It also helps that in the anime, the card game is canonical ancient magic that has simply been rediscovered and rebranded as a card game. That is why world-destroying calamities can be stopped by it, they are literally invoking magic but instead of using magic words and wands, they are using magic card-shaped talismans.

But Cyber Dragon is an effect monster and it's effect reads: ***insert text*** So that means it is an effect being activated, riiiiiiight? This is something that some new players will say and it kind of feels like rulesharking when explaining to them that there is a : after that part so it is not an activated effect. This is the type of stuff that should be included in rulebooks that come with starter/structure decks. A good way to look at it (although it doesn't help understand WHY it works like this) is with Dimension Barrier. If your opponent has two level 4s on the field and you have a set D-Barrier you have to pre-emptively fire the Barrier because you will not be able to respond to the XYZ summon. Obviously the same for Synchros. However things like Fusion and Ritual summons you can activate it in response to the card or effect that conducts the summon.

Everytime someone asks what an inherent summon is, i always try my best. The easiest and simplest way i found is by citing Game Mechanics, then card text that says, in Cyber Dragon's case "You can." as in You, the player, can. So Synchro Summoning, Xyz Summoning, Flip Summoning, Normal Summons and Pendulum Summons are Game Mechanics that the player takes. In Cyber Dragon's case, the card gives, you, the player, the ability to summon it, it doesn't summon itself. The same for Gorz, Emissary of Darkness. This is why i hate when people say a card "Special Summon's itself." it doesn't in most cases, the card gives the PLAYER the ability to special summon it by satisfying some sort of condition because of the text "YOU can." as in you, the player. Non-Inherent Summons are summons that are caused by another card's effect resolution(and a few other cases). So anything that says "Special Summon *insert generic text here*" the key is that it starts it's text with "Special Summon" and may or may not have Costs or Conditions that you need to satisfy before Resolution but never says "You Can." because your not summoning, the card effect is.

A built in special summon method without activating card effects. Also it happens in an open game state/not part of chains resolving You cant strike a poly, because in order to negate effect of poly, you have to negate the card itself, solemn strike only negates summon, not negating card effects/activation

I like to break it down like: "Inherent" summon: Read how the card summons itself. If there's no colon showing it's an activated effect (including synchro, xyz, pendulum, and link), then nothing needs to resolve so you can use Strike to negate the summon. You can also Strike an effect like I:P Masquarena if she's chain link 1 because the link summon happens after the chain has resolved, so now the link summon is happening outside of that window. Resolved card effect summon: You can't use an effect to negate a summon if it *will* happen because of a card effect that was just activated (look for the colon!), because it's just a card effect at this point. And you can't negate it *after* it resolves because you can't negate an effect that has already happened. But you can still respond to the resulting summon with Bottomless Trap Hole. PSCT is awesome, but Konami needs to publish "negate a summon vs. activated card effect to summon" ruling in the official rulebook. And also include that if the summon negation effect is Spell Speed 2 (e.g., Steelswarm Roach), you can't attempt to use a quick effect of the monster that is attempting to be summoned to attempt to negate that effect (e.g., Steelswarm Roach vs. Infernoid Devyaty; you can't tribute a monster to negate the activation of and banish Steelswarm Roach with the Infernoid Devyaty you are summoning in response to Steelswarm Roach activating its effect to negate the summon because Devyaty is technically not yet on the field). Maybe include Jinzo, Denko Sekka, and Apoqliphort Towers vs. Solemn Warning in there, as well. The current rulebook and official TGI rulings are really inadequate for a game that can have this many *common* interactions that might not make sense to a new/returning player. /endparallelrant

I stopped at about 1:45, I remember running into this with a different card, grand horn of heaven, basically, polymerization is a card that special summons another card but cyber dragon and other cards like xyz can just summon themselves, their ability just allows them to. There is no text for when a card or effect would special summon a monster... so grand horn of heaven can't stop other summons.(now to continue watching) Edit: Yep, that, it is complicated, but as long as you figure out the ; and the card that causes the special summon it should be fine.

Duel Links has a deck that abuses inherent summons: Jack Atlas with Resonators. Demon's Resonance is a skill that allows the player to reveal a card, then add a different card to their hand, but they can't activate the effect of the added card. If you have a Crimson Resonator in your hand, and you add a Wandering King Wildwind, you can special summon the Crimson Resonator by its own effect as normal, and then special summon the Wildwind. If instead you added a Crimson Resonator to your hand, you wouldn't be able to special summon it, because Crimson Resonator has no Special Summon, only an effect you can activate which special summons it, and due to the skill you can't activate it. Of these two, Wandering King Wildwind is the one with an inherent special summon.

