do photographers NEED to Niche?

In photography circles you'll often hear the advice to 'niche down' being banded about. But do you really need to stiffle yourself into a niche in order to move your photography forward?

Thank you Dave, for the workshop last week. Iceland was cold and expensive, not necessarily in that order. I loved the experiance and will return again

Feel the magic indeed Dave ! Great little insight and way to go by not constraining oneself (unless you want to ) but just enjoy taking the camera out and capturing beautiful images whatever the genre style and subject matter that captures your imagination 💭

I decided from the start that my channel would have to be around whatever I fancied photographing that week. I'm pretty sure I would have given up some time ago if I were sticking to one niche area. Different for you, I guess as you're doing all the other stuff as your day job. We'll all be full time KZfaqrs one day though, right? 😁

Not sure how I missed this one, but as I was scrolling through, JoAnna says "Let's Click Photography, isn't that your buddy Dave?" Maybe it was the different, colorful thumbnail that made me miss it. Anyway, of course, I clicked on it and JoAnna actually watched it because...she likes your accent. At the end, she says in her best Manchester accent, "I don't know what his niche really is, but he's bloody good at all of them". Actually, it was more like her best Hermione from Harry Potter accent, but I couldn't agree more. Great stuff mate and great thoughts as always. Hope all is well. Let's set up a May chat soon!

Knew you did wedding photography, no idea you did food photography though. I’m hungry now 😁 pretty good outdoor photographer too actually, and a great eye for critique. Very informative video Dave, not that i’ll be turning pro any time soon 😁

Food photography actually saved my business. When the wedding and portrait industry crashed in 2020-2022 a lot of my peers locally ended up closing forever. I pivoted early to food photography. I knew restaurants would have to launch online services and need imagery and that kept me afloat. There was a period of time where I was feeding the whole street..we couldn't shoot on location so restaurants were delivering boxes of food to me at home to photograph. Still get the kids down the road asking me for pizzas each week haha

That’s amazing 😊 sounds a bit like our new neighbour, he inspects food (or something like that) and as a result brings us and others at our end of the street tomatoes, oranges, grapes, kumquats, sugar snaps, mange touts, garlic - and apparently lots of strawberries when summer arrives. And the quality is unbelievable 👍🏻

How many website do you have. Looks like a site for each topic. But it’s true in what ya say. I know guys that all they do is weddings, nothing else. I don’t think it’s a good idea to constrain yourself to one topic. It’s all about learning and keep learning

In total 6. Three are really low maintenance and rarely need anything doing to them, three are 'active' but mostly in terms of a blog post monthly and update of images on occassion. TBH it's less work than social media and I get more work from them (which is why I don't really post on socials overly much outside of LCP)

@@LetsClickPhotography nice. I was thinking about just having a landing page and showing my top 10 images, and if I shoot something better then just replace the old one. Keeping the 10 images updated.

Where is the fun in restricting yourself in one genre. I understand in the magical world of KZfaq, everyone wants to be a landscape photographer but if you analyse all of the content produced by photographers worldwide, landscape would be a tiny percentage.

You're so right. In terms of YT percentage it's actually a really small 'niche' when compared to something like portrait photography or travel photography. Even food photography is equally as big (if not bigger) than landscapes on this platform.
