This is a common question - Do you need to take antibiotics when you go to the dentist after a total joint? This is an ongoing debate/discussion between dentists and surgeons. Here I will try to give you information about the recommendations. The important discussion should be made between you and your doctors as each patient is different.

I've had a knee replacement in both knees. I'm in good health, but I wouldn't take the the chance of possibly risking an infection from having dental work. It's just easier to take the antibiotics one hour before dental work.

I didn’t have antibiotics before dental extraction and came down with serious infection and almost died after the extraction. Thank you Dr Rosen for your video. I do have diabetes too!

I had my left TKR in Mar 2023. My orthopedist asked me to take antibiotics before any dental work until Mar 2025.

Excellent review. Retired Infection Control RN and I have ridden the same roller coaster on the necessity of ATB’s for dental procedures.

My surgeon stated thwy had a patient this year get an infection that was shown to come from the mouth in their knee 3 years post op. Crazy

My doc has prescribed an antibiotic for me when I go to the dentist. Some dental assistant will ask me if I am on an antibiotic and I will say yes. So prior to my appt, I will get a reminder to take my antibiotic before I arrive at my dental appt. After a scare of my second knee surgery 9 weeks after my first surgery because it was believed I had a knee infection and it had to be cleaned. One lab report showed infection and another lab report show no infection. I think it was the mechanism malfunction and cause me the suppose infection I had. I am glad to take those antibiotics to prevent an infection. That was not fun and I am still in recovering from this second surgery.

My dentist is quite diligent in asking if I have premedicated and always has it on hand lest I forget.

From a different perspective, what are your thoughts about going to the dentist for a routine cleaning in the time before TKA? Any suggestions for how long after a dental visit to wait before TKA?

So i had a knee replacement like over 10 yrs ago, im 50 now.. Just had a deep cleaning on my teeth like 3 weeks ago.. I woke up Tuesday with pain so bad in my knee it felt like i literally just had knee surgery, i havent hurt like that in YEARS. Started racking my brain to why i was hurting and swelling up like that and remembered the dental thing.. So i made an appointment with my orthopedic surgeon and they got me in this morning, i just had to have fluid pulled off my knee in 2 places to be tested for possible infection.. she asked me if the dentist put me on any antibiotics and i said on the 2nd half after i started complaining my jaw and ear was hurting after.. Im praying its not infection because that means going back into surgery on my knee.. I find out my test results Monday..

My Orthopedic surgeon would have a duck if I didn’t take a antibiotic before procedure!

Who knew that mouth bacteria was so powerful! I will take antibiotics before dental visits after my surgery (in 60 days), even though I have good dental hygiene, not a fan of antibiotics but 2 x times a year I can handle. I will however need to keep my dog from giving me kisses and licks because she does not have such good dental hygiene. It’s just stunning that it’s mouth bacteria that is so bad and can cause such awful infections. One would think that there are dirtier places!!! Thank you so much Dr. Rosen for all of your videos. I am feeling quite prepared for my May 25 surgery. It may be will be the hardest thing I’ve done since quitting smoking over 30 years ago.😅

Antibiotics are not without risk themselves, including side effects. Emerging resistant bacteria notwithstanding the bugs in one's mouth may be resistant to your chosen prophylactic Antibiotic choice.

Two great points we discuss in our world. Antibiotic stewardship to prevent the emergence of antibiotic resistance is a concern. And choosing the right or best antibiotic is always important. Both are things that are discussed and debated at our meetings.

@Dr. Adam Rosen -Total Knee Information & Exercises 😊 I am a UK medic (family medicine) and just had a TKR 4 mths ago. I've watched most of your videos and found them very helpful. So thank you! My physical therapist says I am recovering ahead of the curve. I am a fit 66yr old. I have done the rehab well and diligently. Now enjoying a new lease of life. The knee is awesome. Pretty much back to full activity.

Dentist dint give me anitbiotics. I got knee infection I have wire in my mouth. fromTMJ. Dentist had hard time pulling my tooth. I am very upset I didn’t get antibiotics. I thought the dr gave it tome. I am now on third knee surgery going to fourth hopefully. I am fighting for my life and leg. Sad sad that is could have been prevented. I told the dentist ALWAYS give me antibiotics!!!!

@@michaelball760 I just had my total knee replacement a year ago may 2023. Had two dental appointments this year without antibiotics may 13th and June 25th. Now I'm scared to death I will get infected to😅😅o

@debkinney3589 my surgery was may of 2023 also. Now I'm hearing teeth ckeanings you dont need them, only dental procedures like tooth removal, root canals etc. But different doctors will tell you different opinions

@@michaelball760 I had a tooth drilled and filled plus a cleaning on May 13...and crown prep which was more drilling on June 25th. After I talked to my orthopedics nurse I am scared. She made it sound so serious that I should have taken the antibiotic before. 😢

Had hip surgery last Nivember was not allowed to see dentist for 3 months after surgery.at that time my surgeon said go to dentist and gave me antibiotic to take 1 hr before visit. NOW WHO KNOWS???
