I am not going to rank anything, but I have to say that I think that it's great to see so many people giving Christopher Eccleston love. He was the first doctor that I was really introduced with, and if it wasn't for his portrayal, I wouldn't have become a fan. Fantastic!

Christopher is my second favorite. I loved how he showed the side of the doctor who is truly devastated after the war. He had great chemistry with Rose, and had a amazingly human feel that helped you empathize with him.

Love Eccleston, too bad he didn't want to be associated with Doctor who after his appearance. Also 6th doctor needs more Love. Colin Baker tried to portray himself as a darker doctor but executives meddled so much into this, it fudged everything up. If it had been handled differently, the 6 would have been more like 9. It is so upsetting. Great talented actor too.

I love Eccleston. He’s my 5th favourite. My favourite was Tennant (my childhood Doctor), and my second is Tom Baker (my dad’s childhood Doctor). Smith, Capaldi, then Eccleston. Pertwee, Davison, Troughton, McCoy, Hartnell, Paul McGann, and finally, Colin Baker.

William Hartnel was 56 when he started Dr Who. He went Senile when he was 59. His entire last season was performed while suffering from senility. With his daughter as a prompter. At that point all he barely remembered Was Dr who. HE was a war veterin. A long term commedian and a genuinely kind man. That sparkle in his eyes in later seasons was cause he was turning into a child again and struggled to remember who he was. Plus no doubt always reading off a prompter. Hartnell was a hero. And to me should always be Dr no One

This is only vaguely true. Firstly, he was 55 when he started Doctor Who, and already experiencing the first signs of bad health that would plague his later years. He didn’t go “senile” (I assume you actually mean that he suffered from dementia) during the run of the show, and didn’t have his daughter as a prompter, but found the show’s almost-all-year-round filming schedule exhausting due to developing arteriosclerosis by 1965, and always struggled with committing scripts to memory anyway, especially given that Doctor Who’s scripts were very dialogue-heavy. He died following a series of strokes in 1975 at the age of 67, and only had to read lines off cue cards for filming “The Three Doctors” in 1972, by which point he was very much in decline, hence why he only appears on pre-filmed inserts rather than in person alongside Troughton and Pertwee, in part because by then he was barely able to walk. He wasn’t a comedian and never described himself as such, preferring the term “legitimate actor”, and he wasn’t a “genuinely kind man” going on the recollections of cast and crew of him being quite difficult to work with and holding some very... shall we say OLD-FASHIONED views. But he was a talented actor, and gave his all to the show, never once treating it as anything inconsequential or not serious.

At the beginning, when you were talking about how great it is that everyone can have their own Doctor and everyone's opinions are valid etc, I thought, "Oh no, he's gonna say something bad about Tennant." hahahahahaha Seriously though, I can take it. ;) Ten will always be my Doctor, no matter what anyone else says!! Twelve is a very, very close second--I agree wholeheartedly that his growth/change just *works* and I just lost it during his "because it's kind" speech. (Also, despite Ten being my Doctor, The Husbands of River Song is far and away my favorite Christmas episode; the interactions between Capaldi and Kingston are magical.)

Capaldi's character arc is one of my favourites of all the Doctors. Series 8 represents his inner insecurities, of someone trying to figure themselves out; Series 9 represents, as you said, the mid-life crisis; and Series 10 represents retirement, he's settled down and fully accepted who he is and now tries to teach others his ways. Beautiful.

You've now incepted the idea into my head cannon that the 5th Doctor is actually a sociopath who knows based off of his past regenerations and upbringing what is right and therefore does his best to upkeep it, but feels nothing and goes through the motions to try to reawaken his emotional responses. This would make his self sacrifice for Peri really interesting; he was tired of the constant void and ready to move on to a different, hopefully more feeling regeneration. And he did; it just didn't land quite as well as he hoped.

Now that I think about it, the Classic Who doctors (apart from maybe Patrick Troughton) are all quite dark in the same way that you're bringing up. 1st manipulates his companions, 2nd makes a habit of putting himself in danger to make him not look like a threat, 3rd is overall very detached to the human world he's shoved into, and 4th is the same but more enthusiastic, 5th you already talked about, 6th doesn't NEED to be talked about, and 7th is your textbook Machiavellian. The first to really change was #8... Did the Time War change him more than we thought?

