I can see Lt.Dan waiting patiently and drumming his fingers on the deck, praying someone will soon begin finishing the job started Loooong Ago!....LoL Those bushings and pins would go in soo much easier if they were put in a freezer overnight. Just a thought.

You guys handled that nicely. Only detailed thing I would have done differently is I would have coated the bushings with a smear of regular grease before driving them in. These bushings were thick walled enough (and steel) to stand up to the beating you gave them without distorting, but less robust (or bronze) bushings could have suffered some distortion. A little bit of lubrication before driving home is always a good thing.

I wonder if placing the bushings in the freezer overnight would make the insertion easier. I watched another KZfaqr use liquid nitrogen to shrink some bushings for a D11 dozer to easily insert them.

I would doubt any of the manufactures use stick anywhere, it's a production setting. The use of proper technique will yield as strong as or stronger welds with mig. They use a 71M outershield wire, not to be confused with intershield wire, but does produce a slag covering. Also the shielding gas is a 75/25 CO2/Argon or even a straight 100% CO2, the CO2 makes it dig deep. Get Arron a roll of the 71M wire to try, it goes down like butter, he'll love it. Nice fix, hope it holds up for you guys.
@jordandavid1671
@jordandavid1671 3 жыл бұрын
Look up dual shield welding wire. It gets you into spray transfer with conventional argon/CO2 gas. And can be welding in all positions except down. It's super fast travel speed and amazing penetration... If your wire welder can go up to 28 to 34 Volts you can hit about 350 amps. It's my favorite wire for anything 1/2-1 inch plate. Try it out and you'll become a believer in mig welding is better for everything when you're out of the wind. Good luck.

Mig welding can as strong as stick welding, it depends on the person running the welder and the preperation that went into the metal before the weld. Aaron is correct about them not beveling it and that's why it failed.

That pin driver is so much safer than a straight bar. Back in ‘85 I was working in a spring shop for my Highschool co-op class and we did a lot of walking beam suspension bushing replacements. One time the owner was swinging the sledgehammer and I was holding the bar to drive some pins out keeping my eyes on the bar to keep it on the pin. He glanced off the end of the bar with a swing and I felt the sledgehammer go through my hair. It freaked the owner out a lot, most likely because he saw it when I only felt it. Your pin driver keeps the other person well out of striking distance.

Mister Mike, A veritable PLDTHERA of congratulatory wishes for just a super vlog! Wow; you pretty much covered all the bases possible except for enlisting Mrs. DP and Miss M., any dogs on the homestead or Mr. Jerry in the cab. To me the investigation you did and explained so well was just excellent, and showing just what a continuous BITE IN THE BUTT being the owner/operator of a small to medium business with machinery can be when stuff is down with problems hiding more problems and parts are days away. This should be a mandatory class for anyone In blind rapture of being a sole owner intent of surviving in the real world. Great work, great editing and a big thanks for taking time you didn't have while sweltering to content The dots and demonstrate that guys like you have Goya REALLY WANT TO, even on weekends and in crap weather. You rock.

I have seen this happen from time to time on larger machines. 349 cat had this happen. It had a 4 yard bucket on it and had too much slop between stick and coupler. So it would slide hammer the coupler when swinging with a fully heaped bucket. Eventually kept beating the coupler and breaking the welds like yours. Good luck! And keep up the good work.

Your videos are really entertaining. I enjoy watching them more the TV, I've never worked on Heavy equipment, but I did work on jet engines and aircraft. When we were rebuilding an engine and we had bushings to install we would put them in the freezer for a few hours and they were much easier to install . Also when you are pulling a busing if you wold heat up the metal around the outside of the bushing it will come out a lot easier instead of heating up the bushing it self.
