I can’t help but agree with what John Linneman said: they should’ve called this a Director’s Cut like what Ghost of Tsushima got because it’s very similar. They gave us some additional content, PS5 haptic support, and slight visual enhancements. Calling this a remaster is really overselling what this game is.

Pretty much what I expected. Can hardly tell any difference. It does speak volumes for what they truly achieved ps4 for sure.

All games should have an unlock framerate option for preserving purposes with newer hardware.

The "No Return" game mode could have been an amazing couch co-op experience. PS5 should be able to handle split-screen quite well for this game, but sadly that isn't a thing anymore

I was disappointed with the visual modes until you reached the VRR support section. It's always amazing when developers support this, now I can either play at 1440p 75-100fps or 4K 40-60fps. Rather than just a locked 1440p60 on the updated build.

The shot to Ellie at 4:27 basically shows that they replaced the render they did for the base game of the ending scene of Part 1 with how the PS5 remake of Part 1 does it. If you play both PS5 games back-to-back, it’s probably for the sake of consistency.

*I wish Rockstar would offer a patch for RDR2* since I still haven't played while waiting for the 60fps mode (which apparently it can handle pretty well) Naughty added a free update and for $10, they have added so much more content, small fixes, and even the audio haptic feedback. And TLOU2 is 3.5 years old while RDR2 is 5 years old.

Im curious how you didnt comment on the low frame rate fire effects used in some areas? I noticed it on my 60fps play through where some fire assets are obviously baked in at a lower frame rate. I thought they would at least update those for the ps5 version, but i noticed the same choppy fire at 09:15

TLOU from PS3 to PS4: 4x more resolution on Textures, better shadows, from native 720P to 1080P, double the framerate, better everything. TLOU2 from PS4 to PS5: More grass.

Not much of a graphical or technical upgrade. The game is still incredibly gorgeous across PS4 & PS5. However, that $10 upgrade is primarily justified by the new No Return survival mode, Lost Levels, & Developer Commentary.

The visual enhancements really should be free considering how tiny they are.

Is the audio on this mixed extremely low? I have my headohones on max volume and its almost not audible. At 30% where i listen to most things i cant hear it at all

The load times actually seem to be the main draw.

What i believe happened here is that devs at Naughty Dog knew that sooner or later the massive multiplayer project will not pan out as intended, and hence were forced by the studio to release atleast something to keep the brand image afloat while they put all their (newly freed) resources on an un-announced IP. This update/re-release feels like an attempt to keep fans pleased till some new project reaches the final stage.

Looking back, its pretty impressive that this game looks as good as it does AND ran on a ps4, albiet at 30 fps

I only have one question- when I played TLOU pt 1 on my ps5 and LGC2 (55 inch) - I loved the look of fidelity 4K but it induced this horrific motion blur that was not adjustable like the blur in the blur settings. It made the game unplayable in this mode. Even with VRR / 120hz in my OLED. Does this fidelity mode also have this issue????

The last of us already has more remakes and remasters than actual games. It's not enough to just be a slight difference when so many of its peers release similar upgrades for free.

I love this game, but the difference is so minimal I cant believe they are charging for this especially when GOW Ragnorok released Valhalla dlc for FREE!

I can't seem to get my 120hz LG AI thinq TV to enable vrr even though i can hit the green button 8 times and it says vrr on or off, but it just locks whatever I'm playing to 120. Does anybody know how to activate vrr on it? It has instant game response mode and HD ultra deep color mode, which are advertised as essentially vrr but they clearly are not vrr. I can't find a vrr toggle anywhere and I've been trying to for over a year now. Anybody else with the same TV or somebody who knows how to fix my issue able to help me turn on vrr? It doesn't seem possible no matter what i try and it's a bummer because i bought my TV for games like this and i can't use all available visual settings. Even my ps5 and series x both say in settings that my TV isn't capable of vrr, but then why would it say vrr on or off when i press green button 8 times? It's so confusing and help would be very appreciated!

