Here's a simple, inexpensive way to make your own custom ergonomic crochet hooks! Because the handles are made from polymer clay, they can be made into the perfect shape and style for your hands.
For more information on this project, including supplies, color blends, cost, & more, see the full blog post here:

UPDATE: I have found that the DecoArt gloss glaze I used does not work well as a surface coating for polymer clay crochet hooks. I have since removed the original glaze, and replaced it with Fimo Gloss Varnish. See how I did it here:

Its also important to condition your clay thoroughly. So that all the plasticizers are evenly mixed throughout. You do this by kneading. Otherwise it make crack or break easily.

How can anyone give this a thumbs down? Well explained thanks plus for storage you could make. A stroform stand by cutting a strip and surrounding it with say foam board or something

Thank you for this tutorial! I have a full set of Odyssey hooks in black that I’ve loved for years. Furls has now released the Odysseys in turquoise (which is my signature color), but I can’t afford and refuse to buy a whole new set just because I love the color. LOL. I’ve ended up with WAY more crochet hooks than anyone would ever need due to inheriting both of my grandmothers’ stashes. So, I see a shiny new set of custom made turquoise ergonomic handled crochet hooks in my very near future. I may experiment with some mica powder to get some extra shimmer. 😍😍😍

This was exactly what I needed. My Furls odyssey broke and I loved it. I had clay from a previous hobby so I didn’t do anything as fancy as yours but it fits my hand and I got to use the Furls top part.

Thanks so much for sharing! I love to crochet but as the RA progresses, it makes it increasingly difficult. I have tried Odyssey hooks. I've sent my preferred hooks to people that could do custom handles & they were great. Then my hands started locking up again & I suddenly needed thinner handles. It becomes costly, having to replace the already custom handles again. I actually bought some polymer clay I loved the look of, but I tend to be a bit OCD & am easily intimidated without a lot of clear directions that I can follow, step-by-step. Lucky for me my husband is an electrician & likes to tinker with the things people junk, like a toaster oven that we haven't had use for yet. And my son was into stop motion for years, using a lot of clay for his films. His clay tools are now packed away, waiting to be needed. So yes! Thank you for the ample directions. I feel pretty confident at this point & can't wait to try out making my own handles!

There's a store on Etsy - Too Shay Crochet - that does custom handles on hooks. They're thicker with a lot of different styles, but they're lightweight & way more affordable than the hooks they compare to. I have a similar problem with my hands, and crochet is what I do to feel productive when I am stuck in bed. You likely know how it is though, not able to spend a ton on hooks that help with the pain & cramping. The hooks I've gotten so far have helped more than the Furls hook I tried. There's a variation of thickness, regular, medium, and slimline. And the design of thickness, or where the handle stops depending on how you hold your hook- you have lots of options. If your husband finds it too trying to manage clay (I tried it & without experience, it was more difficult than it appears on these videos, as well as more expensive when you're first starting & have to buy everything for the first time) you might check the hooks at TooShay on Etsy. You can also do customized orders. I get my handles to come higher toward the hook, where some prefer shorter that shows the midhook measurements. My clay attempts never held a smooth shape. I guess I just don't have the patience or a good grasp of clay work enough to find the clay that works best for my purposes. I'd easily end up spending way more on supplies to test, beyond the cost of a custom hook from TooShay. I hope -whatever you choose- that things get better for you. I'm sorry you're suffering limitations. I know it's hard, much harder than most people know or consider. God bless you & be with you.

