In this video I go over some of the most effective methods to get rid of knee pain. This is specifically for patellar tendinopathy, which is one of the most common overuse injuries in jumping athletes, and especially dunkers!
The three types of exercises that I cover are isometrics, depth landings, and slow concentric strength training with barbell back squats. Properly progressing with these exercises will build up your tendon's capacity to bear load and eventually progress to more traditional jump training that can get you adding inches on your vertical jump!

Thank for these tips Isaiah, as a skateboarder, basketball player, and cyclist I put so much stress on my knees and recently developed jumpers knee so I’m currently working on getting back to skateboarding mainly . Overuse without proper rest or warming up has got me in pain at age 30 .

Just ran into your channel must admit I'm definitely a fan love seeing your dunks ! You're truly blessed I'm only 6'ft tall but in HS I had up's as well ! At the age 15 I was dunking as well mostly off one leg and a few steps but I did finally dunk vertical my JR year

very modern advice. Best thing to know for (most) people going through knee pain or any injury really is, movement and training (within a reasonable range of discomfort) beats rest.

something that worked for me was doing ONLY pause squats. that alone fixed my jumpers knee. so yeah, isometrics are definitely the key

This Video comes in the perfect moment : ) Im 15 Years old and 6 Feet tall. I wish you fast progress : ) btw I went to the docter with my knees and they found out, that I havnt Problems with jumpers knees, they only hurt because of growth, so so far I cant Start strenght Training

Great video. Solid advice. I personally use all 3 of these techniques and they work. But why not talk about the two other biggest reasons for knee pain? Imbalance at the hips and ankles/ feet. Most jumpers jump a lot on one side so unless they are doing unilateral movements on both sides you’ll eventually have knee pain unless you take care of both hips and ankles/feet. A video on that would be good.

Hey Isaiah, I just had 2 questions. 1. What would you prioritize. Staying below a 4 in pain or going to 70% your maximum output? Like what if it hurts beyond a 3 to go to 70% your maximum effort? 2. When you lift, do you use weightlifting shoes or just regular shoes?

What should I do when I get flare up’s in the middle of basketball season? If my coach sees that I can walk he’ll assume that I’m not injured, so can you do this while still playing ball 4-5 times a week?

Isaiah, does knee pain when doing activities (such as jumping, running, squatting etc) correlate with the knee pain I feel when I touch the tendon? For example, doing a single leg squat doesnt hurt much, but touching the patellar tendon makes it feel like it's super sensitive.

Nice video but I am curious on how to prevent knee pain, as I would like to prevent it during my own dunk journey. I got a bit of knee pain some dunk sessions ago and am now doing a strenght phase. So I hope next time I cut en have more dunk days and jump 100% I want my knee's to stay healthy.

Hey man awesome stuff, do you find that you get sore from doing isometrics 3x/day? I find that if I load to where 1 min isos would be a max, 9 sets in a day will have me toasted. Does this indicate that I should ease into 9 sets a day or should I maybe load less? In that case I wonder if loading less would even be worth it for the sake of volume, what do you think?

front is great, but your shoulder core strength might be a limiting factor when you progress. I like to do split squat or heal elevated back squat

Front squats are great, you get more out of less weight and it translates great into cleans. Plus great range of motion in the knees. Also if you have poor thoracic mobilty it fixes that fast.

They’re going to load the patellar tendon a bit more than back squats. I recommend using them as a progression from front squats, or doing them with partial ROM if using it early in the recovery process

Progress it til you can do it on a higher box than what your vertical and then start working on box jumps

Used to train only with big weight for 2 month (no plyo, sometimes played basketball). Now I want to reduce force trainings and start doing more pliometrics and isometrics. How often should I do them and should I change their variations after time? Is 1 heavy-lift training per week enough?

Yo so Im a teenager who has had Osgood Schlatters for a couple of years. I also seem to have pretty weak tendons (in the knee). Does the fact that I have Osgood Schlatters mean that I should keep my work load (6 practices and 2 physio a week, and I tend to exercise til my knees are about 5-7 pain usually) and just add these exercises or should I shorten the work load a bit? Seeing that you had Osgood Schlatters around my age and now say that you have no pain convinces me that you know what you’re doing. Btw keep up the good content 💪

just a quick question I would want to know what you would say is the best thing that you can do when you have a muscular imbalance between your legs, and your left leg is strong and you don't experience knee pain. But your right leg is very weak and experiences lots of knee pain even when sitting in a static position.

I've had the opposite problem. Strong leg with pain. I find that if I train each leg separately I can do a set to muscular failure on my weak leg and then match the reps with my strong leg focusing on how I am moving. If you work like this it will balance you legs by not pushing you strong leg too far ahead of your weak leg.

For doing isos 3x a day does it matter what variation for each time? For example in the morning do the one where you put ur hands over ur shin and then later do a leg extension machine and then later do a reverse Nordic one like does it matter which ones you choose or no?

Nope, as long as they’re providing relief. It’s also possible that have different positions that cause pain which can be addressed by doing ISOs in different positions

Turns out I got patellar tendinitis and some knee pain, as I didn’t play since 2020 and gained +20 lbs. Do you recommend this stuff for inactivity and loss of some strength / added weight too?

how many time a week should I do slow squats and should I do them on the same day I do heavy or explosive squats

2-3 times per week, and it’s only for tendon rehab. If you’re healthy you don’t have to do them

Have been watching you a long time, following workouts, admiring dunk sessions. My question is, I'm a high school basketball player, have practice every single day, squeezing in upper body twice and lower body workouts twice a week, everytime I have a longer jump session, or dunk on the hoop, jumper's knee comes back, only on right knee, left one feels great during half pistol squat, right one is killing me at one moment halfway through a half pistol squat, or step downs

You’re in survival mode until the season ends. Just do ISOs and slow strength until the season ends and then use that time to progress up the sessions

@@IsaiahRivera1 Okay, one more thing, I noticed that lifting 5x5 is pretty hard on the knees too, should I change the weightlifting for strength, to more of a hypertrophy and doing 4x8-12 And also, would you suggest taking suplements besides creatine

Is there an optimal weight range for jumping? I know your 6’2” about 178. I wonder what optimal weight ranges there are for jumping based on height because ik a few pounds makes a big difference on repeated landings.

Everyone is built and jumps different. Some people are heavy for their height but jump high and some people are skinny and jump high.

You only need about 6-8 seconds 6-8 reps. I’ve increased my bench and squat 75 lbs in three weeks

Likely muscle fatigue is playing a role here. If you take a week and lift lighter or even rest from lifting completely you'll feel the explosiveness come back.
