Props to Eric for attempting a shower build on his own. I did two in my own house but I spent countless hours at KZfaq university learning everything I could to make sure it was done right and most importantly didn’t leak. Tile Coach was instrumental in my self training. Eric appears to have great humility to let you guys film the evaluation process and discussion.

I hear ya, I'm doing my first currently 1/2 through the wall tiling now. Such a technical room. While things are done a bit different down under channels like this and others help so much. When bro asks me why taking so long and say I'm over thinking it I just shake my head. It's so much work and effort not to get it right.

Tile coach, you went above & beyond in how you explained the mistakes to Eric without judgement or criticism and then to offer to get your suppliers to donate materials and then to coach Eric on how to do waterproof & tile correctly. I don't know a single tile contractor in my area who would go out of their way to do that. You set the bar high on how to lead the industry! My hat is off to you.

You can't blame Vevor for the homeowner not pitching the pan or the pony wall properly, and for not using thin set. And why does it matter that you were able to pull the membrane off the foam? I can do the same with more expensive systems. I say this because some of my clients cannot afford the more expensive shower systems, and saving $600 is important to some people. I've installed many Vevor systems without any issues. Like everything else, follow the manufacturers directions.

I have scrap piece of Kerdi shower tray in my garage and I just went out there, grabbed a loose edge of the membrane and pulled it clean off the foam. One can definitely do the same to the membrane properly installed on drywall/durock.

What we need is more guys testing these cheaper end products (which I am currently doing in my shop as well) and share that knowledge in comparison to the big name products like schluter wedi laticrete etc.. im currently testing vevors uncoupling mat with laticrete 253 gold and stuck glass, porcelain, marble, ceramic, mosaics and the un popular use with ditra, penny rounds to see how it holds up. I can't even pull any of the pieces off the mat, its fking crazy! Using ditra I didn't have the same results which was surprising, don't think it is operator error either, its not hard doing mockups with 100% adhesion especially in your own shop lol.

Props to the home owner for realizing he was WAY in over his head. It could have been a much larger disaster had he actually used that shower for any length of time. A for effort, F for implementation. I've done a lot of construction in my life, and it's best to let a professional deal with things that can cost me a significant amount of money in the future if I eff up. I've done a few showers, and they're good to go, but I'm a better plumber than a tiler. Water proofing and tiling a shower is an art. One that I have not mastered....yet. :) I'll keep watching Mr. Isaac in the meantime.

How many professionals has Tile Coach come behind? Bad work is bad work and if you don't know enough to do it yourself then you don't know enough to know when your getting lied to by a professional... I had to contradict a professional about a schluter install and my wife said "well, he's the professional..." but he was dead wrong! I had a Master Plumber who "in 30 years has NEVER had a callback" install a pan on a second floor shower... any idiot with a level could see it was never going to drain properly.

Great informational video, I just finished my shower and what should have taken me two months took me four lol and my wife was on me about getting it done. That’s the first time I ever did tile work and it turned out pretty amazing but I was very cautious on everything I did and get the proper slope. I did have a good buddy of mine come over and show me a couple things when I got stuck and he help me out. And, of course, watching all your videos helped out tremendously. I don’t think I ever would’ve attempted to tile a shower/total gut job without watching your videos.

It really looks like this guy did zero research for this shower. I'm getting close to installing a shower and I have been doing research on it for about a year now. I have done some floor tile install and it seems to be holding up great a year later, so I feel fairly competent at that, but all the other things like installing the drain and waterproofing still keep me up at night with everything that can go wrong. From the way everything from the tile to the drain was installed, and the products he used, this guy had to have been completely clueless on what he needed to do.

Before I tear into all diy work, I want to give respect to this homeowner for owning up to what he’s done and learned from it. I do gotta say, there’s an epidemic of diy guys who get emboldened by the internet to then fk up a whole house to the point it just needs demolished. This cycle is too wasteful. Too many times I go to a job like this, the home owner has 5k in tools collecting dust in the basement, and I gotta make his shit show look nice by demolishing thousands in new failed work. At least he came to terms with the situation and called real builders whereas others just eat shit and finish an awful project. There’s a disproportionate amount of houses hitting the market with a miserable 3-5 year expiration date before critical failures turn the whole home into a lemon 🍋 and we shouldn’t stand for it anymore. Consumers who buy New construction should ask for documentation/pictures of the process and real builders should already make an effort to actively document their work. Once this is commonplace, the owner can easily identify bad work. This will discourage amateurs to either quit early on or get real help. I learned the right way by redoing any bad work at my own expense. For some people that’s not an option like this guy. He took a shot, then called the best pro for it. But for people trying to do this for the first time and want to build a career, be prepared to take responsibility. Then be prepared to offer cheap work until your work is timely and clean. Once you feel this work is second nature, then you have the right to expect your work to increase a homes value. Until then, it really won’t.

