Go walking with dinosaurs in this 90s sitcom, but with more bite than you may remember.
Dinosaurs is an American family sitcom television series that was originally broadcast on ABC from April 26, 1991, to October 19, 1994. The show, about a family of anthropomorphic dinosaurs (portrayed by puppets), was produced by Michael Jacobs Productions and Jim Henson Television in association with Walt Disney Television. The characters were designed by Henson team member Kirk Thatcher.

Oh my god! I forgot Dinosaurs was a Disney thing! I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED THAT SHOW! Since I was a kid. Now I continue to love it but not just for nostalgia but pretty much how Critic explained, The plot/story CAN get pretty damn real. I didn't notice that as a kid of course but WOW. The "Nuts to War" was actually kinda dramatic! The "New Leaf" Ep, By far my favorite, Was friggin hilarious AND a good message? Their way in goin about being an anti-drug episode was awesome. Pretty much telling us NOT to do these damn things so they don't have to waste time making a lame episode that tells you NOT to do drugs! Love it! That last episode though, I couldn't believe that was how they were gonna end it. I mean I should have seen it coming in some way. I never viewed it as a child but recently I had come across it and WOW that was sad.

I love this show, the finale was SUPER dark considering Disney & Muppets. I remember them telling Baby what Smoo meant. It was a term for the bottom of their feet & since the bottom of their feet are dirty, it's a dirty word. I'm not sure if the main plot of my favorite episode was where Earl was being racist against his new neighbor cause she was a quadruped, but I remember that my favorite part was Roy falling in love with her.

The show really did get deep with relatable issues. It doesn't stop there. There is an episode where the brother eats a thorny creature based on steroids to make him muscular so he can ask out a girl. But then starts experiencing side effects such as growing spikes and having violent mood swings. There was an episode where the teenage daughter is insecure about the size of her tail because all the pretty girls have longer tails, so she goes to purchase a artificial tail to make herself feel better. There was even an episode where the daughter goes to court for treason because of her controversial theory that the world is round and not flat. She makes the agreement do prove she's right by having the police take her the around the world and if she's wrong, she'll be pushed off the edge of it. The commentary in this show was brilliant.

That made the show timeless. Sure, it has some clever commentary throughout, but that finale made the show more relevant and important than any 90s kids comedy about dinosaurs had any right to be. Jim Henson had been doing that since the beginning. All his stuff had dark commentary disguised with cute, some would argue dumb presentation. If anything, I’d take the animatronic characters over all the bad CG today. And adding the clever commentary and the dark ending that seems less out of place as time goes by, it makes for a timeless show.

The best word to describe this show: meta. The whole reason the cast and world were so cookie-cutter, run of the mill was as a commentary on the type of show it was. They were basically saying "you know what kinds of characters and situations to expect from this show, you've seen it a hundred times already." The baby's catch phrase is "I'm the baby, gotta love me!" because that's what's expected from a family sitcom. There's an episode where they talk about relationships and sex and they repeatedly say it's best to wait for "a monogamous relationship, preferably marriage." This show was all about commentary on television programming in general at the time.

You know it was a cheeky nod to both the parents enduring Barney and its similar clone shows, and their fellow actors and puppeteers working in such baby's programming, lol. There's been many anti-Barney tv show parodies, especially in the 90s during Barney's peak. But I think Dinosaurs was the best one because it really highlighted just how much it tortured the parents/how this show was a real tv thing made by real ordinary people, and not just 'a real character' to lash out at in cartoony ways, like the way Animaniacs do. It wasn't just lashing out at how obnoxious and lazy this character was, but also how overly commercialized this 'wholesome' character was treated.

TBH. Dinosaurs is said to have been taken of the air, because they went to overboard with the commentary. And I totally get it. I've bought the complete DVD Box to revisit a little bit of childhood fun and was shocked how relevant a lot of what they are talking about, still is. May it be the episode where Earl watched to much TV and dreamed of a better life, because seing those beautiful and rich people made him feel inadequate (like us today woth a lot of Social Media influencers). Or the Episode were they discredited Robby because he wanted clean energy for all, if I remember correctly.

or hell, the finale itself with showing how the dinosaurs were smart enough to rule the world, but stupid enough to drive themselves into extinction for the sake of their short-lived comfort. there was no happy ending, the dinosaurs froze to death, at least they went out together. if it were any other sitcom at that time, it would have likely ended much happier. but the fact that the finale got so real, and provided a surprisingly relevant and melancholy finale for such goofy-looking characters makes me respect the team who put this together.

Real dinosaurs came in many different sizes, and there were bigger ones on the show who were more or less in proper scale with the humans. Fran’s friend Monica was a sauropod, and she was so big that all you ever saw was her face and neck. Really? In my country they explained it as the lower part of the tail, with it being a dirty bodypart because of it touching the floor remaining. I wonder why they changed that. Also the word was changed to "smarsch" wich sounds like "arsch", our word for "ass". I guess we tend to be less subtle.

I remember an episode being about one of the kids taking Grandma to a cliff to push her off. (I believe it was like.. a tradition to take the elderly and shove them off) I'm pretty sure I had that episode on VHS. I'm rather interested in rewatching the whole series. I know I watched that tape so much as a kid and had the Baby Sinclair stuffed animal that spoke, so I'd be interested to see how I feel about the show as an adult.
@TBustah
@TBustah 4 жыл бұрын
ColdxFeet Yes, that was the third episode, “Hurling Day”. The dinosaurs’ ancestors would throw their elderly off the cliff when they reached a certain age so that they didn’t become a burden on the others or attract predators. To make the job a bit easier to stomach, it was decided that married men would have the privilege of hurling their mother-in-laws, which is why Earl (who had a mutual hatred of Ethyl) was saddled with a job that he was all-too-happy to do. It’s also explained in the episode that this is why Fran’s father isn’t around: he’d already been hurled years earlier. I believe it was also said or implied that Earl’s parents had both already met the same fate.

One of the lines from this show that STILL resonates with me to this day comes from the finale, where Earl confesses why he's so gung-ho about technology and new "advances" (such as the fake fruit thing.) "It's easy to take advantage of nature because...it's always there and technology is always so bright, shiny and new." This quote is what I think of whenever people are obsessed over the tech fads out there; such as the Apple craze or new gaming systems. No matter how "flashy" it looks, technology pales in comparison to the natural world; a world that (like the characters in this show) we are destroying in favor of new tech and oil

I'll never forget the final episode, it's still with me to the day. That was a ballsy move ending the show with the extinction of the dinosaurs in order to get an environmental message out. It honestly messed me up as a kid. Here i was watching a semi adult show with comedy for kids and it ends on the bleakest and most depressing note ever! It's like when ALF ended with him getting taken by the Government!
