Episode#18 Custom Virtual Pinball Cabinet Build
In this video I will be showing you how to create your very own custom diy lock down bar and the best part is that there is no welding required!
In this video we will continue from part 1 and I will be explaining how to cut your sheet metal, hammer form, make and install the j hooks, install the toggle clamps, and paint with a wrinkle paint. So good!
This is an expensive part of the build (lock down bar, receiver, shipping, duty, taxes) and often people require custom widths or even custom lengths to fit their custom pinball cabinets so this info is crucial to be able to make this yourself. Sooo much pinball cabinet goodness for any inspiring cabinet builders out there.
I learned a lot doing this video and would like to share some recommendations to improve the part created in this video.
1) I recommend that people do not use the table saw to create the angled part at the front of the lock down bar as it is pretty big potential for kickback and injury, especially if someone is not trained in preventing kickback. I would recommend using a rasp, file, or maybe even a belt sander to create this angle as this is way safer for people out there.
2) Although it seems to be pretty sturdy when installed on the cabinet, I would recommend cutting another piece of sheet metal and epoxying it to the underside of the lockdown bar and incorporating the j hooks into that piece. This will make the piece more stiff and provide a way stronger surface area for the epoxy to attach to.
3) The wrinkle paint is more durable than regular paint especially after baking it; however, powder coating would be ideal. If you have access to a welder (some local high school metalwork program or maker space may be able to help you out) that would be ideal because then this part could be powder coated.
4) You may want to pre cut a slit out of the corner where the shrinkage needs to happen to allow the corner to form easier/better as it will require the cut anyways in order to make the part. I made a larger radius sample piece after and it did not help, this part requires the cut and epoxy or welding after. I will be showing this in my future welded stainless steel version.

LOL, well my beard is getting whiter! Happy to bring you joy every Thursday.....now to figure out how I can share this with the whole world just like Santa. It's very hard to do this in a sea of other KZfaq videos out there. Yeah the ld bar turned out great and hopefully this video can help a bunch of people when they build their own. Wait till you see the next video, the stainless version is wicked awesome! Yeah you know, I try to be very genuine in my videos, I'm not trying to just make cool stuff and hide all of my mistakes....they happen to everybody. It's what you do with these mistakes is what's important, ya learn and improve....which you'll see in the next video. Thanks for the watch dude and for your support of this channel. Merry Xmas Patrick....Merry Xmas!

There is a good bit of new information for me in this one. I think the test run on with mild steel is going to help with the results of the stainless. I look forward to seeing that process. Great work as always!

Ya if you haven't ever done it before, I would suggest the practice piece. You can also experiment with the size of the cut out in the corner so you have a perfect bend and almost no gap to fill or weld. The stainless version video is coming, I'd wait till you see that one before starting on it. Cheers Mike!

Most intimidating build step I’ve ever seen. I was freaking out when you cut those corners. Lol The JB Weld looked really good! Hind sight, perhaps you can leave some tips in the comments. Just cut the corner before hammering to make hammering easier knowing your going to fill afterwards? Also… you said before you did this to save costs. Any idea what it cost you to make this? As someone who doesn’t have stainless steel lying around, I’m wondering if I would save anything at all if I had to by and entire sheet and then cut off the 6” I need. Lots of expensive scrap. Ideas? All in all, an amazing video on no weld hammer forming! I especially loved the tip on choosing a hammered metal finish paint to hide your hammer marks! That was a pro move! Great video man.

Thanks Donald! Great comments and questions too! Yes you are right, people should figure out a cut out to do on the corner so it's way easier to form; I did this video to show my learning process and how to do it knowing this would happen rather than just show a final product like some youtubers do. In the next video, I use this knowledge to help me make a perfect version but out of stainless. Cost? Almost free dude. I had the wood (maybe $5-10), I had the 19 gauge steel sheet metal (maybe $5), I had the flat bar ($2), I had to buy the jb weld ($10), and the paint was like $12. I would not buy a whole sheet of steel or stainless, just order the exact size you need, it will be way cheaper. Just go to a metal supplier local to you. Thanks for the watch dude, if ya haven't already, I could really use some help spreading the word about my channel. Thanks in advance!

I've decided to build a 32 inch playfield mini vpin. I have a question about the side rails. Since my cab will not be as long as a standard WPC cab, I need alterative side rails. I've found Pinball 2000 side rails that are 42-13/16" long. How long would I need my cabinet sides need to be to accommodate those rails? Thanks for the video!

That I'm not sure about. Perhaps someone who has build a mini pin on the facebook group will know that answer. I would be tempted to just modify a stock set to the length I needed. Good luck and thanks for the watch!

can i ask why your tv is sloping downwards towards the back of the machine shouldnt it be the other way around higher at the back and lower at the front .
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench Жыл бұрын
Its further down at the back but the back is higher to begin with so it's not actually leaned back, it's just slightly upwards to make room for the 4" needed for the matrix aleds and to simulate a real pinball table playfield. Thanks for the watch!

Hi, i really like your videos and you inspired me to start to build my own pinball cabinet. My only worry with that is the crafting part, especially the metal workings like in this video. I dont have any experience with that, or any tools to learn it. For woodworking i will work together with my father in law, so he can support me with that. I am an IT guy, so the wireing and configuring of components will be no problem. What would you recommend me to do? Buy premade ones and plan the cabinet to fit the bar? Im really excited for hours now, watching almost every part of your journey and meanwhile its 2:40 in the morning here in Germany. The end result looks so amazing that i am a little intimidated to be honest. I hope my cabinet will look half as good as yours.

Good luck and enjoy your build! Prost!

@@wayofthewrench Thanks for the advice. Maybe i will ask a metal shop in my area if they can build one for me when i have the measurements ready. May i ask how many weeks/months it took to build? It looks and feels like many many weekends 😅 My mother in law has wanted a Indiana Jones table for a very long time, but a original one in good shape will go for 12-15k Euros over here. Thats another reason what started me on that topic. But nonetheles i'm very happy i found your channel. You definitly got my sub. Is it ok to get back to you if i got any questions down the line?

It took a long time but because of all the filming and editing. It's seriously adds hundreds of not thousands of hours to this series. Just take your time and enjoy the build, it also allows you to spread out the cost. Indy would be a cool theme! Yes of course, ask your question in the corresponding video and I'll help you out as much as I can. Cheers!
