I have been wanting to build a rear drawer storage system for my Jeep Wrangler for a while now and I finally pulled the trigger. I have plans for a full storage system, but first I needed to build a secure platform for it to all be fastened to. In this video I'll show you how I built my platform, give you a quick look at the Dometic 30 Drawer fridge I'll be using and I've you all insight on the full system to come.

Hi Brad, did you take a look at Goose Gear? Not sure if they would have what you need, but take a look either way. Might get some ideas, even though you are already building this.

I’m interested in seeing your finished product. I build inserts for FJs, 4Runners, and jeeps and I get a lot of requests for something that doesn’t take the whole back of the vehicle or so the dog can ride on top. The drawer fridge is a nice option (and I have found for lunch at the job site) and it saves space. GG is $$ and a although a lot of engineering has gone into their stuff, imo, a well built wood cargo insert rides quieter. I’m working with a JK guy now on a 1-drawer/fridge drawer platform. Looking forward to your next video.

I am also in the process of building a storage cabinet in my 17 JKU To solve the problem of accessing the storage under the I will build the cabinet with a 2x4 foot running the entire depth of the cabinet and have one on each side of the jeep rear storage comprtment. This will allow access to the pan and have enough room for a folding table to slide into. One note I Don't do a lot of overland but 2- 24 " or so 2x4s won't add that much weight, and it will be low weight, as in low from the center of gravity. I am going to also leave off the wings as Joedie Poole suggested or have them hinged to be able to remove if necessary. Love your channel looking forward to the rest of this build.

I built a box for the back of my TJ out of an old cabinet. My spare tire fits in there snug and if I ever wanted to I could use it as a security box. I coated mine with Flex Seal Liquid which, truthfully was a pain in the butt but ultimately it came out really well.

I'll most likely be riveting my systems structure together and using rivnuts installed in the floor bed to mount it... I'm going to see which materials you use and see if that works for me... Oh... and great idea with the cardboard... I'll be doing that.... Keep upi the great work!!!

@@TrailRecon I'm thinking on a Setup up easy to remove, I live in Texas so there not much to camp around here, at least nothing really Jeep worth, so my setup has to be an easy and non permanent. The 2 doors can hold lots of cargo without the rear seat. To me it's the perfect overland Plataform for a couple, but it has to be well planned to make it practical.

Those gaps are filled with seldom used items. Then I move the front passenger seat forward and in goes the pillow, air mattress etc. Voila, now you have a safe and cozy sleeping space.

Future woodworking tip for drilling holes. Placing the screws into the truck is a great idea just make sure that they're deep enough that you don't mess the threads up then drill only a 1/8in hole, put duck tape or masking tape over them. Driller your counter sunk hole with a spade bit and then grill your final hole, then remove the tape. (This trick will keep the wood from chipping out). Great job and I love your Channel. 👍👍👍🚙❤️ Palm Beach FL.🐊👣🌴⛅

Brad, well done. Looking forward to seeing the full setup. Can I make a suggestion? Losing that storage place under your rear is disappointing, but maybe it doesn’t have to be! Consider putting a hatch or something under the double drawers. Think like Han Solo... it could be a smugglers compartment! The only way to access it might be to take the drawer all the way out, but that could be perfect for something you would want to hide, or something you never, ever need but will be glad you have it someday (extra ammo, a basic emergency tool kit, a stack of cash and extra passports, a few MREs and an emergency blanket...)
@TrailRecon

I thought long and hard about loosing the storage system and I think you could come up with a James Bond style access door if you wanted and maybe something I might do down the road. But the amount of storage I'm about to gain is going to more than make up for it. No more MRE's for me! LOL!

Brad, I have been kicking around ideas to do something similar but I want access to that storage, it's were the tow straps and tree savers live. I'm thinking full extension draw glides might be the ticket. I'm waiting with anticipation to see how the final system all comes together.

I keep a few items in my under jeep storage access area currently, but with all the new storage I'm going to gain, I'm okay losing. I think there are a few options that might allow you to still access it, but with my future design we just couldn't make it work.

Nice woodwork, and very helpful instructions and tips. I'm interested how that Dometic fridge works. I currently have an Alpicool fridge that fits under my Aries Security Bin. This Dometic might be a good replacement since those 40-50L fridges don't fit. I'm concerned about the exposed compressor and circuitry though. I can't wait to see the finish product. I recommend a backup camera or rear view camera when it is difficult to see at the rear anymore. I put the AEV one (expensive) for backup camera, and an Amazon one (affordable, $70) for my full time rear view camera since putting the AEV fuel caddy totally blocked my rear view. The $70 camera also has a front facing camera, and records when your driving. Install is easy too.

We are going to make sure the rear compressor is well secured, already in progress. A rear and forward facing camera might be a future upgrade. Thanks!

I have a question. I am getting ready to do a 2" Mopar lift and 33"x12.50R17 tires. I know you have used some that turned out to be bad. What tire brand should I roll with for a good all around tire for daily use and off road? Getting a roof rack and a tent for it as well. I dig your setup. It will work perfect for my JK needs. Gonna be a great summer in Michigan for me I think. Also, what size back spacing should I choose on the wheels so that I won't need spacers?

Did you have the width and length measurements without the rounded edges? Looking at doing this myself.

I have a 2 door, back seat removed, and want to do something like this platform, but I use my lower storage space... I guess it would have to just end before that?

Awesome, Brad! For me, I never liked idea of fridge as they tend to be bulky. But that Dometic looks like a good option. Thanks for sharing! Last point, your logo on the back of the cutting board looks great! Is it carved in, burned in, stained in or what? Very cool!

I'm really hoping this compact fridge works out. The cutting board was laser burned in by a friend... love how it turned out.

Buy some forstner bits and make those countersink holes super neat. No need for a router.