Inherent summon (aka Inherent special summon): The summon of a monster that is performed when you meet the summoning conditions/requirements. It does not start a chain. How I explain it is that there are two types of summons: Effect Summon; summoning through an effect AND Inherent Summon; summoning without an effect. You can tell the difference when you look at the card text, and if the summoning text has a semi-colon ( ; ) then its an effect summon. If not its an inherent summon. If you use an effect summon you must activate it as an effect which lets you or your opponent chain to it. But if its an inherent summon you can just summon it to the field like an extra deck monster.

Simplest explanation for me. Think of how you resolve effects in a Chain. Is the summon a part of resolving an effect? If not, then it's inherent. You're not activating a card to summon. You just play it. And some cards can be played from Deck, GY, Extra Deck, Banished. Overall, if you understand exactly how Activated Effects work, activation and all, that will help. All you really need to do is understand Activated Effects, and Chain Resolution.

The really simple explanation to give is this. "You cannot activate a card effect to negate a summon, while a chain is activate". The more in depth, but still relatively simple answer to give is this. "At the point of activating a card effect that special summons, a special summon is not being performed. Therefore Solemn Strike cannot respond. It also cannot activate when the monster is special summoned as the chain is resolving, because cards cannot be activated as a chain is resolving. By the time the monster is successfully special summoned, the game state is no longer at the point of 'WHEN' a monster 'WOULD BE' special summoned. So again, it cannot activate at this time."

The thing is, strike is not always negating the summon. Sometimes it's negating the monster effect that is making the summon happen, and this distinction is not clearly addressed in this video. The difference is that the would be summoned monster goes to the GY if the summon is negated, but it doesn't go to the GY if the summoning effect is negated.

When I read it's not an effect that I'd declare, just a if this condition is met. This is effect. With the wiki stating WRM has a continous-like effect. Since it is on feild and has it's effect's condition met. Have yet to get a straight consistent answer on it from yes it activates due to colon to it doesn't activate it's a continuous effect that you can summon at start of the BP to the conditions negate the effect not activate it.

I need help with this So u can not solemn strike a poly/neos/red eyes/fusion bc it starts a chain bc the chain resolves and bc its not a summon but instead a chain resolving meaning you sort of in a sense “mis time”? Right? Bc if u try to strike after its too late and if you strike before then its too early? Another question i had was what about summons like red eyes and blue eyes alternative can u strike those? What about BLS and Chaos Sorcerer? Can you strike those? And even if u cant strike these cards you could still torrential right? But torrential wouldnt work on say a dragoon, monsters who cant be destroyed or r unaffected, yes? Mainly trying to figure out how you can decipher an inherent summon from something like a cyber dragon compared to a poly/bls/red/blue alternative dragon like what are those? Recently learned about gemini summoning too which I thought was interesting

I remember when I was returning to this game after 15 years and someone tried to tell me that same thing about not being able to solemn strike a fusion card because it’s not an inherent summon. After asking all five people around us watching the duel what an inherent summon is, no one could effectively answer that and then seemed to get mad at ME because I had even asked at all. I ended up scooping and leaving because I don’t want to play with people who don’t understand what the hell the rules are and want me to feel stupid for asking questions. I felt like they all just wanted to fuck with me because I didn’t really understand the rules that well. If it wasn’t for other people who are patient with players like me and understand the complexity of this game, then I would’ve stopped playing a while ago. TL;DR: If summon = part of activated effect or happens during effect resolution: **NO** strike. If summon =/= part of activated effect **YES** strike. This includes summon mechanics like Synchro summoning, Link summoning and XYZ summoning because those are not activated effects. If ***:*** is after the effect that summons it is ***not*** counted as an activated effect but more like a summon mechanic. I assume you are saying "no, you cannot Strike" and then "yes, you can Strike". Then yes. As long as the Special Summon occurs outside of a chain resolving, you can Solemn Strike it. That covers all of the possibilities. However, colons indicate that there is an ACTIVATION CONDITION, so no, it IS an activated effect there. Colons and semi-colons BOTH indicate an activated effect. Colons are placed after the activation condition, semi-colons are placed after the activation cost.

