Eva Hamer is a Legal Coordinator and Protest Musician for Direct Action Everywhere, otherwise known as DXE. The organization was formed in Berkeley, California in 2013 and it consists of an international network of animal activists. Movement building, non-violent direct action, and open rescue are the core values for DXE. Their motto is "We will change the world for the animals."
In this episode, Eva shares her perspective of what it is like being an animal activist and participating in open rescues, which one of them was of her Beagle, Anna, that she rescued from a lab testing facility for cosmetics. Eva also talks about the work that she is doing as a Legal Coordinator for DXE and some of the felony court cases that many animal activists are being charged with.

Great talking with you! Today I learned that this video is in evidence in the case against me in Wisconsin, for rescuing dogs from a puppy mill that supplies dog experimenters. (Soon this comment will be, too. We don't know who the prosecutor is yet, but I'll address them anyway, hi! I know you're a kind person who wants to keep order in the world. I also value order! I'm so grateful for how laws and customs let our society work so much better than if every little thing needed to be negotiated individually. But as you review this case I think you'll find our predicament- the rules are letting incredibly cruel things happen to individuals who don't deserve it. You could push for me to go to prison, and you might be successful. The court might decide that we did something so abhorrent that we need to be put into a cage, ourselves. Of course I knew about that possibility when I spoke on this show and posted on social media. And I also believe in you, as people, the prosecutor, judge, and jury. I think there's a part of you that knows we did the right thing. The legal system relies on your humanity and your understanding of nuance, and you all have the power to vote your conscious on this one. I wish you the best regardless. ) Your audience is larger than you know! Keep fighting the good fight.

I see most of your commenters criticize DxE and their methods. What would you suggest, since NO attention would be brought to these issues without groups who ACT!!! Some of you may not feel strongly enough, don't have the guts or are afraid you may be derided by your "Friends" for taking a principled stand. If you don't approve, at the least, get out of the way. You're just not serious. I support DxE with a small donation monthly. Proudly!!!

Thanks for your support of one facet of activism. Every vegan wants to do what dxe does but it harms the movement because; it only saves single animals, it causes negative backlash against vegans, and in popular opinion there is no distinction between a dxe vegan and a chill vegan so we all appear to be an "in your face" activist, which is something that you are not required to be in order to be convincing. Example: Earthling Ed. If you save an animal you have saved an animal, if you turn someone vegan that saves hundreds of animals. There are different types of vegans, some see the bigger picture while others are short term thinkers. Peace!

I respect these people's dedication to animal freedom and their zeal for veganism, a totally valid term, IMO, but Ms. Hamer has her work cut out for her, because, as she mentions, traditional DXE tactics are unlawful in many places. I am old enough to remember the animal liberation movements of yore, that resulted in people getting imprisoned and more aggressive an-ag laws being legislated--this is happening to the well-meaning but naïve trespassers in Australia currently--such that my generation of vegans must work to counter the perception of veganism as menacing _along with countering persistent carnist thinking._ Rescuing individual animals helps those individual animals, but it does not cause society to shift in a more vegan direction. I am glad that DXE are broadening their tactics and using legal work to--if I am inferring this correctly--alter the way agricultural and clinical animals are perceived _legally,_ because this should be the long-term goal. Conan how is rescuing animals from criminal animal cruelty and taking them to the vet for treatment considered "terrorism"?

I respect your valiant efforts though my guess is that for every action DXE has taken it has reinforced more people to stay carnist rather than turned any vegan. By a factor of at least 40 to 1. I dunno about anyone else but I find the tactics of DXE to be embarrassing and distance myself from them whenever mentioned. I try to be a steward of what i am doing and how awesome it feels rather than what other people are doing and how much it sucks.

Same here. I'm not gonna bash dxe bc they have their tactics pertaining to NVDA (nonviolent direct action). I do that as well but not on a daily basis. I have my way of promoting such a tactic. One way will work for some and may not work for others, sure. But, at the end of the day, we all are doing our part to make a statement in the name of animal rights and I admire those who are taking nonviolent action as well as introducing people to veganism as more that some diet. I'm proud of you for doing your thing. I agree dxe's tactics are a bit much, but, like I said, we all have our way of taking action for animals, who are the focal point of taking said NVDA. I'm with you on that, so thank you for doing your part! 💜✌️🌱

What is the point of farmed animal sanctuaries, if they are not open to the public and are actively promoting veganism?

A legal opinion is just an opinion. What counts is the Court's verdict. At some point the system will respond by sending activists to prison.

I cannot understand how someone who is vegan which is supposed to be a moral standpoint. Of the value of animals lyves and then you can call it a club? It's no Club. I think what she says downplays the term of vegan. It's a moral issue. Nothing more and most certainly nothing less! It's about humans? It's about the animals!

I would argue it's about changing the behavior of HUMANS for the animals, since in case you haven't noticed humans are the CAUSE of animal suffering. You willfully miss the point in order to criticize.
