DJI Pocket 2 Mics: Tutorial for Great Sound with the Onboard Mics!
Onboard Microphones Explained:
The DJI Pocket 2 is a great improvement over the original Osmo Pocket. The DJI Pocket 2 Creator Combo is also a great package for vloggers and video creators on-the-go because it includes the Do-It-All Handle and a wireless mic module.
But what if you didn't buy the DJI Pocket 2 Creator combo? Can you still get great sound? You can!
In this video I will explain the mic modes with the new DJI Pocket 2. You can focus sound with the 3 microphone modes from just the onboard mics! I'll explain the new SoundTrack feature, and I'll touch on the zoom feature which works by amplifying sound as you zoom.
I'll also show you a very inexpensive and portable way to set up a mic if you vlog without the wireless mic module!

Hi Andrew. The Pocket 2 also records in stereo and if you get the creator combo, a wireless mic. Also, you can hear your clip through the small speaker on the front of the do-it-all handle when you review it!

considering the upgrade from the pocket 1 for my Theme parks and travel vlog and that "Front and Back" setting is what I needed to know about because I bounce between filming myself on camera and what I am looking at on rides and in the parks while doing narration! Seems like that is the setting I would use, thanks for the review!

Yes! Get the Creator Combo and you’ll also get the wireless mic designed for the pocket. It’s great for vlog type videos too!

@@TechTravelBeyond thanks for the tips! I have many years of filmmaking experience with "movie cameras" but it is surprising how little of that translates to these small, do it all cameras! Just 15 years ago when I started making movies, 4k wasn't even really a "thing" especially outside of huge studios and then it became only available to use if you had a large indie budget and now for $400 you can get 4k, slo mo, and audio that is workable in post...amazing lol

great in depth guide my guy. is it possible to use the built in mics and say a wireless one if i bought the creator combo at the same time? id like to be able to use the front back system while having a wireless mic connected keep up the great work!

Unfortunately, the DJI Creator Combo can only use one sound source at a time. Onboard mics, or wireless mic, or an external mic via the 3.5 mm jack. If you use any of those sources, the others aren’t available since there is no on board mixer/gain controls. Thanks for watching!

Wind will filter sounds like wind noise, and like most electronic filters, may reduce volume. Test it out for your filming situation. Thanks for watching!

Very informative Chuck👍. I’m interested in exploring more sound recording aspects of video like when recording a marching band on the move, emphasis being on the music being played. Do you think the Pocket’s built-in mic array can handle the job? Have not had an opportunity to try it for myself yet but would like to be prepared for the occasion. Thanks.

Philip, it depends on how you're filming the marching band. If you're on the sidelines as they move, an external directional mic may be great for "pointing" you in the right direction as you film them. This depends on how far you are filming them. If you want a creative immersive experience as you film the band, stand in a stationary spot as they move past you while you're in the middle of where they walk. You can use the onboard mics with all four mics on. You could do the same walking with them, but you may only hear the instruments in closest proximity the loudest. I've seen all those shots on parades on TV, and you might see some of these creative shots on here on KZfaq!

@@TechTravelBeyond understand what you mean about standing stationary whilst the band marches past you. Something like that would be disallowed unless you’re the official photographer. The scenario that I would find myself in is where I’ll be one of many other spectators and trying to keep up with the band as they perform down the route. The Pocket would be mounted on the extension rod which may or may not have an external mic hooked up. The idea is to be able to capture the marching band as they perform as well as the music played. The specific situation I’m hoping to capture can be seen on KZfaq by looking up “Tachibana Band Rose parade” and many more. Thanks Chuck for the responses.

The best bet, Do it all Handle with the DJI Pocket 2 wireless mic. You can plug a lav mic into the handle, or...if you want to go wireless, plug your lav mic into the DJI Pocket 2 wireless mic module. If you don't want to purchase both, the Movi adapter works well with the lav mic. I've used it when i don't want to carry around the Do It All Handle and wireless mic.

Hi Amit! While the DJI Pocket is a tiny powerful camera, it doesn’t have mixing capabilities. You must decide if you want to use the onboard mics, the DJI Wireless Mic included with the creator Combo, use an external mic plugged into the 3.5mm input on the DoItAll handle, or a mic with an adapter plugged into the USB-C port. You cannot use any of these sources simultaneously. Thanks for watching!

