In this video, Greg and Erik prepare for concrete by finishing the forms and adding rebar. Then, it's time for concrete. With the help of Greg's dad (Dennis) and Greg's Uncle Stan, they pour and finish the walkway (catwalk) and the apron for the barn. There's also a little visit from Bo...because when there's concrete, you gotta add handprints!
We are definitely ready to start milling ALL of the lumber for the barn, but there a few more steps to complete the sawmill cover first. It will be so nice to have a cover completed and ready for our Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill. We are ready for Fall and all of the weather that comes along with it! Excited to have a covered sawmill!
Did you know we are also building a barn?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We recently finished the foundation. Our next step will be milling the lumber for this build. We have A LOT of milling in our future.
***If you haven't checked out our Sawmill Cover Build from the beginning, definitely check out the playlist at the end of this video. We have shared the process of building this sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and live in North Idaho. This sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between! We are excited to complete this project, so we can continue milling lumber for our barn build.
Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we are building:
3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
We will be sharing the entire build!

Greg and Eric, it is great you completed the form and poured the concrete to make the walkways and the apron. Your temperature was high but you all pushed on and made everything look great. Blessings to you capable men.

Thank you, Bill! The smoke made it a little easier because there wasn't direct sun on us - one small benefit of fire season in the Northwest. Thanks for watching! 😊

Ha, ya got me! When I heard that "diagonal rebar is stronger" I said: "I didn't know that" but how? Nice.

We are excited to have this walkway (catwalk) to make milling lumber a little easier...what do you think? Would you want one? Hope you enjoy this video!

The catwalk is a big plus in my mind. If my mill was stationary it would be on cement. Cleanup , maintaining the mill and solid footing are just a few of its positive aspects. Your shed is looking good

@@coldspring624 Thank you! Seems like this sawmill cover/shed build is taking forever, but it will be nice to have it functional and complete. And, it's great practice for the barn build. Thanks for watching! 😊

Yes. I want one. I think it would be easier to keep clean. At the end of the day, just blow it out!

The walkway looks really good. I was worried that you might not broom the concrete and it would be slick when wet. I always try to work the edges so that you don't have voids when you take the form boards off. Good job. I hope that the fires stay away.

Thank you, Mike! Between Erik and my dad, I have pretty good teachers. Unfortunately, the fires have gotten worse - can't see the mountains for the last couple of days. Rain on Tuesday, we hope! Thank you for always watching! 😊

Nice Timber Frame! I'm in NV so frost lines are close, is there any reason why you couldn't have poured the footers and the pad at the same time and tie it all together? Sure would save Me a step before framing but will it frost heave the pad? I'm finding zero information on this portion and it would be a great help. Nice looking area, much nicer than the sagebrush and pinyon pines of My area. Thanks!

Thanks, Mitch! We moved back to our hometown in Idaho after spending 10 years in Minden/Gardnerville! Where are you? Far from an expert on concrete, but if I were to do it again, I’d pour the piers and pad at same time. As long as you’ve done some ground prep for the slab (compaction), seems like it would work just fine. The pad was a 3rd afterthought of the sawmill shed! 😆