I’m happy that Matt Smith is my doctor. I grew up with him on my screen (yes I’m young). I remember the end of tennant but Matt Smith was my doctor. I’m happy about that because it means I ignore people’s criticism and I can’t really change my mind about him because I have too much of a fondness for him and his character. This is good because I can enjoy his tenure more than people who viewed it with a critical knowing eye with beautiful ignorant bliss.

He had his moments (I'm never going to unhear him telling Susan she needed a "jolly good smacked bottom" in the beginning of The Dalek Invasion of Earth), but there was just something so likable about him regardless. Capaldi, for me, was the greatest thing to happen to the show. Some might say Tom Baker, and I understand. Capaldi, was, by no definition, my first Doctor. In every permutation and combination, he was the last I was introduced to. He, however, brought something to the character I had only experienced in small doses. A ferocity and honesty surpassing most iterations of the character. The arrogance of Hartnell and Colin Baker, the unapologetic eccentricity of Troughton, the undeniable sassiness of Pertwee, Smith's faith, Tennant's stubbornness, the guilt of Eccleston, the burden of Hurt, the optimism of McGann, the likability of Davison and the curiosity of McCoy, the charm of Tom Baker.

capaldi is the first doctor i was introduced to this year when my friend got me into the show, and i agree he has so many traits of all the past doctors in his portrayal, and in my opinion at times he's giving a master's class in acting in his performances because he always seems to know what part of his doctor or what emotion to emphasize at any given moment intuitively... he's crotchety a bit at times but its muted and understated and playful whilst recalling elements of the first doctor.. he's honest passionate helpful caring and kind. when other parts of his character lead him to stray from that he corrects himself or gets corrected by clara, who is almost like his mirror in many ways, her own person but so much like him in some respects its uncanny like looking in a mirror. i forgot who said this i think it was moffat but the line went something like how it was easy to believe that the young-old matt smith would regenerate into the old but young peter capaldi. i agree. he seems old on the surface and seems hardened a bit like the war doctor and tennant and eccleston all were, but he still has playfulness like tom baker and matt smith too. he still knows in his heart what it really means to be truly alive. he still has hope faith love and joy and playfullness in his heart. there is also an intangible quality to peter capaldi's portrayal that i don't see or feel or get from any of the other doctor's not even from smith. i can't really name it or put a finger on it but it's there. also capaldi seems a lot like smith but alot less fragmented and more stable then smith's doctor was at times personality wise capaldi came along at a perfect time....following matt smith, travelling with clara, interacting with Missy. everything aligned perfectly in alot of ways to help enhance and support capaldis portrayal and enable him to play the doctor the way he did. smith's childishness and eccentricity helped people accept capaldi more then they would have otherwise and broke the ice and laid the ground work for him, travelling with clara provided a bridge adn contuity and helped people see capaldi wasnt all that different from past doctors and helped people draw parrallels with smith's doctor yet seeing he was his own doctor also, clara provided both a counterbalance and a kindred spirit and put the doctor in the position of occasionally having to reign her in when she became too much like him and try to explain to her the dangers that went with that, a position he was surprised to find himself in and a bit uncomfortable with as usually the companions reign him in not the other way around....,, and Missy despite being an enemy was a friend to him someone who he could relate to someone else who had seen and done it all already someone he could cautiously talk to about just about anything, he was getting tired of being the doctor and being a time lord and forced to live so long and growing weary, and Missy understood him in a way even Clara couldnt sometimes. also capaldi's time on the show made the show seem legitimate and like a real show, like a historical piece or period drama with science fiction elements where by contrast eccleston's run those epsiodes they sometimes seemed like no one figured out what to do with the show or make of it yet adn sometimes those episodes feel too campy like how can the audience be expected to take this seriously as a show. yet you can still draw parrallels beteween capaldi's doctor and all of the new who doctors so far, he somehow ties it all up together at various times in various ways. he's believable that all of what happened to this point still lives on through and within him and has brought us to capaldi's doctor. and i think its great that he's playing with the first doctor in the special as some of 12 harkens back to the 1st i think.