@thk573
@thk573 2 жыл бұрын
You cannot. While the wording is similar, there is a key difference in the text of Analyzer. "If only your opponent controls a monster: You can Special Summon this card from your hand." ^The colon in Analyzer's text here indicates that it is an activated effect. Which means that the summon happens during the resolution of a card effect. So if you have already OK'd the Analyzer to resolve, it will successfully special summon itself provided that nothing earlier in the chain negates the effect. Now, because this IS an activated effect however. You ARE allowed to Strike it. But ONLY if you do so to negate the activation of Analyzer's effect before the chain begins to resolve. Meanwhile Cyber Dragon's text shows the following. "If only your opponent controls a monster, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand)." ^See how there's no colon or semicolon in the card text? That means that this is not an activated effect and happens outside of a card effect resolving. Much like a Synchro summon, XYZ summon or Link summon. This is why you are allowed to activate Solemn Strike to negate the special summon of Cyber Dragon.

"Inherent" summons summon by gamemechanics, the card is allowing YOU to do something. The player is using the right given to him by card text or game mechanic to perform the summon. You can summon cyber dragon straight from hand because it allows you to do so. You can xyz summon using 2 lv4 monsters because you are allowed to do so by the game mechanics. IP Masquerena allows you to perform a link summon after her effect resolves. Its all actions taken by the player at a time where no chain is happening.
@JABRIEL251
@JABRIEL251 2 жыл бұрын
@@Schmaglow It does though, because it is using its own activated EFFECT. It is still using an effect to summon itself. It's not just plopping itself on the field, it is using an activated effect to do so. To expound (I didn't want to, so I kept it simple). The question is what is summoning it? When I said "Is it summoning itself or is an effect summoning it", I meant is an activated effect summoning it or is it summoning itself(basically in a way similar to links or synchros, etc). So what I'm getting from this is that Inherent Summons are Normal Summons or Special Summons that are not caused by Activated effects (including Synchro, Xyz, Link, and I think Contact Fusion?). These Summons can always be responded to because they can never happen as the result of an Activated effect, where as Summons caused by Activated effects can only be responded to if said effect is CL1 *and* the Summon happens after resolution rather than in the middle of resolution.

