a decent thermal paste. Remove the 4 or 5 screws. Dell usually uses a pad instead of paste, pads being a poor choice tend to dry out and stuff from the heat. So remove the pad, apply a very thin layer on the CPU and GPU die. Clean fan, reapply heat sink. Not terribly tough job, but before you do that, check your bios. 'f2' go down to the performance options. Make sure speed step, hyperthreading and sleep states are enabled. What this will do is allow the cpu to go up and down as performance is needed instead of staying in full power all the time. This alone can make a huge difference. Dell also offers a utility for Windows called "Dell command configure" to do stuff like this. But I don't think there's a linux equivalent. It is handy. What distro/kernel are you using? Ubuntu 16.04 has support out of box as I recall. But if your using an older distro that might not be too helpful either.

Charm Serrano depends on what you specifically mean by “home based jobs”. If definitely does work for office applications, web browsing, streaming, and downloading stuff. And it should work just fine with Windows 10, 8.1, and 7.

@@williamsaad6833 you might have a very old BIOS firmware version. Download the latest BIOS version from Dell site ( www.dell.com/support/home/de/de/debsdt1/product-support/product/latitude-e7440-ultrabook/drivers ). It solves a lot of hardware issues seen on Linux distro.

Just picked one of these up for $160 on eBay with the 1080p screen, 128gb SSD, and 4gb ram. Glad to hear Ubuntu works well with it, I'm planning to do the same. Looks like a really nice model for the off lease price. I'm curious to see how this compares to the thinkpad t440s that was pretty much a direct competitor.

The laptop did seem to have overheating and thermal throttling issues when I had it (I don't have it anymore). As far as replacing basic things like the RAM, HDD, etc. it's fairly easy. Replacing things like the motherboard might be a bit more complicated though. It depends on what you want to replace.

Yes and no. Yes, because at the beginning it had obvious thermal throttling issues and the fan was working on max speed almost constantly. No, because since I upgraded the BIOS to the latest available version the fan become really quite and no more overheating problems.

Nightcore Encode yes, technically it does support touchscreens however, it doesn’t offer the amazing user friendly experience that windows 10 provides!

Even on some of Dell’s modern laptops, the screen resolutions are still awful! I believe it’s because Dell is a mainly business focused company and most businesses wouldn’t really know the difference!

Ali Andani macOS. Linux is fine but no desktop Linux environment I've tried has overall been as good as the one in macOS or Windows IMO.

Ali Andani It depends. I overall like macOS the best usability wise, but unfourtanately you can only get macOS on Apple hardware. macOS and Linux have a lot of great software development tools, but I don't do any software development. Linux OSes are very customizable but the desktop environments don't feel as polished as macOS or Windows IMO, and not as much software is avaliable for Linux OSes compared to macOS or Windows. So therefore, I probably like Windows 10 the best due to the wide arrange of hardware it can run on, ease of use, and the wide arrange of software it can run.

I don't really have a need for one so not at the moment.

The worst thing about dell computers is that they never quit and so there never an excuse to replace it. That is why HP is so amazing. The products die rapidly and never last.

I've only ever owned one HP computer for a couple of months so I can't speak for the quality of HP products, but I've had good experiences with Dell and Lenovo though.