I find it funny that my reason for Tennant being my fave (outside of him simply being my first doctor) is the same reason you have him at 6, he's too human. For me Tennant's run encapsulated what I love about Superman, he's this being with great power and yet all he wants it to fit in, to be human. Tennant's run was all about that struggle, coming off the back of the time war 9 had met Rose, someone who had begun to ground him to Earth; and when he regenerated I always felt like Rose influenced what he became after the regeneration. He made Earth his new home, he always felt like he wanted to be human. But as his run went on, he began to realise that he wasn't human; not even close. I always saw the moment he finally realised this was during "The War of Mars", as we see him try and fight time and change history. In that moment, as he was walking away he snapped; he lost his humanity and went full Time lord. I always felt like that progression was so fun to watch and really drew me to his character. It's not all i love about Tennant's run, but it's one of the biggest parts of it.

Peter Davison sold me as my favorite Classic in his last episode, the Caves of Adrozani (or something). All his longtime companions had just died or left him, and now this new rookie girl shows up and asks to travel. He reluctantly accepts. Not to long after, they are both poisoned, and the Doctor is doing everything he can just to get an antidote, and in the last episode he struggles "I got Peri into this mess, and I've got to get her out of it". He died yo save a life he barely knew, and I guess it's the same reason you love McGann.

I hate Tennant's doctor. He's so whiny and his flavor of arrogance rubs me the wrong way. Especially towards the end of his run. The very first episode I saw of Doctor Who was Weeping Angels. Loved that episode, and Tennant towards the beginning of his run, but he began to become super annoying to me and strangely obsessed with Rose (who I also did not like). So far of the doctors' whose runs I have completed, he's the only one whose entire run I do not love.

He is so whiny and bitchy that everyone feels sorry for him, I couldn't give a crap about him, the one thing that made the doctor the doctor was not that he whines and he complains that "It's not fair!" when he regenerates just pisses me off even more.

I've only seen New Who, so I've only got 5 Doctors to rank, but here they are: 5. John Hurt - I love him as an actor, but we only got one episode with him, and the episode was really more focused on Tennant and Smith. 4. David Tennant - Before everyone attacks, I absolutely adore him, and I love the way he plays the Doctor. I guess when it comes down to it, I just love the others more. 3. Christopher Eccleston - What can I say? He had me at "Run." He was my first Doctor, and even though he only got one season, he definitely made the most of it. He has some of my favourite lines and moments, and if anyone can get me addicted to a show about time travel and aliens, it's him. 2. Matt Smith - Up until recently, he was my number one. I just love everything about him, how quirky and fun he is, and it definitely helps that I love the Ponds, and that River Song is one of my favourite characters. He was just so much fun. 1. Peter Capaldi - This surprised me. For one thing, it took me a couple of episodes to really start to like him. I think I accepted him as the Doctor somewhere around "I am the Doctor, and THIS IS MY SPOON." And he just kept getting better. Like you said, he's a total rockstar, and he was so good. I'm sad to see him go.

That actually happens to me to a certain degree. With the exception of Colin Baker (who I've yet to find a story where he worked for me) I find myself really loving the heck out of each Doctor as I'm watching them. And for the length of whatever story I'm watching, they will be my favorite Doctor. That's part of what makes it hard to step back from it and make a list like this.

Matt Smith is my Doctor and he's still my favourite. Capaldi comes in second, really only hampered by Matt Smith being just before him and him not really clicking with me in his first season (though that's better on the rewatch). Eccleston will always have a special place in my heart for being my first Doctor and I do really love him (he's fantastic!) but he's still at the bottom of my current list (I wish he'd had more seasons). David Tennant might not be my favourite Doctor (coming in third) but he is my favourite actor who has played the Doctor (so that's something). We'll see how my rankings change when I get more into classic who (just started) and catch up with Jodie Whittaker.