Did they compensate the shutter angle of the motion blur for 60fps in this version? They didn’t do this in the back compat patch for the PS4 version, resulting in a big reduction in motion blur at the higher frame rate. I’m curious about the shutter angle and also the depth of field effects. Shutter angle and Bokeh DoF need to be turned up in intensity when the frame rate or resolution are increased, respectively speaking.

Happy to see the unlocked frame-rate option. All games should have this option as a way to future-proof. If there’s ever a PS5 Pro or if PS6 has backwards compatibility, it’ll give your game the chance to shine more than ever before.

Great video as usual, but one small feedback- the graphics modes description is a bit confusing to be honest. It makes perfect sense after watching the whole video, but it really was confusing as all the modes were introduced without real structure. Would've been great to get an introduction table at the start of the graphics section.

Regarding Ambient Occlusion (6:31), maybe the increase in resolution makes the game render more foliage on top of the AO of the foliage behing thus making the image looking like it lacks depth when in reality, there's just more things rendered in front of the AO, blocking the shadowy effect. This is a phenomenon similar to what appens in GTA V regarding anti-aliasing: when using MSAA, the game makes the grass look kind of transparent, which makes it look like it lacks some detail compared to classic FXAA ; the explanation lies in the fact that it just renders too many samples and just can't show them, making it look transparent on anything below 4K.

I just want all this to translate into a decent PC port, unlike Part I. It's incredible what they managed to pull off initially on PS4, and upon reading their Siggraph presentation , some of their shader / material work sounds very impressive & artist-friendly.

This feels more akin to the “Director’s Cut” label that Ghost of Tsushima and Death Stranding got rather than an actual remaster. But for a $10 upgrade I’m happy to get a few new features.

Why absolutely NOTHING happens with Bloodborne since it's launch but we get stuff like this instead?!

I can see why they let you upgrade for £10 as that's a decent price for the new mode. But it's strange how gow ragnarok with story content was given for free.

It's subtle, and may just be a result of the remaster being darker overall, but to my eye there seems to be a little less inappropriate light bleed on at least on primary character assets in areas like under the arms, hair, between the thighs, and in the folds of clothing. It's the kind of improvement I normally associate with bent normals or some kind of tracing solution, but might also just be some kind of granularity bump to whatever system they were using before.

Big problem of original Tlou2 - lot places where Shadows just turned OFF, must places in Serafits levels, like Garage and Shop (from E3 trailer). Also very small draw distance for Serafits models and their clothes.

We need to find a new word to define these games because calling them remasters is genourous. They're closer to ports than anything else.

I think the biggest reason for all the negativity and complaints is the "Remastered" in the title. This is an enhanced PS5 port with extra content, no remaster. If it was called "Definitive Edition" or "Director's Cut", the backlash wouldn't be this huge. But to be fair, this is still TLOU Part II, so some people will always keep complaining about this game.

Anyone else having the problem where the upgrade is not showing for 10 dollars, only the full price game? I have the lock icon on the PS4 version but I can still play it. I own the THOU and bought it on another account, however since I have console offline sharing enabled it shouldnt matter right? I also have restarted my data base and restored my licenses, though the lock symbol and the full price game still show...

IMO this game couldn’t really look any better. It already looks better than 90 percent of games out there. I’ll pay the 10 bucks to be able to play with Joel and Tommy though

Honestly this game's AA implementation is so good that the 1440p output just looks like a slightly imperfect and moodier camera lens. Is it weird that I prefer it to the "pixel perfect" 4K?

I think they are using this to plug a financial hole after the multiplayer collapse. I couldn't tell what was different from the free upgrade before this video. After the video I feel none the wiser as to why I should spend a tenner, for a horde mode I won't play, some unfinished levels and some commentary. This is the Emperors new clothes of remasters.

I’m really thankful for DF’s deep dive on this title. I’m really torn…sure it’s $10USD, however it still feels like a money grab to me. It’s a title that’s been lightly reworked, in the sense of noticeable changes for end users - not remastered.

Kind of a bummer the textures and shadows were not improved even more. Looks overall like a cash and grab extra fan service after the planned standalone online mode got cancelled. Upgrading for 10 € is ok for me - I guess.

