I have to say, figuring out what food to feed dogs is challenging. There’s so much information out there- everyone seems to have their own biases and preferences, and many people don’t even agree on basic premises. I consider myself fairly open minded which is almost worse in this case because there’s so many choices out there. The only positive light I can bring is that people truly care about their pets and that’s why there’s such an enthusiastic debate around what to feed our pets. I hope one day there is clarity brought to this debate because right now, deciding what to feed is confusing and quite frankly even stressful.

Rea, do you think you could review Millie's Wolfheart dry dog food? It's probably one of the best foods I've been able to find, since the ingredients mostly line up with what I personally want to feed my dogs and the nutrient levels seems pretty good for their 'average dog' recipes. They market themselves as working dog food as it means that they don't have to add VAT onto the price, but a good portion of their foods are suitable for dogs living more sedentary lives. They provide a graph stating which food to use depending on the dog's daily activity levels, with Peak Performance being suitable for dogs working between 6 and 7 hours a day and Tracker/Highland Low Fat mixes being suitable for dogs who exercise less than 30 minutes a day. My only qualm is that only one of their foods is legume free, but the other foods don't contain huge amounts of legumes regardless.

@@AnimalDocRea It definitely seems like a good option for people like myself, who aren't a big fan of more mainstream brands but still care about nutrient levels. Some of their foods do go above or below the guidelines set out by Small Animal Clinical Nutrition, however if I remember right, the foods that go higher are geared towards dogs that are in their prime and out working for hours a day. Peak Performance, for example, is very high in fat and Hunter is very high in protein, and the foods that go lower only go lower in fat for dogs that need less calories. I just love how they've taken the nutritional needs of a variety of different dogs into account. My dogs are currently on their Countryside mix as that's the only legume free option, however I'm considering moving them onto either Highland or Tracker since they'd be more suitable for their lifestyle. I'm just trying to figure out ways that I can prevent DCM on a legume-inclusive diet before I make any changes (if you've any ideas, then please let me know). Their foods are also made entirely without any chicken or eggs, which is an absolutely *huge* bonus for me since one of my dogs is sensitive to both. They're also quite affordable, depending on the recipe you buy, compared to similar foods on the market purely because they're labelled as working dog foods. And, contrary to their name, they don't believe in the wolf diet for dogs! That's something I found particularly interesting.

In general I do not make food recommendations, I teach consumers how to methodically evaluate pet food labels and detect industry marketing traps. I don't have any specific reviews on many canned canine foods. I can tell you in general canned foods will be more expensive than dry foods. You may consider reviewing the Playlists of foods scoring 7+ and then soaking it to soften it as a more economical approach.

Sardines or poached salmon once a week. And raw ground beef. Good luck

16:16 - and a dog's skull is too weak to take down deer on their own. Their jaws are more similar to rodent-dependent canids or generalist canids than to big-game canids; yet a dog's body mass is too large to subsist on only rodents, which imply they depends on humans to provide the nutrients The outlier to the "cost of carnivory" paragdim is the maned wolf whose diet is mostly fruits.

7:17 - Yeah, the Robet Losey paper on foraging behaviours say Siberian dogs eat lots of fish, whereas their wolf counterparts do not. 7:17 - this argument Farmina is making nakes no sense. There's a BBC documentary hosted by Dr. Alice Roberts in "Origin of Us" (2011) about how humans physically cannot eat enough raw vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds and tubers to meet our daily caloric needs. We need to actually cook the plant natters and extract oils from the nuts and seeds to even digest or have room

A dog's teeth reflect the mechanics of the ripping and tearing of food. They also possess a shortened gastrointestinal tract, versus the longer Gl tract of an omnivore or herbivore. In addition, dogs don't have amylase, an enzyme that breaks down sugars, in their saliva, like an omnivore and herbivore would have. The relative inability to convert plant based sources of Omega-3 fatty acids into EPA and DHA is also a strong indication of carnivore status. Despite this, omnivorous humans have been feeding dogs omnivorous diets for years, filled with plant based protein sources such as corn and rice. And this is why dogs now live to an average age of 11.5 when they are genetically able to live into their 20's. Cheap omnivores carbohydrate diets are killing dogs at a faster rate than ever in history.

Dr. Rea says it 1:17. Farmina is a dog-kibble company, yet they're using the same marketing tactics as raw-food companies. So, Farmina's manufacturing is not in line with their marketing. No one refutes dogs cannot digest raw grains, tubers or vegetables. Those are not bioavailable to humans either. Even lichens needs tto be fermented in reindeer stomach in order to be digestible to wolves, dogs and humans in environments where meat is the only food source. Since Farmina cooks their food, then Farmina pretending to be a raw food manuufscterer makes no sense.

Are you asking for clarification, or are you trying to be confrontational? "Taxonomically, cats and dogs are members of the order Carnivora and are therefore classified as carnivores (Table 12-4). From a dietary perspective, however, dogs are omnivores. (Chapter 12)." Small Animal Clinical Nutrition Book, 5th ed., page 362. Dogs and humans can process non-meat protein sources, safely. That does not mean we don't need meat. And neither dogs nor humans should be vegan. My cats have been fed a homemade meat diet for over a year. I still can be respectful to Dr. Rea.

@@roberthynesdogtrainingTaxonimcally, dogs are carnivores like panda bears (herbivore) and aardwolf (insectivore). Ethiologically, dogs are considered scavengers. And morphically, dogs have more in common with rodent specialists like foxes or witth generalists like coyotes than with hypercarnivores like grey wolves and dire wolves; but dogs also have the weird quirk where their body mass to jaw strength ratio is similar to the maned wolf, which is a frugivore. Archeologically, dogs are well-adapted to agriculture except amongst Inuit populations. Evolutionarily, dogs were hypercarnivores (Late Paleoscene wolvves from Central Asia and East Siberia) who became generalists by transitioning to a fish-based diet (backed by anthropology) then adapted to a grain-based diet based (backed by archeology and genomics). And frankly, ecologically, most hunter-gatherer can only feed one to three dogs. Unless they have access to fish or grains, then a family can keep up to ten dogs or more. There's a real hard limit on how much the environment can support a deer-based diet.
@WokelandDefector

Both dogs and cats are meant to be carnivorous. Will they eat veggies on occasion? Yes. I occasionally eat a meatless meal. That doesn't make me a vegetarian. Both my cats and dogs will eat veggies, yogurt, etc. if I give it to them. But if I put a bowl of meat and a bowl of veggies in front of them, guess which one will be passed up in favor of the other - EVERY time - for BOTH of them. Look at our teeth and digestive systems compared to those of dogs and cats. It's pretty clear that we humans were designed to live an omnivorous life but both dogs and cats were designed to be carnivores - with the occasional veggie meal when meat is scarce. But we've been slowly driving our pets to disease and death by feeding them high carb processed garbage diets because it is more convenient for us. Feed both your dog and cat an all - or at least almost all - meat diet and they will most likely be healthier and live longer.

I think Dr. Rea is more pointing out the contradiction in Farmina's formulations. They use grains, tubers etc in their products, yet market like raw food or freeze-dried or dehydrated pet food companies Farmina would be correct if the grains, tubers, seeds, vegetables etc are uncooked and raw. Both dogs annd humans do not digest raw plant mattters very well. But Farmina still cook their ingredients, which makes their marketing not in line with their own production.