Your Instructions on sound is perfect easy to understand . However my question as follows When I record a Video and I play it back on the pocket 2 screen there is no sound can you tell me why ?

Hi Michael. There is no onboard speaker with the Pocket 2. You can hear your video if you attach the DoItAll Handle from the Creator Combo. The DoItAll handle has a speaker on the front of it, and when you playback video, you can hear it. The DoItAll handle also has a 3.5mm input jack, and you can also hear audio playback with wired earphones too.

Nice video and learned about the audio side of pocket 2, one problem I have is with the camera always set to the selfie mode and I have to press the button next to the record button 3 times quickly to get it to face frontwards ! Surely this is not right? Should I contact DJI? Or is there a setting that will make this right? Thanks in anticipation, subbing to your channel as I need to find out more about the pocket 2! 👍

Hi David! Hopefully you have installed the latest Firmware via the MiMo app. If you have, then when you use the power button to power on the gimbal it will face you in selfie mode. When you power on the Pocket using the button you used to triple tap, it will face forward. They did this so it’s a quicker start to film in the direction you choose. Hi! This is just the onboard sound without the wireless mic. The onboard directional sound options are pretty good if you want to just do some quick filming without carrying the wireless mic.

So compact and cool looking device. What is your lighting setup? I have hue color bulbs, but they don't light spread light far enough. are you using colored light tubes?

AJ Core TV, I used two ViJim VL196 on light stands on the corner of the couch base next to me for the color, and two Neewer 45 watt LED light boxes right next to the camera on the warm light setting. I was using just general daylight setting and decided to change it up and add some color this time! Thanks for noticing!

Very well explained, thank you, but with the Smatree 5000 mah battery grip, how to use a lav mic? Either we only use pocket 2's internal mics while vlogging or use the do it all handle and it's wireless rechargeable mic if we want to use the Smatree battery grip. Please suggest the best solution. Since you cannot use two items with the USB-C port, your best bet is the DoItAll handle with the wireless mic that comes with the creator combo. It sounds great, and I used it in some videos. Thanks for watching!

Halit, Thank for watching! I usually use the Sony ZV1, but for this video, I used the Sony A6400. Links to both are in my video descriptions. They both have great color, and the focus is incredible. With the A6400, I used the Sigma 16mm F1.4, so it gives a nice blurred background too!

Great job, I subscribed and would like to buy you a cup of coffee! Interesting that the "C" USB port can be a sound mike! I use the 3.5 port to monitor the sound of the on board mics, big question is could I use my Rode 2 wireless mike on the "C" port and use the Creator 3.5 jack for monitoring the sound?

Hi Glenn! If you have the Creator Combo, you can use the wireless mic which comes with the DJI Pocket 2 Creator Combo, and monitor the sound. From your videos on your channel, it looks like you have one talent on camera, and one camera person. This would work well. I really need your help! I'm so tempted by this camera as the picture and gimbal are great BUT I need something that can block out wind as I record with no speech just ambient street noise Is there anything out like a case or windmuff to cut out wind noise?

You could always hook up an external mic of choice with a deadcat/windmuff. If you get the creator combo, you can plug directly into the do it all handle or if you just get the Pocket itself, use the usb audio adapter for your mic of choice. Thanks for watching!

Hi. Thanks for good tips. Do you know does the ISO max settings work in pro mode if other exposure settings are on auto?