What a bitter attitude.I see where you are coming from but think about it. However many houses you have been to because of problem, there are THOUSANDS more without any issues(a good portion owned and built by some solid hardworking people). Besides, hack tradesman of the 50-60's and Mother Nature have ruined far more houses than any DIY'er ever will. None of this is rocket science and perhaps it bothers you that weekend warriors are becoming more independent. Videos like this one are a shame but I built 2 walk-in showers and a sauna in my house with zero experience. Going on 10 years now without a single issue.

As an avid DIYer, who became a handywoman after 30 years of DIY AND renovating homes, I’ve had to fix more issues caused by contractors, doing a piss poor job than by any homeowner. It is so hard to find someone knowledgeable to do it for you even when you want to. Some contractors just sent over kids to do the job with little or no supervision. It’s gotten so hard to trust people and I’m a better Tiler and DryWaller than a few people in the trades I’ve run into. To be fair I had a boyfriend that was a contractor who taught me drywall and several other skills and one winter season when a contractor worked with me to repair my old California cottage so I could cut costs and learn. Just like It’s not all people in the trades are equal. Neither are DIYers. I am so happy that there is a KZfaq and I can watch many, many videos before trying a new skill. One thing I’d like to pass on to others I always include a few code failure videos when learning a new skill.

@@HandyMumm good on you. im speaking as a home owner who took ages finishing because I wanted to do it right, had to redo past contractor work, then took my time researching/executing tile, drywall, plumbing, glass, retention wall, etc. now i carry all those skills with me to my contract work. Contractors can be good for nothing and cheap or expensive and decent. All contractors in the industry should have the right amount of skill, but time is a factor. if they are paid by the job and not by the hour, for example, they would blast through a shower job and not do the waterproof membrane which is expected just to get it done so they can move on asap. What sets us apart as diyers is also time and enthusiasm. Ive seen too many home owners attempt to do a first time shower with a deadline to sell the property. Imagine how that ends up. If they have the time, they might not have the right attitude and end up sitting on a project so long, they end up hiring the cheapest contractors to offset the money they already spent on tools. Houses on a mass scale are suffering because of the wrong intentions and attitudes. people like you are few and far between. What is needed is the workforce to be replenished and retrained, otherwise the built environment will suffer. gone will be the 100 year house to be replaced by a 40 year house. we should be making 200 year houses, but thats hardly encouraged.

I feel bad for this homeowner, this will be an expensive lesson for him. It is hard to understand when someone with clearly limited DIY skills jumps into an expensive and complex project like a shower. A beautiful and functional shower is possible as a DIY project but I would call it an advanced DIY and only for people willing to take the time to learn how to do it correctly, read all instructions, follow all the instructions, and correctly use all the materials involved.

So is it safe to say the actual vevor system did not fail? Seems it was just installed incorrectly

But the guy at home depot said to use mastic and that he had been doing that way his whole life.

People who work at homedepot are usually people that failed at the real trades. Never take their advice. Know what you need before you go in there and don't let them talk you into buying anything else. Home depot sells items that are illegal to use in your house. They won't pass a code inspection and they are even dangerous.

I’ve wondered about the vevo products. Even had someone ask me about them since it was cheaper. I told them that cheaper isn’t better when it comes to tile prep. Atleast I have a reference video if anyone else ask about vevo products.

Mastic, grout & thinset pre-mixed would never be used by a PRO! The rain head is way too low.... Tough learning curve & $ for HO.... Tile coach to the rescue!

That has to be hard to look someone in the eye and tell them they did a horrible job. I've seen bad jobs but that is top 10 bad. Someone needs to tell him to never pick up a tile again.

I've built things since I was a kid so maybe I have a bias but I'm always confused how this sort of thing even happens in modern times? People seem to just fill up their carts at the box store then drive home and start installing with zero research. And that kit comes with a bonding flange, he could have just bought schluters adapter for a 3 piece.

Given the current options of one piece shower floors I have no idea why contractors continue to use old tile floors with all their associated potential future problems!!!!

Pretty sure Vevor is exactly the same as Kerdi, just half the price because they're not hosting contractors for 3 day all expense paid training vacations. Basing your opinion of vevor products on THIS GUYS install is not logical lol. Great video as always.

it was prob the mastic causing the waterpoof failure. Mastic sucks unless a kitchen splash.

A shower build is one heck of a challenge for a DIYer. Schluter and their counterparts makes it a little more dummy proof, but there is not enough content on the internet for a person with no experience to build a shower the old fashion way. Save your money and time. Leave it up to the professionals when it comes to building a shower.
