I'll admit it, I've been triggered. Photography is being led in the wrong direction and I had to call out this ridiculous statement about the enemy of photography.

The first thought that came to mind was “Hold my beer!!” 😂 I’ve seen the first few seconds of that very advertisement, fortunately sensible (nearly said knowledgable by mistake) to just click through it as quickly as possible. Well done for standing up and calling it out, I hope you don’t get any flack mate, because you’ve hit the nail on the head. Sooooo many black Friday deals lurking, which would have you believe you’ve got the wrong kit, or outdated software blah blah blah. My wife had already promised me a new laptop when we sold the house, decided to change from windows to apple - the bloomin cheeky buggers don’t do any discount! I’m off to find out how long I can now survive without my missing organs 😂😂

haha yep, the 'skip ads' button is the most clickable thing on YT! I hear you about the mac - my laptop has become so unreliable that I've had to plump up for a new MacBook.....I held off until 'cyber week' just to see if there might be anything, but no! Ridiculous price at even the base model - I need that beer after paying that! So far, no flack - well I deleted two idiots, but that's just the weekly norm on here haha Thanks Martin

Couldn't agree more mate. This is exactly the reason I don't subscribe to any of the manufacturers channels, or any gear review channels. It's also the reason I've used the same gear for a few years now. I'm happy with it and I invest in knowledge (as you said). I try to render myself immune to advertising, But you are spot on about everything you said here. Always a great and informative watch pal. Hope you are well, chat soon!

Cheers mate. There was a report in the UK last week that suggested each person sees an average of 1000 advertisements per day.....it's shocking really. I've definitely had my moments over the years of being sucked in but the improvement of how to use, is so much better (and cheaper) than the improvement of what you use. Hope you had a great long weekend with the family mate :)

Very odd thing to say to or about photographers. But you’re so right, it’s all about the sales and getting you to part with the green.

Light is not a photographer's enemy, that is just plain daft. Knowledgeable and creative use of light is central to producing good photographs.

Being a grounded and sensible "photographer," I'm not swayed by advertising or so-called influencers. There is no such thing as bad light or good light, just an ability or an inability to use the light to your advantage, and shoot subjects that suit the amount or quality of light available. I'm not easily influenced by the pushers of software or equipment, and don’t waste money on the latest or greatest. A colleague of mine has to have the latest gear, but he still can't produce better shots than me with my 10-20 yr old equipment and no Ai.

Great video and so very true! Light is indeed photography - without it, there is no image. It might be controversial, but I actually feel that the more gizmos that are in modern cameras, the less skill is needed to get a good image. I love shooting film still as it forces me to get it right in camera, although I still have that ethic when using my DSLR. I feel a much greater sense of satisfaction when I see that I have nailed it with one of my film pictures compared to one of my digital images as I know with the film one, I have had to use my knowledge to produce the image rather than taking an image, then checking the back of the camera, to see if my histogram looks 'right'.

Thanks for your thoughts Sarah. I completely get where you are coming from, but I've seen enough terrible images from photographers with gear worth tens of thousands to be of the opinion that for those who have the skill, digital just makes things easier. But those without skill, it is no considerable help outside of aiding focus. Knowledge, experience and an individual style will always trump technology.

I have to be honest and say i have fallen into this trap before , many years ago now, when i had the old GAS syndrome. Mainly brought on by the power of advertising but roll forward a few years and i see now my photography has not improved as a result of gear i purchased its the hard work in going out learning by mistakes and as you say gaining the knowledge of how to use the gear you have. After all photography has been around for hundreds of years and was just as impactful say 50 years ago as it is today as the photographer had the knowledge and skills to get the images they were after . They certainly never had digital cameras , global shutters and all the other high tech things we have today. There is no substitute for hard work. Yes some gear can make things easier for you but you still have to have the fundamental knowledge in photography to use them to full benefit . Hope your well Dave take care !

