Nice one, Mike - I had never heard of PAR but I can see why testing for it would be very useful for keepers of planted tanks. Groovy.

on the Apogee site it talks about the immersion effect and needing to multiply the reading by 1.08. so does that mean I should actually be multiplying the reading on the volt meter by 6.08 instead of 5? or should I multiply the answer of the reading x 5 by 1.08. example 50mv x 5 = 250 x 1.08 = 270 or 50mv x 6.08 = 304 or is the immersion effect already factored into the 5?

Thank you so much! I just put mine together, the price has gone up to $167 for the meter and all together it's a little under $200 for everything, there is another par meter around that price range, the seneye but this one at least I think seems to be better quality.

I think the dislikes might be due to having to shelve out $150 for a sensor instead of actually doing a diy and making a par meter from scratch for a lot less.

cool video, very creative. I gave it a like, the only reason I see for the dislikes is that for the cost of the PAR sensor youre instructing to by, it might be smarter to just buy a par meter for the same price and not have to rig a multimeter. Hydrogalaxy has one for $150.

You'll need the full spec par sensor for far red led. twice the price of this one but a necessity for the far red Led.

For only $30 more than the sensor you have listed you can buy a seneye reef instead. Even though its meant to be for marine tanks par is par no matter what tank you have. Theyve been out since the time of this video being made so its nothing new. Either way i like the idea of making one yourself so great job there.

@@Steve-514 if you haven’t made one or bought one you might want to check out the SQ-420 Smart Sensor. It’s a little more but you just plug into a computer via USB or a power block and it will log the data.

the only problem with par meters is that it does not tell you the amount of light at different parts of the light spectrum. For example, you could have all bulbs that put out blue light, and still get the same amount of par as a different light with green or red output bulbs. So you'd want to buy bulbs that tell you what the spectrum output is.

+chris day But when measuring an entire plant, not just one leaf, under high light the current evidence shows that all of the wavelengths between 400-700 are pretty much equal at driving photosynthesis in plants. Debunking the 1970 study. So, the wavelength balance under high light is more for aesthetic reasons than for photosynthesis. And red and blue LEDs are more electrically efficient than white, so that is why they use them. An increase in UV-B will also induce anthocyanin, which acts to protect the plant.

great idea but biotek has a par sensor with the software for 200, not so much saving with a DIY if you consider the calibration and accuracy these guys did.

The video was made 3 years ago, what you are talking about is relatively new. Im using this to convert my apex PMK to give real time readings. Good to know there is an alternative solutioni to this though! Also, apogee sells one similar for a bit more.
