This is a very underrated song, never had the popularity as other songs in the album, but it is as good as those. One of my favorites, too bad they never played it again live, like so many others.

It's a very nihilist song. Wich is quite rare in music industry. But yet it still got an optimistic way of thinking. You're going to die but yet you woke up today ... even if you know that nothing = the dark = the void = death awaits you. Cause life is still full of surprises=joys. Even if the end of the road is not. I realy love that gem, that only a few people know and apreciate. Even the music is an almost constant loop, like wake up, go to work, get to bed, wake up, go to work etc ... with a lots of repetitiv industrial sounds. Like an endless machine ... cruching your soul. But making you want to move your body. Perfect for waking up in the morning, before going to work. ^^

My ring tone!!! One of the best songs they’ve ever produced. And yes, the songs merge into one another, digital format kills the flow. The live version is amazing, they don’t play it live anymore and I’m glad because Dave’s voice is so harsh these days, and that f#cking drummer, and the keyboard player that makes up sh!t on the fly. I saw the Masses tour and the World Violation tour and the Devotional tour, and then Alan Left and everything became a little less and a little less. They didn’t tour Ultra, but I saw The Singles Tour. I didn’t see them again until 2018 Spirit tour and I wasn’t impressed. It’s so difficult to choose between Violation or Devotion tour, it would have to be the Devotional tour, what would have made it perfect would have been if they played Nothing, The Sun And The Rainfall and My Joy. You’ll love World In My Eyes the first song on Violator!!!

The production shines even more in the 5.1 mix. Backgroud voices are more noticeable and the panning is great.

This one is the definition of a total banger. It's impossible to listen to without breaking out in some serious head bobbing and body grooving. Love that alternating octave metallic keyboard part that runs throughout. Martin's jangly guitar. And those vocal bends Dave does when he sings "life" and "always" on the 2nd half of the verses is just fantastic.

Apparently the hi hat sound is actually a sample of the bands tour bus doors opening and closing. I think I heard Dave Bascombe mention it in an interview once.

I think that back in 2017 in one of the videos with the fans Dave said that Nothing was his and Alan’s favorite song from the album. It’s amazing! The cynical and pessimistic text that questions what you believe in. The catchy melodies, pumping rhythm and sleek guitar, not to forget about yet another great vocals by Dave. I can only imagine how blasting it sounded live, but 101 captures it perfectly. I agree with the other guys here, it’s one of the highlights of MFTM

Yes, there's a transition between both songs and the live video/version is great, there's an Instrumental part that is just good and you can see they enjoyed it.

All these references to 101 -- yes you have to see the live version with this where the fans are dancing on the bus -- the joy is contagious! Are you planning on doing 101 after MftM? It's the next album but part of me can't wait for you to get to Violator... but really it's going to be all good no matter what you decide...

This is basically a rock'n'roll song, there's usually at least one per album. Dark lyrics set to happy music. Keep in mind they were from a working-class town, very dull, and if they hadn't gotten the music going, they'd still be working their dead-end banking jobs. I think this informs Martin's lyrics. The one lyric I have a problem with, not to get all religious on ya, is "God is saying nothing." God says plenty if you know how to listen. This could have been the fourth single easily. And yes, it was great live. (Watch "101"!) This is the first time Martin stepped forward to play guitar for the whole song. Mind blown!

Love this song. Other songs like Strangelove and Never Let Me Down Again get most of the love from this album but I consider this right up there with them. You’re right, this song is bloody good live but unfortunately they only played it once out of the many times I’ve seen them. This is on the live 101 album. Next up is the instrumental Pimpf, which was their walk on stage song for the 101 concert leading into Behind the Wheel. Don’t forget to do the album version of Strangelove. It’s amazing. Better than the version you reviewed.

Watch the live version from Depeche mode 101 and you will really FEEL it! I saw them perform this in 1990 LIVE and it was Sublime! Put simply, Martin is just a masterful writer....

Nothing is better in live. Next one Pimpf is an instrumental masterpiece. It's was the intro of the "tour for the masses" . When you know what this song is about you understand than DM is a very very clever band. I can send you the Linkedin link where a french explains what this song is about, it's very very interesting.

Here is the content of the article. If you speak english you'll use a translator :) Petite analyse musicale : Depeche Mode sort ce titre, Pimpf, sur son album de 1987. D'abord destiné à être une simple face B, il intègre l'album. Pourquoi, alors que ce titre est dissonant ? Dans le livre Mon ami Frédéric, de Hans Peter Richter, le nom Pimpf désigne les membres des jeunesses hitlériennes. Le côté grandiloquent de la production est fait pour évoquer Wagner, le compositeur préféré d'Hitler. Quant à la rythmique, c'est du 6 / 8, soit une mesure ternaire, faite pour donner un côté tourbillonnant et entêtant. Cette mesure ternaire est majorée par les motifs en boucle qui se superposent progressivement, dans un crescendo de parties musicales. Enfin, les mélodies dissonantes et les voix suraigües finissent par faire un maelström sonore qui donne la nausée. Pimpf est donc un titre instrumental dont la force est de condamner avec une rare puissance le nazisme et son cortège macabre de dérives funèbres sans une seule parole... Music for masses is a film that is available on you tube only in a fragmented form, put together the puzzle and see it creates a joint complete story of sound and visual thought, I recommend watching it :)) This trick also refers to the album Violator :))