I get it but it's not really too hard to be honest. If you special WITHOUT a cain (i.e. Cyber Dragon) you can strike it. If it special summons WITH a chain you can NOT strike it (i.e. Polymerization, you have to negate this with Solemn Judgment for example). If a card has an activated effect that starts a chain, you can not strike it (unless its a monster effect of course), because then you are negating the effect, and not the summon.
@TheKastellan
@TheKastellan 2 жыл бұрын
I think the guy might of missed the point....basically (Might be wrong actually). "Inherent" summon is when the summon itself is seen as its own 'mechanic' instead of effect. So Cyberdragon's "effect" is to give itself the 'Mechanic' to special summon when conditions are meant. You chain to these as if they were a mechanic of the game. Like normal summons, or synchro summons etc. Compare to Polymerisation which is an ACTIVE effect in order to use a 'Mechanic' (Fusion Sumoning) to summon a monster when it resolves. The important part is whilst any chain is resolving, no effects can be chained. In this case you chain to these as if they are an effect, more specifically any effect "starts its own chain". More inherent summons for context are like photon thrasher, who gives itself the 'Mechanic' that if you have no monsters you can special summon itself. Or basically all Contact Fusions, which are monsters giving themselves the mechanic to fusion summon via tributing. (I actually checked the wiki whilst writing this and they name it "Built-In Summons" which actually explains itself much better than "Inherent".)
@NARFNra
@NARFNra 2 жыл бұрын
The simplest way to put it is that effects like Steelswarm Roach and Solemn Strike can't "see" what happens inside an Effect. Polymerization is a Card Effect that happens to Special Summon a monster, but that Special Summon happens "inside" the effect. For instance, let's say you activate "Unexpected Dai" "If you control no monsters: Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower Normal Monster from the Deck." You can't respond to this with Solemn Strike... "When a monster(s) would be Special Summoned, OR a monster effect is activated" But you CAN respond to this with Ash Blossom. "When a card or effect is activated that includes any of these effects (Quick Effect): You can discard this card; negate that effect. ● Add a card from the Deck to the hand. ● Special Summon from the Deck. ● Send a card from the Deck to the GY." The reason is that Solemn Strike only responds to a Special Summon actually occurring, but Ash Blossom responds to an effect being activated that would have a Special Summon in the middle of it, see? Ash Blossom specifically calls out effects in a way that Solemn Strike doesn't. So how can you tell whether a Special Summon is an effect or not? With Problem-Solving Card Text, the answer is colons. Cyber Dragon - "If only your opponent controls a monster, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand)." There's no colon, so Cyber Dragon occurs without using an Effect, there's no Chain Link. Thus, Steelswarm Roach and Solemn Strike can negate this. Adamancipator Analyzer - "If only your opponent controls a monster: You can Special Summon this card from your hand. " There's a colon, so this is an Activated Effect in your hand that occurs as a Chain Link. You can't negate this as a Summon, but you CAN negate this with something that negates Monster Effects like Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon. (Solemn Strike can negate this, but only because it's a Monster Effect, not because it's a Special Summon) There's a weirder case, though, that he brings up. If you've ever seen effects phrased like this... IP Masquerena - "During your opponent's Main Phase, you can (Quick Effect): Immediately after this effect resolves, Link Summon 1 Link Monster using materials you control..." Ultimate Offering - "During your Main Phase or your opponent's Battle Phase: You can pay 500 Life Points; immediately after this effect resolves, Normal Summon/Set 1 monster." This effect specifies "immediately after this effect resolves". Why? Because this means the Summon occurs OUTSIDE the Effect resolving or its Chain Link. So if this happens as the last thing in a Chain (that is, Chain Link 1), then this is a Summon that Solemn Strike and Steelwarm Roach can see and react to normally. That's why it specifically says that the Special Summon is occurring after the effect, and not during it. (If this effect is Chain Link 2 or higher, it doesn't work because you can't interrupt a Chain and there's another effect that's going to resolve after that, so even though Roach can theoretically see it it can't do anything.) A weird thing to keep in mind though is that you can Solemn Warning Masquerena while it's activating. "When a monster(s) would be Summoned, OR when a Spell/Trap Card, or monster effect, is activated that includes an effect that Special Summons a monster(s): Pay 2000 LP; negate the Summon or activation, and if you do, destroy it." Why? Because why the Summon doesn't occur INSIDE the effect, it's still technically the effect that creates the Summon afterwards. So Solemn Warning can see that because it specifically looks for that, whereas Roach and Strike can't "see" the summons inside the effects. And just for fun, here's a silly one: Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon - "Must first be Special Summoned (from your Deck) by Tributing "Red-Eyes B. Dragon" equipped with "Metalmorph". " This isn't an effect, it's just a Summoning Condition. So you CANNOT negate this with Ash Blossom. But you CAN Solemn Strike it, just like Cyber Dragon. Does that make sense at all?
@shiroshnur
@shiroshnur 2 жыл бұрын
The way I see it is: I'm not summoning a monster, the card I activated is summoning a monster. If I play Poly or a ritual spell, the card is activated. At this point, before a monster hits the field, you have a chance to respond to the spell card. If there is no response, the spell will resolve. The spell does not finish resolving until the summon is complete. You cannot activate any other cards while card effects are resolving. Once the spell has completed resolving, the spell goes to the graveyard and the chain ends. The new monster on the field was summoned at some point when other card effects could not be activated. I think it's somewhat similar to the idea of missing timing with some fundamental differences.
@timaeus22222

The easiest way that I explain it is almost like what is in the video. "Inherent" = the Summon occurs outside of a Chain Link (which includes "immediately after this effect resolves", since that places the Summon after the chain resolves, not during). Two kinds of summons that occur outside of a Chain Link: 1. You SLAP the monster onto the field as the only action involved when attempting to Summon, but the monster is not considered on the field yet, then your opponent is allowed to chain something that states "when a Monster would be Summoned" to negate the Summon of the monster that would be slapped onto the field. 2. You perform such a Summon AFTER RESOLUTION of an effect on Chain Link 1 which stated "immediately after this effect resolves". In that case, the opponent is allowed to chain something that states "when a Monster would be Summoned" to negate the Summon of the monster that would appear on the field due to this effect. This is outside of a Chain Link because the effect PREPARED for the Summon, then resolved already, THEN you do the Summon where you SLAP the monster onto the field.