BRAVO!!!!! You have done an AMAZINGLY COMPREHENSIVE TUTE!! STELLER, I'm not joking in the slightest. I am into details. One it cuts cost, waste & the GRR syndrome! Generally when u seek info in a tute you have to do a gaggle of run throughs. There always seems to be crucial info missing at one step or another. However, you not only got the basics, the pertinent info for the layers of each process and the visual toboot! like I said, BRAVO!! I'd love to give this a try with low investment.. you have given multiple ways to do that. I have sensitive skin from health issues anf tho I need a grip for Arthritis issues I react to the rubber. I'd thought about buying something from someone but worry as to the thickness.. being to much, plus a strict budget adds to any concerns. Now I might be able to try a hook or two, aybe this new yr all because I have ALL THE PERTINENT INFO IN 1 STOP..OHH WHAT A STRESS BUSTER! NOT WASTING hr upon hr searching it all out. YOU'VE BLESSED ME~~ THANK YOU, MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A WONDERFULLY JOYOUS NEW YEAR TO YOU! OH, U CERTAINLY HAVE A NEW SUBBY! 8* }

Thanks so much, Kathleen! I'm so glad it was helpful to you! If you have sensitive skin, I would highly recommend the finger gloves I used (link in the written tutorial / blog post, see description box). If you think you may be sensitive to any of the substances in the clay, the finger gloves will minimize the clay's contact with your skin. When wearing them, I mostly touch the clay with the gloves, and seldom need to use the palms of my hands. Hope this helps! Thanks for subscribing!

Awesome tutorial! You might try looking into resin as a glaze coat for your polymer clay handles. I think it would hold up much better than the Triple Thick. UV resin would be preferable as you wouldn't have to worry about drips happening due to slow cure times, but two-part resin would work as well if you were careful to turn them frequently while curing.
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion! I am not real familiar with resin, but I will look into that. I have had some problems with the triple thick gloss glaze, so I ordered the Fimo brand gloss varnish as recommended by a lady who sells polymer clay hooks on Etsy. I'm going to try removing the current glaze and replacing it with the Fimo varnish to see how it works. I'll post an update once I try it. Thanks!

I was playing around with some scrap clay and made an ergonomic handle for a short piece of 3/16” stainless steel welding rod that I use as a clay tool. Although it wasn’t intentional, the handle ended up being almost identical to the Odyssey hooks that I use almost daily. What can I say? I’m a “Furls Gurl”! LOL. I’m going to try some UV resin on it this afternoon to see how it turns out.

Hi Jill. So glad you enjoyed the video! If a polymer clay hook were dropped on a hard floor, there is a good chance the clay handle would crack. However, I have had my hooks for several years, and I have found that keeping them in a good case has worked well for preventing them from being dropped. Here are the cases I like to use for this type of hook: amzn.to/3UuOPA4 amzn.to/3KOBv6u I hope this helps!

@YayForYarn Жыл бұрын
Hi Candy. You may find the blog posts where I list all of the products and steps helpful: yayforyarn.com/polymer-clay-crochet-hooks/ yayforyarn.com/polymer-clay-crochet-hook-mistake/ Do not use the DecoArt Gloss Glaze to coat the finished hooks. This did not work out well and I had to post an additional blog post explaining why and showing why the Fimo Gloss Varnish was better. Fimo Gloss Varnish is made for polymer clay. Other varnishes and coatings may not work well with polymer clay, so I would recommend choosing a varnish or glaze made by a polymer clay brand. As for the adhesive, the glue I used is also specifically designed for use with polymer clay, and bonds with the clay as it is baked in the oven. The Sculpey Bake 'n' Bond is also called "oven bake clay adhesive": amzn.to/3AXpAOD If you choose a different brand of oven bake clay adhesive, I would recommend choosing an adhesive that is made by a clay company and made for baking in the oven. E6000 may work well for glueing already-baked polymer clay, but I don't know if it is safe to bake E6000 glue. I hope this helps!