My New Who Doctors Ranked 01 David Tennant i get that he is a little too human but i just love the amount of effort and emotion he puts into his role. i love the 'the man who regrets' vibe that he uses towards the end of his run, especially in 'the waters of mars' and i love the way he ises comedy, with the happy smile and constantly mixing numbers with letters. 02 Jodie Whittaker i fell in love with this doctor when she made a quick two minuite video addresing the coronavirus, and she completely ownes her role as the doctor and it made me want to bine watch all of her episodes, which i did, and found that she uses the part of this doctor i love in alot of her performance, her way the doctor goes with the flow, and how subtly she uses humour. 03 Matt Smith i like matts performance, but something about it is just off for me, and i dont know what it is, i love the abnormality he brings to his role and i love how he is so happy about things, but because he is so very happy, i dont take it seriously when this version of the doctor gets angry or sad, and it doesnt really make me feel bad or sorry for him. 04 Christopher Eccleston it pains me to put him so low, but like matt smith, something about the way he plays the doctor doesnt sit right with me, and i dont know what, but i still really like this doctor. he is the opposite of smith, he is too dark in his series, that i feel when he uses comedy its too forced. 05 Peter Capaldi i really love this doctor towards the end of his run, but it took a while for me to adjust to him, maybe because in contrast with smith, he was alot more grumy, so it felt weird that he was so grumpy, if you follow after smith, the happiest doctor in new who so far, the performance shouldnt be so grumpy. 06 Jo Martin i would put her higher, if she didnt have so little time on the show. she did a fantastic performance, however i need more time to see her, and i love her chemistry with whittaker. 07 Dreamlord Toby Jones gave a brilliant performance as the dark manifestation, but as he isnt really counted as a doctor, aswell as his little time on the show, it would be silly to put him any higher than here. 08 John Hurt it also pains me to put john so low as well, but something about his performance just didnt work for me. i would love to see him come back, it is so unfortunate he is no longer with us.

I feel bad because I'm obviously in the presence of some major Whovian Geeks here while I've only seen New Who, but ranking the new ones is pretty easy for me so here goes: 5. Hurt- He's only at the bottom because I feel there's not enough in the performance. John Hurt didn't give me anything. His performance was lacking in character that the writing tried so desperately to give him and he didn't come across as being a real person, alien or not. I thought he was serviceable, but I wish they could have brought back Eccleston for Day of the Doctor instead. 4. Capaldi- I love the love that obviously went into his character but it's so inconsistent. Part of that is what his character is: hypocritical, world weary, developing, and a combination of the Doctor's that came before him including the Classics. But the inconsistency constantly makes me feel like I don't know him. I know he learned a lot, and I loved his development and change which is something not all the Doctor's do, but Moffat didn't seem like he could make him feel like one character. Not Capaldi's fault on this one, just the writing and the fan's influence after Smith left. 3. Eccleston- Mind blowing what he did with this character. I agree with the video in that I totally was magnetized towards him as soon as he came on screen. Everything he does is mysterious and yet you feel like you know him. His relationship to Rose is perfect and I wish we'd gotten more episodes out of him, especially as how he relates to the Time War. He also deserved to be the War Doctor. 2. Smith- This chat is mostly anti-Smith, but I understand the direction they came from after Tennant's exit from the show. They needed someone loveable, marketable, and alien, but with enough darkness in him to make you think he's just a little crazy. Smith put so much soul into his performance that was desperately needed, and he brought a whole bunch of new fans to Doctor Who. 1. Tennant- We have a phrase in my household that we toss around jokingly all the time: "There are two kinds of people in this world; those who think David Tennant is the best Doctor, and those who are wrong." Obviously that's meant in a joking manner, but that gives you the kind of way I relate to Tennant. My family would gather around the tv and hang out with this crazy man from the stars and see his journey as he learned and developed like a real person. We all loved episodes where he felt challenged like Midnight, Silence in the Library, and the Waters of Mars, went "Ohhh" when he was clever, laughed when he made jokes, and cried when he regenerated. David Tennant's Doctor brought my family closer together, because we could all love him. On a more objective note, he was able to play quirky without pushing it too far. I think the video got quirky and alien confused. The Doctor really looked down on some people during Tennant's era while sympathizing with them. He loved people, but he really felt above them in many ways. While I prefer Moffat's writing to Davies, Tennant was able to shine through to the very end. That's why he's 'my Doctor' as many would say.

I predict once you listen to Big Finish Colin Baker will not be in your bottom spot (at least no longer a bad Doctor). I recommend doing the run with Evelyn Smythe starting with the very early Monthly range stuff as it's the natural development of softening six in the way the tv show would have done had Colin not been fired because JNT didn't know how to run the show.

Spectrum Storms this is why I love these lists, they are just so wildly different! I definitely get why people don’t like Matt smith, although I wonder if when you say he got worse as time went on you mean his scripts did or his performance and characterisation or both? And when you list Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy as your fave, is that influenced by the post tv show books and plays? Or do you genuinely like that TV era? I was basing my list on the TV show and whilst I can see the potential in those characterisations I find it hard to see much to enjoy in 6 in particular.

His portrayal got worse. By the end of his era, Eleven was too quirky, too hyper, and too over the top (and the scripts didn't help either). I'll describe him as "all style, no substance".

