I think where the confusion about feeding the temptations treats as a meal is coming from is actually on temptations themselves. On the packaging for several of the flavors of treats it has an aafco statement for complete and balanced maintenance. Which is crazy to me!

Hi! One video I would love to see you speak on is the purpose and appropriation use of pet/dog supplements. Not prescription, but supplements; and what types are considered unnecessary such as daily multi vitamins, omega 3 fish oils etc. It seems the pet supplement industry has become all the rage… completely disregarding the nutritional balance of dog food. I would love to hear your take on this!
@AnimalDocRea

I touch on this in many videos such as the Bullymax one, not a fan of supplements so that’s why I don’t really have any videos on them. Totally not necessary on most cases and often yes, unbalance a balanced diet. Not to mention they don’t take into account the inhibitory or compatibility with the main diet.

Hi!! I was hoping to give you a request to review a certain dog food. I know you’ve done one farmina before, but would you consider looking at this one? N&D Ancestral Grain Lamb and blueberry Adult Mini. The company has been really nice to work with. Answering all my questions!

Could you please do a video on dental products for dog and cats: Water additives, kelp powder that’s added to food, dental chews etc. do any of them really work, are they harmful and are they just a waste of money. Thank you!

I think that there is nothing that comes close to brushing and yearly professional cleaning. But those other things don’t hurt and long as you aren’t using them as a substitute for actual dental care

The VOHC website lists dentastix snd greenies as approved dental treats, and backs up the claims that they reduce tartar buildup. Are they not reliable?
@AnimalDocRea
@AnimalDocRea 2 ай бұрын
I don’t know much about VOHC or what criteria they use. I can tell you from 15 years of practice there is no treat that will be a substitute for brushing or professional cleaning with your vet.
@RodrigoR9
@RodrigoR9 2 ай бұрын
@@AnimalDocRea thanks, the VOHC is led by 8 veterinarians and dental scientists. All products they recommend (including Greenies and dentastix) must have peer-reviewed research proving its effectiveness, and must meet the council's guidelines. Their recommendations are backed by science and their arguments are similar to the arguments I see in this channel to promote certain dry food brands (as opposed to anecdotal, experience-based arguments that I see in other channels promoting raw food diets). So I don't understand why the skepticism on dentist treats, but the support for dry food diets.
@AnimalDocRea
@AnimalDocRea 2 ай бұрын
@RodrigoR9 I don’t think dry diets do any difference either for dental health. I don’t believe I’ve actually ever made that statement and have attested to the contrary many times in the comments. I said that clinically I don’t find that treats ( or dry food) are comparable to brushing. They may reduce tartar but to go from 90% to 80% tartar and disease is a “statistically proven reduction” but in clinic it does not compare to the reduction to 10% you see with consistent brushing and routine professional cleaning. If they have a paper and data that suggests dentastix or greenies out perform brushing and professional cleaning , I’d be surprised and stand corrected.

I'm so sorry if you've already addressed this in one of your prior videos. I've tried to binge watch them all but so far have not come across this yet. Are the AAFCO nutritional guidelines the same as the small animal clinical nutrition guidelines? Which one is accurate? Thank you so much for all of your help!
@AnimalDocRea
@AnimalDocRea 2 ай бұрын
AAFCO is a wide range set by a government agency to ensure that a pet food company meets minimum standards for survival and do not make false pet food labeling claims. AAFCO is not meant to set standards for health or management of disease. They do not care about optimal nutrition but that a food is not deficient or inaccurately labeled for the consumer's benefit, not the pet. SACN are numbers based on data that support the optimal nutrient levels for each life stage and species and the pet is the primary priority. SACN numbers are more tailored and provide both minimum and maximum recommendations that are true ideals.

I'm a mean mom, I don't give treats. My 3 pets (including yes even my pug) are all an ideal weight. My dog gets about 3 teeny, tiny shreds of chicken breast in his kibble every day, and he gets a tiny bit of meat that we cook. Instead, they get a ridiculous amount of love cuddles, playtime, and many walks. This was a fun video to watch though, good thing Buddy doesn't understand what you are talking about because he's resting on my lap. =)

Hello, I recently switched my dog to gently cooked dog food. I noticed one of the ingredients contains garlic powder. Is that something that is harmful to dogs? I was always under the assumption garlic is poisonous to them. Thank you!!
@AnimalDocRea
@AnimalDocRea 2 ай бұрын
Garlic is toxic and would depend on the amount of it in the food. I’m sure it’s added as a palate inducer and one would hope in small amount that would be insignificant but you would have to 1. Call and find out 2. Be confident in their quality control and processing that they actually know how much goes in. This would be a case where feeding trials would be beneficial.

@@AnimalDocRea that makes sense. They claim is used since it has antiseptic and anti-fungal properties, but I’m not sure what the dose is. This food is called Caravan Country Cookhouse. If by any chance you would be able to review this to ensure it is safe, I would really appreciate it!! Thank you so much for all you do. This pet food industry is so confusing, and it is so nice to have someone simplify everything.

@victoriamasiak5333 garlic has no evidence to show any anti fungal or anti microbial properties in animals of any appreciable value so it seems like we have a company that either is uneducated or is playing the marketing game, neither is good. I would have been happier if they just said it was for palatability

@@AnimalDocRea Hi Dr. Rea, I reached out to the company to inquire about the reasoning and dose or garlic in the food and this was their response. Please let me know your thoughts! It was thought that garlic, in the same plant family as onions, were toxic to dogs. However, recent research shows that in small doses, it actually has significant health benefits. It’s known to have antibiotic, antifungal and antiparasitic properties, the ability to lower cholesterol, and even prevent the formation of tumors. Not to mention, it also works as a natural flea and tick repellant. Too much of any good thing can become unhealthy. Caravan recipes contain only 0.77g of garlic per 1lb package. A safe dose for a 10lb dog would be roughly 2 g daily of fresh garlic.

They get a very small amount of wellness Kittles crunchy treats every night. Do you think that is ok for every day? It’s a ritual now. They get less than the daily recommended amount every day.

Carmen! LOL My grandson has over 1000 Nerf darts here. The cats love to play with them as they are easy to catch and carry around. It is a constant battle to keep the cats out of the backpack that holds the darts. The only treat I use is freeze dried chicken. We use it rarely as it is something easy for my granddaughter to feed the cats. I posted a picture on IG of Colbie trying to keep me from watching this video when you were talking about dogs!