I am so excited to try this! I’m wondering how heavy the hooks are now? I had a friend make me wooden hooks and they were so heavy. I think I would prefer a slimmer version of what you have there or learn to use a heavy hook and get used to it :)
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Belinda. My hooks range from 30-36 grams each, about 1 to 1.3 ounces. The weight is similar to my favorite Furls Odyssey hooks, which weigh about 36 grams / 1.3 ounces, only they are weighted in one particular spot for momentum. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f6lmlbmFxLPZm2Q.html I actually prefer a heavier, larger-handled hook to a lightweight metal hook. The forward-weighted Furls hooks are my favorite, but my entire set of polymer clay handles cost me about the same as one Furls Odyssey hook. :) I hope this helps!

very nice work! appreciate all extra tips and detailed instruction--especially appreciate safety info about not using kitchen oven. maybe you haven't used the modified hooks long enough to answer, but have you found the glaze to wear off or do you anticipate it will? thanks!

Hi! Yes, I have been using the hooks for awhile. It seems that the glaze I used is not the most suitable for polymer clay. It does wear off a bit. The surface of the hooks is a bit sticky, and so they stick to each other and peel glaze off of each other. (I recently updated the video description to mention this.) I will be removing the current glaze and testing a different one that was recommended to me by a polymer clay artist. I will be updating the video description and blog post with the results once I test it out. Hope this helps!

Hi Linda. I do have an Etsy shop, but I don't sell crochet hooks, only PDF patterns. However, there are a lot of Etsy shops that will make custom polymer clay crochet hooks if you wanted someone to make hooks like these for you. I hope this helps!

Can you use a regular house oven and can you use parchment paper to bake your hooks on?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jennifer! I would not recommend using parchment paper or a regular kitchen oven for baking polymer clay. The purpose for the cotton batting as a baking surface is so the hooks are on something soft, and won't be dented by laying on something hard. As for using a kitchen oven, please note that polymer clay is made of chemicals. When it bakes, it turns into a type of dense, solid plastic. As the clay is baking, it releases chemicals into the oven, which coat the inside of the oven and can leach into any food baked in that oven. For the same reasons, any tools used for polymer clay should be kept separate from any kitchen utensils and only used for clay. Even after a good cleaning, residual chemicals from the clay can still be present in your oven or on your tools. I recommend getting an inexpensive toaster oven from a thrift store or yard sale and designating it to only be used for polymer clay. (Mine cost about $2.) For more info, see my blog post with step by step photos: yayforyarn.com/polymer-clay-crochet-hooks/ I hope this helps!

Wow! Awesome work! Do you sell the hooks? I can’t make them due to nerve damage and arthritis. I looked on Furls and they’re so expensive. I would love to have an I hook. I use the I 5.5 the most. They are so beautiful! Have an awesome day!

They are beautiful, are they heavy now? Also does they feel hard in the hand. The other clays you mentioned will they feel softer as an end product? I have tendonitis so bad, I am very interested in making ergonomical hooks to fit my hands so I can enjoy the craft
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Carolyn. With the clay handles, the hooks now weigh about 1 ounce each. They are a little heavy compared to a regular aluminum hook, but I actually prefer a slightly heavier feel in a super-thick handle. The handles are hard, but I don't mind that because I don't squeeze them while holding them. I prefer a gentle grasp when holding my hooks. The other types of softer clay mentioned in the video, once baked, are hard as well. Even though they are softer when raw, they are actually more difficult to work with in my opinion, because they can be almost mushy and do not hold their shape as well as the firmer clay. I hope this helps!

I got some clay as a gift from my mother this Christmas and can not wait to start making these now I do not have cotton that I can put in the oven do I really need that or if there a way to just bake it with out that and I have no way to get a toaster oven is that OK as well
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn Жыл бұрын
Hi Kelsea. Yes, I recommend putting some cotton batting or several layers of folded cotton fabric underneath. This helps prevent the handle from getting a flat spot as it rests on the tray while baking. You could do it without a soft, heat-safe pad underneath if you don't mind getting a flat spot. As for not using a toaster oven, my preference is to find a cheap, used toaster oven at a yard sale or thrift store if possible to use only for craft projects like this (and not to use for food). Some people do choose to bake polymer clay in their regular kitchen oven where they would bake food, but I would recommend doing some research on the chemicals that are released from polymer clay as it bakes before deciding if you want to bake the clay in your food oven. I hope this helps!