For a game almost 3 years old, hitting the abandoned software mark with old tech and all, it is still holding up the test of time.

Each split scene is sharper in the new version. This might come down to a different anti-aliasing method?

I don't really care if only FPS or resolution gets adjustments. I wish we saw more creativity with games & what "extra" stuff they do with games. We used to have over the top sports games, wacky action adventure games, hack & slash (that ISN'T a souls like game) i just wish we could get some games that tap into the way PS2-360 games used to be before things were built around the Internet. So we got a range of game modes, offline gameplay against CPU bots, cheat codes, etc.

Just as expected. If you own the original, there is almost no need to pick this up, especially with the 60fps patch for PS5, unless you're a superfan of the series.

Ah ok, almost 4 years now, dozens of hours with my psychologist, I think I'm ready to replay it.

I played the original on a base PS4 on a 1080p TV and it looks and plays amazing. I now have a PS5 and a larger 4k TV and I worry I won't be able to tell a difference with the new version besides 60 fps. I never did try the PS4 version on the PS5.

This feels like more of a director's cut of the game than a remaster. The extra content isn't bad, and considering they're allowing people to "upgrade" for $10 is nice for that extra content, but calling it a remaster is a stretch. They could have just either relabeled it to The Last of Us Part II director's cut or just straight up made the extra content paid DLC. The PS5 backwards compatible version of PS4 looked great and ran at 60fps. I'd literally need a magnifying glass to see any visual differences.

The main draw here definitely isn't the visual improvement. It's the dualsense haptics and the additional roguelike mode for me. Definitely worth the $10 considering it's more than a visual upgrade.

Haven't found any mention of this but been playing TLOU2 remastered and have been experiencing stuttering, especially when there's about to be a cutscene or when I'm crafting. Anyone else having this experience? Thinking of rebuilding PS5 database to see if that might help...Had the same issues with the PS5 remake of TLOU. Really annoying.

So, this is what I think. Naughty Dog had not planned to release a remaster of ToU2, not at least at this time since they were working with the multiplayer but when they had to canceled the multiplayer they decided to release this "remaster" with elements that they had already worked on for the multiplayer, such as the customizations of weapons.

I love TLOU but I'm disappointed that they want $10 for the upgrade if you already own it on PS4. On the other hand, Capcom released RE2R AND RE3R with PS5 upgrades for free if you already own the PS4 version. I get naughty dogs thinking but I wonder what went into it... did they rewrite code or basically just change graphics settings and change the buffer frequency for loading times. Either way I want the remaster so I gotta come up with $10.

I can agree with the comments criticising the use of the word *remastered* to describe the release, when it looks largely similar to the original game (post-PS5 patch)... but it already looked fantastic. Without the additions it would have been harder to justify at full-price, but with those and a £/$10 upgrade for it, it's a no-brainer for me.

Honestly the lights in the remastered version looks a little bit brighter but that is all. This upgrade only worth if you wanna play No Return imo

Ok so the visuals are the same. Please say if the haptic controls are like those on Part 1 now? I really liked the trigger feel of the revolver in part 1. For me that would be worth the $10 plus the faster loading times.

Are there Now CONTACT SHADOWS present in teasers of the game before release (PS4) that aren't present on the PS4 version? To me one of the key things I wanted them to work in. Was expecting WAY MORE for a REMASTERED by them (image quality wise), resolution is not everything...but for the price it makes sense, just a missed opportunity I feel.

I never finished the first one and I happen to have a PS5 now, so I'm probably going to come back to it if I can figure out the controls again easily enough without having to start all the way over.

Just waiting on this to release on PC. I truly enjoyed Part 2 when it originally released. Hopefully they do a better job of porting this game than they did porting Part 1. Great Vid guys!!

Dumb question. Why does VRR have to be turned off in order to play the 40hz mode? TLOU1 remake offers 40hz with VRR and 120hz mode turned on, so it’s weird they have extra hoops to jump thru for this. I thought VRR capable tvs was essential for 40fps?