You and me both - I bought a 5d mark iv because of marketing ploys and perceived pressure from groups of photographers that I must have it if I'm going to be a pro. It did nothing for me whatsoever (I'm not knocking it btw, it's a great camera) and I ended up selling it less than 18 months later. I take a lot of pride these days in being able to produce sellable work with nothing more than a decade ish old crop and a cheap zoom - and it is a level of photography that 10 years ago I was made to feel was only possible with high end gear. Turns out that experience and knowledge trumps gear every time. Thanks Lee, hope you are good too.

Selling new gadgets is all the name of the game, it doesn't matter if its a camera or software, we're all made to feel like we're missing out if we don't have the latest kit. I have a boat load of cameras, most of them would be considered old hat, in fact I don't think any of them are current models. Yes when Black Friday rolled around I was sat there with the dilemma, do I trade up for a full frame...…Then I sat and thought about all the other things I could be doing with the money by the time I bought a body and a few lenses (not even pro ones). I'll stick with what I have now and learn to get the best out of it I can. I'm not a pro so I don't have to keep up with the Jones in order to keep customers happy. I think we all get triggered by things now and again. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

I've been a full time pro for four years and I'm telling you, in that time, not a single client (outside of an agent) has ever had any questions about the gear I'm using. I don't list it anywhere (other than with said agent as per their requirements) and I don't talk about it with any potential clients. Nobody cares about gear outside of photographers, all clients care about are the final images, they don't care what you use to do the job, as long as you can do the job. And I talk to a lot of other pros, most of which are using old cameras - some of which are crops. The 'pro' world that exists within YT, photography groups and social media is definitely not the pro world that I work within......that video I did the other week with the statues using the 'cheaper old gear' wasn't a one-off haha. Of course (just for transparency!), I wouldn't use a bridge camera to shoot a wedding....I'm sure you get that's not what I'm saying.....but the saying horses for courses holds true. All that said though, I was looking at the deals over the weekend too and thankfully held myself back from a new purchase - sometimes clarity of thought can be lost in discounted confusion ha ;)

Does he mean that lack of light is the enemy of photographers? Certainly odd to say light is the enemy. What does the software do? I haven't seen the full video, so I wouldn't want to judge too much, but as someone who works in graphic design for marketing, I'm well aware of all the dirty tricks! I like how your monitor switched itself off towards the end, almost as a reaction to how annoyed you were about the subject! 😂

I didn't want to dwell on the product itself as I really didn't want that to become the talking point. But I definitely took it as a scripted line, not a faux pas. haha yeah the screen, I need to increase the sleep time when recording - I didn't have the flip out so didn't see it until the edit! Thanks for watching mate.

Why didn’t you show the video in question during your critique? Take us on the journey with you. With respect, I mean no offense, but why should we take your word for it without seeing your context? What is the link? I’d like to see what rubbish it is. :) But without further info, I would agree about your comments about light wholeheartedly. It is alpha and omega. And all those complaining about greed…you should stick with your 35mm film camera from 1960’s. Eschew innovation, because innovation ain’t free. I don’t know this for certain, but I’m pretty sure modern cameras are complex and costly to manufacture. Of course businesses want your $. That’s why they’re in business. Biz Revenue funds R&D for innovation and “progress” I suppose. Your next gigapixel sensor with 25 stops of dynamic range. But I also hate false advertising! Spinsters. Appealing to emotions only. Manipulative. The older I get the more impatient with that stuff…the more I just want the facts and let me decide for myself. Sigh….

It was a conscious decision to not include any more of the advert. Two reasons, firstly, I really didn't want the talking point to be about the software in question, if I had included more of the ad then I know that would have been where it went. And secondly, it wasn't my intent to rag on the other photographer in the advert.....he's just earning a crust and reading out lines probably scripted for him. As for the rest of your comment, I agree completely. If we want innovation and development then of course, the manufacturers & developers need to be making profit through sales. But there is another way, just look at Fender Play in the music world. A perfect example of how a company can vastly improve sales through a programme of helping artists improve their skill levels with their current tools. Eventually you upskill the artist enough that they will inevitably want to upgrade their tools....and through the process created a strong brand loyalty.