@YayForYarn

Hi Jean! Yes, you can make them thicker if you like. Just bake them at a low temperature for quite a long time to make sure the clay on the inside gets baked all the way through. I hope this helps!

Hi, I love this video. Very informative 👏 and they look beautiful. I was wondering do you find the handles to be to heavy? I ordered one from etsy and thought it was heavier than I'm used too. Do you know of any lighter material you can put as a filler around the hook than add the clay?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Natalie! I personally don't find them too heavy, but I also enjoy working with the forward-weighted Furls Odyssey hooks. Unfortunately, I don't know if there are any lighter materials you can fill the handle with. If you're going for a lighter weight handle, you could make them a bit thinner rather than 3/4" thick like I made. I hope this helps!

Great video, but kind of sad to cut the Clover hook! Would it be possible to pull it out instead of cutting it, and glue a less comfortable aluminium hook in it? Or maybe it's too solid for it to work?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Diana! I think it would be rather difficult to remove the rubber handle without damaging it. They are designed to stay on, and the rubber is attached to the metal hook well. I don't think it would be possible to remove the rubber without cutting it off. I hope this helps!

What did you spray on the hook before adding the clay to it.

Hi. I used an adhesive called Sculpey Bake 'n' Bond to help the clay adhere to the hook handle. This glue is activated when the clay project is baked. amzn.to/3JrYnG2 I hope this helps!

These are beautiful. Question. Why do you use the cotton batting?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dorothy! The cotton batting helps cushion and insulate the hook handle as the clay bakes. Without it, the handle would be laying directly on the toaster oven tray, which would not only leave a flat spot on the handle, but would also increase the chance of burning the clay on the bottom since the metal tray is hotter than the rest of the air in the toaster oven. The batting should be cotton or wool rather than synthetic, so it won't melt as the clay bakes. I hope this helps!

I wonder if you could take one of the finished hooks, before glazing, and make a mold of it so you can just add clay to the molds, pop them out and sandwich the hook in between two so you wouldn't have to go through the trouble of shaping every single hook.
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Christie! I think it would be possible to make molds of the hook. I think you would need to insert the hook first and sandwich it between the molds. If you mold the clay first and then insert the hook, the clay you just molded would likely get squished a bit. Hope this helps! Thanks!

Ok, I'm making a big guess that you're being raised by teachers; one or both of your parents, or a favorite aunt or something. I've got problems focusing during instruction, but I listened (and fully understood) your entire tutorial, even though I have no interest in polymer clay handles or crochet, lol. You have a great voice (thank you for not blasting music over it), perfect pacing and even know how to anticipate questions to answer as you go. I'm going to have to check out your channel to see what else I can learn.

Would it be possible to just mix the glitter into the clay instead?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Christie! Yes, you can mix the glitter into the clay. In fact, they sell a line of Fimo with glitter in it, but it didn't come in the colors I wanted. I chose to add the glitter to the surface because I thought it would use less glitter for the same amount of sparkle. I figured if I mixed it in, a lot of the glitter used would end up inside the hook where you wouldn't see it. But you could mix it in if you prefer. Hope this helps! Thanks!

How do you get your clay so smooth? Mine comes out lumpy
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dorothy! Are you referring to the lumps of clay, or the clay after it has been put on the handle? One of the best things you can do to make your clay smooth and pliable is to keep kneading it. The more you work your clay, the easier it will be to work with. Polymer clay can be especially lumpy right out of the package, but if you keep kneading it, it will become more pliable and consistent. That will also help the clay be smoother when you go to put it on the handles. If you need to smooth the clay out after it is on the handle, it can help if you roll the handle at an angle across your work surface, or between your hands. I hope this helps!
