Plantar fasciitis is by far the most common cause of arch pain in runners.
Not surprisingly, most runners who get heel pain or arch pain think they have plantar fasciitis.
But sometimes runners have a more serious injury where there is actually a rip, a tear or what doctors referred to as a partial rupture of the plantar fascia ligament.
The problem with this more serious injury is that it doesn't get better with the same treatments that will help plantar fasciitis.
This video by Dr. Christopher Segler talks about the top 3 clues of a plantar fascia rupture in a runner.

Wish I would have seen this months ago. :-| My doc was insisting it was just fasciitis, even though it started gradual but the real issues was a sudden onset. Guess what, it was a tear that could have been solved months ago instead of me continuing to sport. Appreciate your video!

Thanks for this video! I’ve been trying to find an explanation for my severe sharp tearing or ripping pain in the arch of my foot. It doesn’t always hurt but when it’s triggered it won’t stop until I get off my feet. My mother has plantar fasciitis and I asked what her symptoms were she said they were standard gradual heel pain and is the worst in the morning. I explained to her that it is nothing like what I experienced. I’ve torn my shoulder and ruptured my lower lumbar disc causing severe sciatica but this might be the most excruciating pain I’ve experienced. I wasn’t sure exactly what it could be because with some research I couldn’t find answers. I came to a conclusion that it had to be something regarding the ligaments or nerves in my foot but ruled out nerves because it felt different than nerve pain, but seemed similar to when I torn the ligaments in my shoulder. I spoke to my doctor about it and without a second thought he diagnosed me with plantar fasciitis, but I feel as though a second opinion is needed.

Hey Adam, Thank you for watching and for sharing your experience with others. A second opinion is always a great idea! f you need help figuring it out, I can offer two great options: The Runner’s Heel Pain Course covers how runners can use the approach I would use if I were sitting in your living room, when all the is needed is to do their own self-diagnosis and self-treatment. runnersheelpain.docontherun.com/order-form That may be a better option that sitting around waiting weeks or months to see another doctor, while you just lose all of your fitness waiting. If you prefer to meet and discuss with me personally, we could get on a webcam call or phone call today or tomorrow to help you figure out what you should be doing NOW to make sure you don't keep losing all of your fitness. If so, you can pick a time that works for you and block my calendar for a private call here: www.docontherun.com/talk-to-the-expert/

Just came across your video. My injury is left foot, happened during muay thai training warm-up. Hopping on left leg, came down and I couldn't hop on my left leg anymore. I knew something was off immediately because it changed my mood. It also didn't help that my job I'm constantly walking in safety toe work boots during my 12 hours shifts

I have a sharp pain exactly on my heel, and it started the day after some more intensive lifting and running exercises. The position suggests it is at the base of my achilles tendon, where it meets the bone, and my motion is inhibited. Any movement past 90 degrees (between toes and shin) will feel like I am tearing it, it is a sharp pain in a very limited area at the center of the back of the heel. But if I do not go past that angle, there is no pain. So, I have to figuratively tip toe any where near that danger zone. I am trying to stay off of it, as I have office work, it is not too difficult to rest the foot during working hours, and am eating plenty of proteins. It has been three days, and is heeling slowly. What would be great is a strap for my leg / foot that prevented pushing past that 90 degree angle. Any tips on healing would be appreciated !

Thanks for the info @docontherun…question for you, I’m awaiting an MRI in a couple days (X-Ray was negative). If I heard/felt a “pop” noise underneath my foot arch, is that indicative of a rupture?
@DocOnTheRun

Thank you for watching! I have no idea based on that amount of information whether or not it might be indicative of a rupture, or something else Of course, we could get on a call and discuss in detail if needed.

I ripped mine 6 months ago just behind my mid toes. Definitely the arch is affected. I tried three sessions of prolotherapy which has helped but not an overall cure. I already have flat feet hence the prolotherapy. But your insight into this problem is great doctor. I think tears are more common and undiagnosed than is thought.

Any tips for shin splints? My PF in my left foot is slowly getting better (been 6 months) and it isn’t nearly as bad as when I first got it cause I have been stretching and strength training like crazy!!! I have shin pain in only my right leg which is the opposite leg and I think it is because it was compensating for the PF in my left foot. I have a 50k in April I am going to walk/jog but don’t want to make my pain worse after this long journey.

Thanks for the video! Do you recommend a boot for a tear in the planter fascia? If so, does it need to be on constantly, even when stepping to the bathroom at night, for instance? also, any recommendations for a well made even-up that doesn’t pull the shoe off, thus creating more imbalance and pain? Thanks again!
@DocOnTheRun

The treatment recommendations all depends on the circumstances and the specific goals of the runner.

This sounds like what I am dealing with. A couple years ago while skateboarding, during a push with my right foot a sudden pain shot up my arch and I had to stop. It carried on into normal walking and gives me trouble every now and again. I started skating again after 2 years and I’ve been fine (while skating) up until today where I was just dealing with the pain shooting up again. I’ve had it at work a couple of times cause at work I walk around a ton. I really need a fix for this

@@slomotzn8 mine was painful asf. Like the next day I couldn’t even walk or put weight on it. So if it just happened and you can walk on it it’s probably not this or it could be a minor injury.