I appreciate your list, but I firmly disagree about Smith and Tennant. So I love Tennant, as many people do, and I will address your point about alienness but first: Tennant was in my opinion the most consistently well acted and well characterized doctor (of the new series I haven't seen much of the old). He was always funny, always romantic, but I never thought that his anger was a totally unbelievable shift in emotion. Matt Smith was so affable and happy in the beginning that when he got dark for important moments I didn't really believe him. He acted well but the character felt inconsistent. When Tennant was dark it was both scarier but also when he wasn't being dark I could see that he could shift, so the darkness never felt out of character. Tennant also was just a better actor in my opinion. That's personal and I can't really try to convince you of that but it is a valid feeling. Also Tennant's ark as a character where he was trying to get over the Eccleston PTSD but also still had it in him, made him--for me--the most interesting character, since he was the most conflicted, at least I thought. He was also the funnier to me since it didn't go as overboard as Smith did. Finally to address the idea of alienness. For me Smith didn't read as alien he just read as quirky--too quirky. It got tiresome after a certain amount of time. I was just like "get over the bowtie joke already" you know. His quirks got beaten to death, and run into the ground. Tennant's alienness was downplayed comparatively but I'd argue it's there. In the water's of mars he he feels very much like an alien who doesn't understand how humans conceptualize life, i.e. he begins to forget how the human views the world, and starts to get to the point of looking down on people. It's dark and ultimately he realizes it and in the end of time decides to save Wilfred and fight his own ego, but it's present. Another--less dark way--in which he feels alien, is his relationship to the ood. The companions that interact with them usually have a moral crisis about it, but he doesn't feel that uncomfortable with it at first just because he understands all of space and time. Also he is alien in his constant and failed attempts at explaining things that we cannot fathom--like "wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff". I think the problem is that compared to matt smith his alien side is much smaller--and I understand that being a problem, and you may not think he is as good--but alien is definitely present in him and it is worth thinking about that. The other thing is that his alienness is often about him as an outsider falling in love with the idea of the human race, rather than being kind-of distant. All the doctor's love humans, but Tennant is particularly moved in that way. Anyway, I hope this at least complicated the idea of Tennant for you and made you think of him slightly differently. I enjoy your videos, keep it up. :)

I admit that I prefer 11 more than 10, but it's not for the alien versus non-alien qualities. tho, I did like smith's more alien approach overall, bc sometimes 10 acted like an angsty teenager. I liked 11 better bc he was more consistent to me actually, and 10 was just way too inconsistent. and when I say inconsistent, I don't mean in tone. I'm fine with both doctors shifts in tone from light to dark. they are both great actors, objectively speaking. the only way that anyone could think smith was bad is if they wanted to see him that way. however, 11 had a dark side in quite a few times in his early run, from him shouting at everyone in the beast below, to hitting the dalek in victory of the dalek, to his venomous tone sometimes when dealing with the angels in flesh and stone, etc. the darkness was always there; people just didn't notice it. what I mean with consistency on what 'the doctor is' and 'does he always keep the rules the same for everyone' and 'is he emotionally independent/has his own identity outside of his companions', which are all things the doctor should have. also does he always say one thing and do that thing, or does he say one thing and do another. 10 seemed too human in the way that he didn't always seem to know what he was, like we humans do. he was just played by an actor who knew how to play him well and make him lovable. but I respect ur opinion and each to his own.

I'd like to add that the humanity of 10 is by design. He wanted to be someone who could be with Rose so off course he's more human because he wants to be. As far as being alien, with a man who has spent so much time with humans, something is bound to rub off so to speak.