Yes it does! When you tap on the ProMode Icon, the first top left square is ISO, and you can use the ISO AutoMax settings. I try to go no further than Auto ISO 800 because it can get grainy beyond that. I keep white balance on Auto for most of my shots because in most of my shots, I'm not varying from outside to shade to indoors. If the colors look off when I preview before shooting, I may consider manual white balance, but most times that is on Auto. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for this. But if I may suggest, if you’d like an even better setup without the wires, get the Edutige ETM-001 mini mic available on Amazon. It plugs directly into the 3.5mm jack of the Pocket 2’s all-in-1 handle bar. No extra adapters needed. :)

Another Great video. Question. Im planning on starting a vlogging travel channel walking around cities etc. My question is if i stop and talk to random people on the street or in shops etc then my pocket 2 wireless mic won't pick up their audio very well. How would i overcome this. Thanks and keep up the great work

What you can do is what I’ve seen some vloggers do. They have clipped the mic onto the Pocket case and do the interview using the mic hand held. They’ll ask a question talkingninto the mic, then point it towards the person answering the question. I’ve seen it done that way with regular cameras using other wireless mics too so that will work with the Pocket 2 wireless mic. A vlogger in Japan uses his pocket 2 that way!

If you were using the wireless mic clipped to your shirt, do you get the front mic on board if you were interviewing someone? Or would the wireless pickup enough of the conversation to be acceptable

The DJI pocket is small and it does not mix sound. If you don’t turn on the wireless mic, it uses the in board mics. You plug in a mic to the side input, that mic is the sound source. If you turn on the wireless mic with the do it all handle, then that’s the sound source. If you want to mix sound and use more sources, then plug in a mixer to the do it all handle’s input and then plug in multiple mics into that mixer. Thanks for watching.

We love to interview people on the spot that work in cool shops, would I be better having my settings as front/back or should I have it on all? AlsoWe have the wireless mic that comes with the Osmo but it turns off the other mics and only keeps the wireless on am I doing something wrong? Great video

I would say if your talent or person you’re interviewing is directly in front of you and you are behind the Pocket, front and back. The Pocket is not a mixer so only one sound source is allowed. The wireless mic only, the onboard mics only, or a mic plugged in to the do it all handle only. If you want to mic two people, I suggest plugging in the Rode Wireless Go version 2 into the do it all handle. You’ll be taking the sound of the two Rode wireless mics and using them as the one input source into the do it all handle. The Rode receiver will blend the two mics in the wireless mic receiver. Hello. Is the adaptor can use for split audio and mic? I dont have the creator combo accessories, so I cant hear the video when I am playing it back, unless I will plug into my phone. I want to play back my video and check if audio is good, but need to plug in all the time to my phone :'( any suggestions ? The All in one handle is pricey :(

Unfortunately, the only way to hear the audio in playback on the DJI Pocket 1 & 2 is via the mimo app on your phone, or if you have the DoItAll handle's speaker. Unfortunately, DJI didn't set up the USB-C port with universal specs like most cellphones and tablets, so it's only for power-in for charging, or for specific USB-C mic adapters for input from a mic.

Hi, i noticed theres a 1-5 star rating in the option, do you have a list where the Star Quality belongs to a certain video settings? Maybe thats the reason why i cant take a good 4k60 video because its only 1star. Thank you

Hi Yuri. I couldn't find a star quality in the menus of the Pocket 2. Where did you find it? There's only a High-Quality on or off in the video settings. It refers to the type of video processing, and if it's on, it uses more battery power in exchange for a higher bit-rate output for video. I usually have it on since I film in shorter clips. It may cause more heat and possible shut down if you film longer segments with it on.

Thanks for the info Chuck, I have just purchased DJI pocket 2. I am still learning. Once I shot a video, but suddenly the sound didn't show up. I wonder if I have pressed some button during recording that the sound didn't show up when I watch it on laptop. Do you have any idea why? Please advise, thanks. Gyo

Check all your settings, and if you have something plugged into the audio port of the Do It All handle, make sure it's not a headset with mic. This may interfere with your audio because the input port detects a mic. Also, if you plug anything into the USB-C port, make sure it's not equipped with a mic if you don't intend to use it. You can use a third party mic and receiver. While the USB-C is only for power, if you want to plug in a mic, you have to use the compatible usb-c audio input adapter made for the Osmo Pocket.There’s a link in the description for one, and I showed you how to do it at the end of the video.

Nice style of tutorial. When I enter the pro mode menu, I don't have all the options that are in the video. how come? I'm using the do it all handle by the way. But I think that will not influence settings.

Which menu is missing? If you have the DoItAll Handle and the wireless mic, make sure the wireless mic is off so the onboard mics of the do it all handle are enabled. Once you have the onboard mics enabled, you will see the directional sound menu on the bottom right of the Pro Mode audio control page.

