I think every parish should have a collection for unwanted religious items. A small display area should be set up in every church with a donation box beside it. Not only do you now have a locally based organization to deal with this problem, you also eradicate the "secular clientele" issue

Thank you Fr Brendan, you are the first priest I have heard address this. When I sit in churches and see the beauty of the marble altars and intricate mosaic work to honour God, think of the crafts people who fashioned it all, so sad to think that many may be closed and turned into ? God only knows.

THANK YOU, Father for addressing this. What a blessing a sacramental is to increase our devotion with faith and move our hearts to holiness! Retire them reverently, lovingly, and completely. I have broken rosaries (jeweler fixed and broke again), statues, pictures and have not known what to do with them. I would have buried them intact so the “bury the bits” suggestion was welcome. It is a serious issue. I appreciate your teaching. I pray for you every day.

This is so important. Only yesterday I rescued a number of beautiful holymedals and rosaries from a charity shop. I do this often. I found an altar cross in such a shop a few years ago. My mother passed on her relics and medals to me. I wonder if burial with these items is a good thing to do, when my time comes.

Thanks for sharing the truth on this very informative people need to discern on who they pass on the relics...i have seen them threw in the corner of a room....even forgotten about...by very holy people that the all the accredited relics seem to be given to! It does need thought like you say .

Thank you Fr Brendan & also for your time at Killybegs retreat. May I suggest also any religious items can be donated to St Joseph's Cloak Charity Shop in Knock. May I ask 1 question..different Church's around Ireland are in recent times holding concerts which means the Holy Eucharist has to be taken out..what is your opinion on these concerts coming up to Christmas & should we Catholics support such concerts..God Bless, Daniel 🙏

Yes I am also extremely curious to know about it. Our church has had commercial events..not for a charity even ..in our church..I'm deeply conflicted and troubled .. saddened 😢

Just to say unwanted Rosary Beads can be sent to the Missions. You could ask a Missionary Order for the address to where to send them.

6:37 6:37 6:40 we have a table were alll catholic items are regifted. I pick up a few then reposition under the virgin mary statue. Then keep the site clean and dusted .

Around here the Italians bury a statue of St. Joseph upside down in the yard when they want to sell a house, and he remains there until they sell, I suppose. Also, there were some other statues that got tortured until somebody got a spouse, maybe it was St. Anthony? I think they hung him upsiside down in a closet? Maybe. I'm not Italian, I am entirely of Irish ancestry, but I must say, I may have made a threat or two to a saint here or there to get something. I once told my guardian angel maybe I'll have him clean toilets once I get to eternity if he didn't come across. As I recall, I think I threatened not to pray for my mother once she died if she didn't shape up. You can just stay in purgatory! My mother wants like 100 masses said for her after she dies, I think she may have put it in her will. Personally, I enjoy the humor of it all. It is about the humor for me.

All the burying statues is very superstitious and borders on occult practices. The faithful should steer clear of these types of practices

Shameful for any church items to end up in a pub how on earth could that happen. Thanks for your advise about disgarding holy items. Holy blessed items can be used in satanic rituals.

Recently I lost both my parents and the amount of religious items I found in the house is unreal is it ok to burn stuff if you can't find homes for them like holy pictures old rosary beads

Distribute them to friends. Failing that, keep what you can (say one of each) and burn the rest

I can see it helping to draw back those far astray from the practice of our faith, and I can see it furthering the divide in those nursing misperceived grievances against the faith, but either way it's not a practice to be encouraged - there's more than enough casual sacrilege in the world

in auckland in the 70s at st Patrick's cathedral the bishop took a buldozer and busted the high altar sending the lot to the tip. There is a video of it.

I use just a little exorcize salt in my cooking. Sometimes the leftovers go in the disposal sink. I never thought twice about it. I don't want to be scrupulous or disrespectful. I'm not sure about this?. I always thank God for His sacramentals. Any thoughts?

You didn't explain why this is so important. It makes it seem like these objects are like idols. They're not the sacred host, after all.

If an object is blessed, it is set aside for sacred use. It is specifically made, blessed, and used to enhance our journey of faith in God, and therefore should be treated with reverence. Treating these items with respect and reverence (and letting others witness this respect) teaches us about the manner in which we should approach truly holy things, such as the Eucharist. If things minor are important, how much more important are the mysteries in which we participate.

A statue is an image of your loved one just as a photograph of your family is... would you leave your childrens pictures out in a slug ridden Garden. The same applies to the crucified Christ your Saviour who is thought so little of that he is left out in All weather to be pooped on by birds and covered in spiders webs