First: I agree with you, Vikram Perry! Just more rambling going on here. I can't really compare Ten to the other Doctors, since I only watched a few Eleven and a few Twelve, and other than Ten only Nine got watched throughout. So, that's gotta come first - my explorations now come without comparison but from what I saw in Ten, and Ten alone. Now, because I saw that people get annoyed about big text, so: There's a LOT of text after this. Just don't read if you're not interested. I really like this character. Yes, he acts sometimes like a teenager. He's giddy and overly happy, but I agree with the idea that in a lot of times, it's an act. Where it's not an act, is when he steps out of the Tardis with Rose in The Idiot's Lantern - he's happy and giddy and wants to have a bit of fun-time with the girl he kinda is in love with. There are other instances, too - when they meet Queen Victoria, for example - but in a lot of times after Rose was gone, he acts in the age-old wisdom of "fake it 'till you make it"-fashion. When Martha asks him if he's fine after the sun burned him up in 42, he isn't but shakes it off to pretend he is. And he shakes off everything after "Human Nature", too. Maybe it's true, maybe he IS the most human - because as a human myself, I see the whole run of Ten as character-wise very consistent. I understand where he's coming from. He's RUNNING. All throughout, he's running. He's the most elated when he runs - FROM something or TO something - because it's motion, it's action, it's the opposite of standing still and thinking. He doesn't want to think, shoves thinking out of his way because even though we only really get to see it in Day of the Doctor, when it's clearly stated, *I* see him thinking about all that's happened before he met Rose. When the Doctor ended the Time War, he ended his entire species (he believes - and I actually would have liked it to be that way, but eh... so for Ten during his three seasons, he DID). He committed genocide - not as an accident, but willfully and deliberate. Not to just one species, but two. And one of that species was his own. He made the decision at the time to end the Time War and end everything, everyone on his planet, every timelord in existence. Considering that, I find it highly fitting that he runs and hops and skips through the world, chasing high after high just so he won't get low enough to actually think. But he knows, he remembers. He remembers the exact number of his own species' children he killed. Every life snuffed out. When he stands over the pit with those spider-babies (Runaway Bride) and just listens to their screams and their mother's pain, I bet he's hearing all the screams he'd caused before. And I bet he's thinking "why should I care about them?" If he's thinking at all - not completely sure there. He said "I used to have so much mercy". Somewhere along the way, his mercy got witted down to just enough to not be a complete bastard so that Donna can snap him out again. So yeah... maybe he is too human. But if that's something that sets him apart from the other Doctors, it doesn't really endear the others to me. If I don't understand their thinking, how can I relate to them? Hmmmm... I'd have to watch more episodes of Capaldi or Smith, maybe. What I wonder most about are people's complaints about Ten's end. Why are so many moaning that he doesn't want to die as the incarnation he was then? Why is it 'wrong' for the Doctor to cling to this form and this form's hard-earned emotions? Is it wrong for him to not want to do it all over again, have to re-assemble himself as a personality again? Why do people even call him "selfish" when he doesn't instantly go and rescue Wilfred? Is that what they mean about "not being alien enough"? He wasn't angry at Wilfred! He wasn't even angry at this moment - he'd kinda known he was gonna die. But with every other "knock 4 times" that happened along the way, he had action and grand things to achieve. Save the Master, stop the Timelords, etc. He was prepared to die in the Library, no hesitation on his part! He stood in front of the Daleks in Manhattan, gambling to survive but really... he could have just as easily died there. He didn't hesitate there. But the thing with this "death" was that it had been announced, that "his song" would end. Not that another song would start, but HIS song would end. So when he saw Wilfred in the box and heard the knock, it wasn't even an issue with him. He KNEW he was gonna save him. And not because he wanted to keep the high ground, but because that's what he'd do - maybe because Donna taught him, but he'd saved people long before that without prompting. And Wilfred wasn't even a stranger - he was a good man, he was DONNA'S grandfather, so important to her. Ten KNEW he was going to save him, he knew he was going to die there. His ranting about not wanting to - well, isnt that justified? "Rage against the dying of the light" - he'd quoted that before. It doesn't make a lick of difference to the outcome, he knew he was going to save Wilfred. There was literally no other choice he could make. The Ood knew already. They knew the kind of person he was. So what's the hangup about him giving one last run to himself? One moment of "imagine the highs I can still chase...." But ultimately, it had to end. He had to stop running. So yeah, I really don't understand how people are so angry about that. Let him rage a bit, let him ramble - he earned that.

The best part about this Doctor-ranking video (there are so many on the internet) is that you took the time to thoroughly explain your choices. Also, you have taken the time to watch a lot of classic Doctor Who. Every time I see a ranking that puts most or all of the Doctors from modern Doctor Who at the top of the list, I know that the reviewer has not watched enough of the classic series. Tom Baker belongs at the top of the list for the reasons you said and because he has a personal magnetism that allows him to own every scene he's in. Peter Capaldi is underrated as the Doctor, but he is actually one of the most-talented actors to ever play the role and his version of the Doctor was quite exceptional. I was happy to finally see a reviewer give Number 12 the credit he's due.