Hey Oblivion! I've not had that problem on the Pocket 2, but I did have that once on the DJI Osmo Action. What happened was I was on a cruise, and the camera had humidity from coming from a cold AC suite, to the outside. I didn't let the camera gradually acclimate to the warm humid air. After drying it out by not using it and keeping it in a less humid condition, it stopped. I also reset the camera to defaults, and re-added my custom settings. Perhaps that might help? If not, I'd reach out to DJI. Thanks for watching!

Just got a pocket 2 and have a Boya lav mic. It supports both, 2 and 3 divisions on the jack, so you can select to use it with a PC or smartphone. Connecting it to an USB-C adapter just like yours doesn't work. Doesn't matter which way I select the switch on the mic, the icon on the Pocket doesn't show it's using the mic. Any ideas? Didn't want to spend on the official DJI adapter because they're way too expensive in my country. Thanks for the video.

@@howdoesitsound5672 For that particular day it was breezier than expected and I had wind reduction setting off. Since all mics were on it picked up the breeze and the planes in the background. That’s why my voice went in/out because of the wind passing over the pocket 2 surfaces. Non breezy day, not an issue. Thanks for watching!

@@footstepsandadventures Yes! Just get the adapter I show in the video for the USB-C to 3.5mm TRS connector, and it will work. Just make sure you get the adapters I've listed because DJI didn't design the Pocket USB-C port to work with universal adapters like they did with Osmo Action 2, 3 and 4. I've used my Rode Wireless Go and DJI Mic in the same way without the DoItAll handle.

Pro Mode enables the volume level menu panel. You don’t have to use all the other exposure options if you don’t want to, but to control audio levels, turn on Pro Mode.

The Creator Combo’s do it all handle has a tiny speaker on the front. You can hear your audio during playback when it’s attached. If not, you can attach your phone and play it back through the DJI Mimo app and you’ll hear sound through your phone.

The Pocket camera only allows one mic source to be used. See the manual. The onboard mic, wireless mic, and the audio jack on the do it all handle work as the only input sources, and cannot be used together. Best bet is to get a mic like the Rode Wireless Go with 2 mics and one receiver. You can then use the Rode mics together with the receiver as the input into the Pocket 2s do it all handle.

The DJI Pocket 2 USB-C port needs the adapter I show in this video. I plugged in the lavlier using the TRS adapter since a USB-C mic does not work with this version. The newer DJI Pocket 3 has a universal USB-C port which will work with USB-C audio products. Unfortunately the DJI Pocket 2 does not.

Am I the only one that's hearing that "robotic" sound every now and then with the onboard mic's? It's soooo annoying. It drives me nuts since I noticed it and makes it very unpleasent to listen to. Great video btw! :) I think I'll get the creator bundle to get the wireless mic. Do you know if I can record audio with the wireless mic without recording video?

The motor sound you hear is the gimbal, and perhaps your sound level for mic sensitivity is too high? As far as the mic for the Creator Combo, it only works while you're recording video on the Pocket 2 with the Do It All handle. It cannot be paired to anything else, and only works while recording on the Pocket 2 Creator Combo. Thanks for watching!

Curious if anyone is using a lapel mic with the pocket 2 with great results and if so what brand/model? I personally own a Sennheiser MKE2 lav mic - and would love to use this - but because of the locking feature on the mic TRS tip it just wiggles in the 3.5mm jack on the pocket2. Does anyone know if such an adapter exists? Merci.

I did the Pocket review video and the Better sound video showing the use of the Purple Panda lavaliere mic. It works and I didn’t have issues with the fit. Perhaps you might want to try another mic with a 3.5mm jack?

As long as you plug in a USB-C compatible mic for the Pocket or use the adapter, you will pick up sound. You can adjust the gain in the second menu in the Pro settings. I use it with a lavaliere sometimes on the Osmo Pocket and Pocket 2! Thanks for watching!

@@LJLMovies and that’s why it doesn’t work. I gave specific instructions in the video and DJI Pocket cameras require their adapter or the ones like movo that have the USB-c connections for audio built in.
