Let's drive our 1 ton Land Rover Discovery 2! In this video we polish out a lot of our swap problems and discover a few more. This is the first of many test runs that we will have in the Discovery but I wish we could have done more in this episode. However there will be lots of opportunity to see it driving in the coming weeks! Until then enjoy the last few videos of our 1 ton axle swap!

I also run progressive shock bumpers from Eibach. They definitely work!! My fox shocks use red loctite for the lower mount. You have to put the shaft in a soft vice and heat the end with a torch to loosen the loctite. Awesome to see it moving!

Nate. I've enjoyed the series. When you swap your master cylinder please white board the math behind the relationship between brake piston and master piston in that you trade volume for pressure. Too many people think a bigger master cylinder will give increased braking, but in fact you get less pedal travel and less clamping force with stock brakes.

I worked over 25 years in the power generation business. I supervised the overhaul of turbines and generators for about every major electric company. there are several sensors similar to the ABS sensors on cars. I don't know if they operate on the same principle as the automotive sensors. We would set the turbine and generator sensors that monitored vibration, rotor speed (RPM) and rotor position at 10 mV Distance from the tone ring using a Fluke meter. This worked out to between 0.030" and 0.040". Setting the ABS sensors at 0.003" may be way too close. Other than that, great build on the Disco. Love your fab content.

Nice job on that axles swamp!!!! here in Portugal on that kind of swamp, usually they change the gearbox using a Nissan or a Toyota to correct the angle of the rear transmission. For the front bump stop, there are a kit that use to put dual shock, you could build the brackets but instead of using the shock, you use a hydraulic bump stop! :)

That ROVER looks SICK!! I really like your thought process on everything and how meticulous you are with every part of your build! Thanks for the response! I’m looking at transmission and t-case options. I do have the HP Dana 30. For now I will be staying at the 35” tire range. As I get more wheeling trips in I will look at upgrading sizes and front axle.

Great build . Personally my thoughts , as I was thinking to myself watching you as your first video with the Dana 60 swap , was I would go with either the stock ‘case and build the axles accordingly OR what I did many years ago... Dana 300 with the twin stick conversion. I used a plate made by a company in New Zealand . Strong, extremely reliable and plentiful with parts if need be . Mine still runs and the current owner still cruises with it, across country. Good luck !👍🏼

This is going to be a bit of random rover knoledge but most US speck rovers, came with a 1.2:1 high range output, 1.4:1 in deisel models, with the 3.4:1 low range. Also on the random things, the 1ton defenders ran a salisbury/sterling 1ton with right hand drop housing.

Just my 2 cents concerning the brackets for the Rear Wheel Speed Sensors: A rock is gonna get in there and break off the sensor and maybe a tooth as well. Seems like there's a good reason factory fittings are always fully enclosed, including the toothed ring. The angle iron seems like it'll do a good job of "proof of concept", but I'd recommend a nice machined aluminum piece to attach to the hub that has a hole machined into it for the sensor.

Why would you think drive shafts we going to be a problem. It's not in a perfect plan view straight line but will be offset in it's custom axis and the double cardan joints will work the same either way. Congrats on the milestone Nate, keep em coming.

My skepticism is from past experience. I've played this game before lol most of the time I have won but there is an instance in which i lost. They didn't vibrate to bad but im hoping that with some tuning I can eliminate any potential issues and keep the vibes to a minimum 👍

The lt230 transfer on your disco is 1.2:1 ratio. The next is 1.4:1 that comes in defenders. Alternatively.. Ashcroft transmissions in the UK have multiple other options. Including close to 1:1. Also, these transfer cases are pretty strong actually. Plenty of Ls swapped defenders around with the factory transfer case. The diffs are the weakest link in a landrover. And you’ve fixed that 👌 Im still in the process Otherwise. Cheers for another video mate 💪 Later 🤙

Plan D: use rear drive shaft CV joints, like all new JK wranglers do. They are a slip style drive shaft as well. This was the factory solution for having such short drive shafts, and the problems created by having U joints in such a drive short drive shaft. CV joints and double cordons are not the same.
@DirtLifestyle
@DirtLifestyle 3 жыл бұрын
A cardan joint is a CV joint. Because of the way it's sealed it doesn't need a boot. The cv joint typically found on an axle shaft is a different type vs the cardan joint on a driveshaft but both are definitely cv joints.

Looks awesome Nate. Love the stance. Consider building a twin tyre carrier for the rear, one swing out arm that can carry a tyre or fuel/gear (to optimise the space). Also, have you considered incorporating a small air or water tank into the rear bar? There’s typically lots of unused space behind that plate etc..