Tom Baker when interviewed admitted himself he stayed 1 series too long, but he was and is my favourite doctor, he was the entire time the consumate doctor, he realised the standing he has with his fans and the role model he was setting with the children who watched, he was never badly behaved in public, never drank alcohol in public, he gave all those years to his character on screen and off. He was a good doctor and is a really good man, with his age in mind i dont think it will be too many years before i shed a tear for my doctor.

Great video! Just recently subbed to your channel because of the Doctor Who content. Just as an aside, my favorite is probably Troughton, just because to me, he does the best at embodying the characteristics I believe the Doctor has (though, granted, I haven't seen much of Whittaker yet). Plus, as you said, a lot of the tropes of the show were introduced with him, and he nailed the performance at a time when the show was going through a significant change, so if it weren't for that, we might not have had the show we know now. I'd be interested to hear how your rankings change if and when you do decide to take Big Finish into account.

troughton was the first true doctor, if he didnt work, the show would not. And he started some basic ideas that has lasted through the entire show. The confusion after regeneration talking your way out rather than fighting strategic retreat, and you can sort of control your regeneration and you dont have to die to do it

I agree mostly with your list but I know he's the newest doctor but man Peter Capaldi if my favourite and I don't reaaally think that's going to change for a while because he just understands the doctor so perfectly I wish he had just one more season because I would have liked to see how he did with a new writer but I'm interested to see how it goes with Jodie I have a feeling I'll really like her but I just don't think she could understand the part as well as Peter did because he grew up with the show but I still think she'll be fantastic ;)

I can remember sitting down to watch the very first episode of Doctor Who in 1963 and I have watched every episode since. I have to agree with your number one choice. Tom Baker is Doctor Who at its best. Trying to put the rest into some sort of order would be a neigh on impossible task for me. I like your list but I think mine would be quite different should I ever attempt it.

Impressed you could make this list at all. If it were me, I'd just be like "Umm, 12-way tie for first?" On an unrelated note: One of the things I like about Matt Smith's Doctor: Sometimes he seems to be very young, and sometimes very old. I don't think any other Doctor has had that quality. I think it really works for this kind of character.

totally agree about Capaldi's Doctor. I absolutely LOVE how he was introduced as selfish and callous...and by the end of season 10, telling the Master..."it's just kind." speech. He evolved. Such an incredible realization in Witch's Familiar when child Davros asks "Which side of the war on you on?" and he responds "Doesn't matter which side...as long as there is mercy" Mercy...the difference between being the good guys and bad buys in the conflict. All other fronts...they are the same. Capaldi is #1 on my list. Tom Baker #2.

My list of the Doctors... 13. Paul McGann (only having one appearance hurts him) 12. Christopher Eccleston (I think if he had done more than one season, I would have warmed up to him) 11. Colin Baker (everything you said, but I'm allowing a slight bias from the Big Finish productions where he is my fav Doctor) 10. Jon Pertwee (I liked Pertwee, but being stuck on Earth hurt the stories) 9. John Hurt (Only one appearance hurts, but the episode was amazing and he was such an intriguing Doctor) 8. Sylvester McCoy (I loved his comedic timing) 7. Patrick Troughton (from Grumpy Grandpa into Fun Uncle and his relationship with Jaime) 6. Peter Davison (One of the most charming Doctors) 5. Matt Smith (Took me a season to get in, but eventually his stories really hooked me) 4. Tom Baker (How can you not like Tom Baker?) 3. William Hartnell (The Daleks, The Aztecs, The Gunfighters) 2. Peter Capaldi (Not only did you feel the alien, stranger in a strange land, but plenty of nostalgia beats) 1. David Tennant (New Earth hooked me and I hung on tight)

I flicked the channels one day and came across Smith and Jones and have been absolutely captivated ever since.

This is such a good list. I'm glad you recognize the essence of the Doctor -- that alien quality -- that most of those who came into the show during the David Tennant era usually miss. I became familiar with the show during the Sylvester McCoy era and between seasons they would show Jon Pertwee episodes. The Pertwee era really intrigued me. I loved it, but I had a hard figuring out how this was the same show. Then, Remembrance of the Daleks aired -- which seemed like it had a proto-UNIT story -- and things started falling into place. When Battlefield aired, I was ecstatic. With Pertwee, I loved how he barely seemed interested in the adventures and almost had to be dragged into them. (He was more interested in getting the TARDIS going again.) He was so condescending towards the humans -- especially the Brigadier -- yet it was hard not to blame him since he was so charming (and usually right). With Tennant, I wasn't getting any of that. Eccelston brought a lot of that arrogance back and I thought: This is the Doctor. I liked Tennant, but he didn't have the interesting alien persona that most of the other Doctors had. I watched this list when it came out, but your observations are so good that when it popped up again I couldn't shut it off. Great work!

