The first of TCL's new XL line is officially here. The 85-inch R745 offers a lot of promise for those who want to go with a big, cinematic TV without taking out a second mortgage. We get started on the path to our review by unboxing and setting up (you won't believe that that involves) and getting some first impressions. In terms of sheer size, this will be one of the biggest TVs of the year.

This is the new TV I've been waiting for. Can't wait for your review. I still like to go to the theater, but think that an 85" in my home theater room can get me close to that cinema experience. Games should look awesome on this beast too!

I purchased the TCL 75 inch series 8 in December of 2020 which was the biggest and best offering TCL had at the time. If this new 85 inch delivers comparable (hopefully better) picture quality the viewing experience would be truly enjoyable. However, it really needs to be coupled with a robust surround sound system to do justice to a TV like this. When I added the Sonos Arc coupled with the 3rd Gen Sub to mine it took the entire viewing experience to a whole new level of enjoyment. I also went with a highly adjustable tilt and rotation wall mount setup yielding much better viewing angles and I'm sure would do the same for this 85 inch.

With not going to movie theaters I recently bought 70" 4K HDR 10 tv vs the 50" 1080p we used to have. I sit like 5ish feet from it and is the perfect size to be immersed in the content in addition to my 5.1 surround sound and hue bulbs.

Depends on the size of your room and how many people are watching from how close. 85" can do quite well in a small theatre room.

So I have my 65 inch TCL r635 from 2020 and that has EVERYTHING this tv has. I’m glad I went with the 2020 6 Series. Best choice I’ve ever made for tech.

@@prashanthopenwave I never even considered getting a 65 inch before but the price of the hisense with a 5 year best buy warranty is about the same as QN90A 55 inch. It's a no brainer IMO. plus it has dolby vision and 2 hdmi 2.1 none of the samsung bs.

@Plankton Correct! I just checked and you are right the specs show it is HDMI 2.0. SO I am going with LG's new TV LG 86NANO90UPA it has 2 HDMI 2.1 plus ATSC 3.0 which I have 12 stations in my area and I really wanted to try that out.

If I had an 8500 sq ft house with a huge living room, I might go for this. But since I live in a small apartment, I'm fine with my 55" Samsung. I remember watching TV on a small 12" CRT TV back in the '50s and this is by far the extreme. TV buying has become for some, an obsession. I, for one, am not obsessed. There is just so much you can do to watch TV. Since most broadcast stations are still stuck in past century with 1280 x 720 transmission, then again this would be over kill. The only way you are going to get that "dynamic" brilliance that everybody goes Ahhhhh! about well, you'll need a comparable 4k or 8k disk player. Netflix, Hulu, or something else might have those Extreme High Definition films available, but again, that would be currently limited. So, thanks for the video. Interesting to watch some of the stuff people are now buying...not me.

Sounds like you want a projector. If you don't want to mount, look into ultra short throw projectors

i love seeing all these huge tv's We'd never get one of these, main reason being space. We have a tv room/office, and it would NEVER fit anything larger than a 55inch tv. But I love seeing these titans, it's hilarious.

I think an 85 inch TV for a livingroom home theater set up would be an awesome experience with out having to have a dedicated theater room with a projector. I would be very satisfied with an 85" i dont know who wouldnt.

I wall mounted my 85 in Sony with the help of a neighbor. I sit 14 feet from the set and at 85 inches it's not too big. My next set will hopefully be near 100 inches.

Comically huge indeed. I hope you get hands on a Sony A90J 77" OLED TV. That seems to be the sweet spot for an OLED TV this year especially with the price lowered to $3500 as of writing of this comment.

I have a projector in my basement on a painted 100"+ screen. I doubt I will replace it with another projector as 85" is big enough and it avoids the compromises of a rear projector.

Can you talk about lag/audio sync? My 635 from last year, with content connected through a receiver (from Apple TV, Shield, Google TV), seems to add around 300 ms of picture lag. It’s super annoying. My theory is that picture processing is introducing that lag, since my previous 2017 Vizio didn’t have any.

I want a 120" to 150", but would require an 8k source at that size I think. 120" max for 4k for me in the room and position it would be in. Not going to spend 100k+ however

I run a 1080P DLP projector at 150", and sit as close as 6 feet, and can't see the pixel structure. The picture is beautiful. You don't need to spend 100k. Even a 4K DLP projector can be purchased for under 2k.
