Jack The Ripper Tour

Жыл бұрын

At noon on the 9th of November 1888, the day that Mary Kelly was murdered in Miller's Court, off Dorset Street in Spitalfields, Mrs. Annie Paumier was selling chestnuts on the corner of Widegate Street and Sandy's Row, when a man came up to her and asked her if she had heard about the murder.
He then went on to make several strange statements, before staring at her and heading off along Sandy's Row.
Mrs. Paumier told the story to a journalist from one of the news agencies, and the next day her description of the mysterious stranger appeared in newspapers across the country.
The description she gave of the man lodged in the imagination of the public at large, and helped foster an image of Jack the Ripper that is still with us today.
In this video, we take you through Mrs. Paumier's encounter and also look at a statement made by another girl who may have seen the same man on the day before Mary Kelly's murder.

I shared a school bus with a murderers brother who possibly was the real or assistant murderer. He was strangely quiet, and not because he was small or weird, just quiet. Their sister, who was in some classes with me, was perfectly normal. There were thousands of weirdos in London, just like nowadays..

A lot of eyewitness accounts say he was small, young (32 ish) with a carroty moustache and some say with an Irish accent. Remember, at the Hanbury Street murder of Annie Chapman a neighbour said they heard someone leaping over the fence. But we don't really know what he looked like and never will but I always thought it must be someone more young and fit than an older man.

Thank you Mr. Jones. I find it hard to believe that someone who certainly would have stood out in the mainly very poor neighborhood of Whitechapel could have gone unnoticed in all the other murders wearing that type of outfit and carrying a bag. I find it much more likely that the Whitechapel murders where committed by someone who blended in and therefore was unnoticed. Moreover it’s more likely that the Ripper lived in the neighborhood, and knew all the alleyways, shortcuts, nooks and crannies by heart. It would be interesting to see an episode about the walking cane that originally was given to Chief Inspector Abberline, believed to depict a suspect in the case of Jack the Ripper. There was allegedly a facial composite of the killer, which researchers at the College of Policing believe this cane is based on. It has resurfaced again in the archives after it was thought to have been lost after a renovation.

I don’t think Annie saw the ripper. I think Jack was local and dressed pretty much like the locals would. He would have stuck out like a sore thumb if he dressed in a top hat and cape. We've been fed over the years the image that JtR was a toff in cloak top hat and bag roaming the dark streets with a sharp bloodied knife. The myth as sold thousands of books and also kept the JtR industry going. But realistically JtR was just an ordinary man that no one would look twice at. Just like Lechmere.

I disagree. It is pretty obvious, from all the extent evidence, that he was indeed a toff who roamed the White chapel area in the night and early hours whilst wearing a gold leaf cloak, a solid gold top hat and carrying a solid gold briefcase stuffed with cash. He also had mustachios that he would twirl in villainous fashion at the drop of a hat.

You really don't want to bother with 'They all love Jack". Much as I like Bruce Robinson he really went off the boil with that book and him saying he had definitely identified who JtR was, was laughable. @@adoculos4521 I can't say I know for sure, but I believe that the killer was Charles Allen Lechmeir, AKA Charles Cross. His real name was Lechmeir. I watched this with great interest...I recall a story that I heard firstly as a child and more openly as I grew ....it would seem to be a very familiar story to this , which I must admit that up until now I had never come across......my story is as follows. We are a family that have old roots in the eastend of London, namely bethnal green / brick lane area.. At the height of the ripper murders my great grandmother had to sick sons , twins and both suffering from scarlet fever and both were taken to the London hospital whitechapel where unfortunately the health of one of the boys took a turn for the worst.. he was placed " ON THE GATE " a term which meant his time was coming to an end and the hospital sent word that my great grandmother should come quickly.... at the time the family lived in Columbia road E1 , this was close to the junction of bethnal green road and the top of brick lane and not to be confused with Columbia road E2 the site of the flower market.... On receiving the news of her son my great grandmother took the shortest route down through brick lane and heading on to whitechapel road... Midway down brick lane by Truman's brewery she was approached by a man , who stopped her and ask what she was doing at such a late hour ?... She told the man she was making for the london hospital where her son was dying. Again he questioned her and after a while said he would accompany her to the hospital, he also added he hoped she was telling the truth... she hurried off towards the hospital with this man following closely behind but never beside her.. On reaching the hospital she went up the front stone steps and looked back to see this man standing and the foot of the steps waiting to see her enter... of course she did and where she stayed until the passing of her child ...only then did the chilling reality dawn on her .. When ask what the man looked like she said like any other .. but strangely never made eye contact.... It may have been nothing , it may have been an encounter but my grandmother recalled that her mother never ventured out at night ever again after the experience......

Seeing a 'toff' walking around the roughest parts of the East End in the early hours of the morning would not actually have been such a surprising thing. There was a strange craze for what they called 'slumming it' amongst the more salacious members of the upper classes which included obviously visiting brothels but also just soaking up the scenes of destitution and poverty that they thankfully were not part of. Annie Paumier's description feels like an identikit Victorian stage villain but only in hindsight, at the time those kind of characters really did exist.

It’s a chance in a million that these folks talked with the Ripper, and those are impressive odds. Also, the killer would be an asinine fool to advertise himself in this way. He would have been a good target for thieves, footpads, and even prostitutes and their Pimps. A criminal on the street even today would not want to wear distinctive clothing let a lone carrying a leather bag. Even if he could exit the street to a bolt hole, he would stand out. If he was disturbed and a hue and cry was sounded and the chase was on, he would be incumbered by the bag, cloak and hat, would he discharge such items, that may lead to his identification, ie hatters would attach their label, like wise the bag. The only one that may match was an American, who lived in the area ,but there was no mention of an accent.