13. William Hartnell. I find him a bit too grumpy lol 12: Colin Baker He had a few stories that were great but that outfit though. 11: John Hurt I think he was a bit rushed, it would have been better if he was used as a series ark would have been better. 10: John Pertwee He's great but the episodes were a bit eh. 9: Paul McGaun One movie and I think he should have had a regeneration scene in 2005 not in 2013 would have tied off a lot of loose ends. 8: Sylvester McCoy I liked his feel to his performance but he was a bit grumpy as well. 7: Patrick Troughton I liked the younger tone from Hartnell. So yeah. 6: Christopher Eccleston I'd have liked another series but I don't like him hating his role now 5: Peter Capaldi He's great. Fab just his first two seasons were a bit eh. But series 10 he had found his feet. 4: Peter Davison I like his tone to the doctor. Yeah that's it? 3: Tom Baker Yes. I love him 2: David Tennant I love his craziness but I like he can be serious. 1: MATT SMITH OH FISH FINGERS AND CUSTARD. I LOVE HIM

William Hartnell (I am only up to reign of terror, but I actually love that he is so abrasive) 4. David Tennant (the regeneration ruined him and Matt Smith) 3. Peter Capaldi- (possibly the best Doctor but his era was terrible) 2. I've never done this before... off the top of my head I think it's this. I honestly think all 13 actors are good actors - they've never cast it actively badly, but I know my list is VERY different to the norm - Hartnell and McCoy so high (McCoy was my first doctor and Hartnell for me is so different to the other, it's just brilliant for me); Troughton and Smith so low (for both my main issue is the writing rather than the actor - Season 5, such a popular season with lots of people, I find really really trying - so many bloated 6 parters, so many base under siege, every story just feels like the same story to me... and Series 6... I actually gave up on Doctor Who for the first time in my life, which I never thought I'd do - I went back to it and caught it all up again in advance of the 50th Anniversary.) 13. Matt Smith 12. John Hurt 11. Christopher Eccleston 10. Patrick Troughton 9. Paul McGann 8. Colin Baker 7. Peter Capaldi 6. Jon Pertwee 5. Peter Davison 4. Tom Baker 3. William Hartnell 2. Sylvester McCoy 1. As an older guy who almost remembers the first Dr (born 1961) but fell in love with the show with #2 Patrick Troughton I have a very different list of favorites than most here but unlike many of my generation I think Russell Davis was the best Dr Who producer and Moffatt the worst (even though he was a great writer under RD). Anyway here we go: (13) Sylvestor McCoy, (12) Peter Capaldi, (11) Colin Baker, (10) Matt Smith, (9) John Hurt, (8) Paul McGann, (7) Peter Davidson , (6) William Hartnell, (5) Christopher Ecclestone, (4) John Pertwee, (3) Patrick Troughton, (2) Tom Baker, (1) David Tennant. Peter Capaldi IS a good actor but the show is as dead to me as it was with show ending McCoy. For me only my top 7 choices are real Dr Who for me. The rest? Meh!

For me it's always Tom Baker, that scarf, that smile, that Alien Humanist -- Oh well perhaps -- Then There will always be Tennent -- Why? He was the romantic, the one who wanted to hope, to feel human, to be loved and to love, but that hurt and pain from his past. DT got me in the feels. I just met Capaldi at Boston Comic Con, and he was as lovely as he portrayed the doctor. His Kindness speach is probably for me is the best of his run (and others). I also have to give John Hurt some love. I loved how he interacted with Bad Wolf -- And recognized mid life crisis with both DT and Matt. I love the Doctor ---

I understand your reasoning for the omission of Big Finish but that does hamper McGann and Colin Baker a fair bit. If I were to recommend one story that might change your mind on the Sixth Doctor, it would be “The Marian Conspiracy”. An audio story available at only £2.99, it acts almost like a season opener, introducing the Doctor to a new companion Evelyn Smythe as they travel back to Queen Anne’s reign to stop a temporal problem (I can understand that monetary and inaccessibility can be an issue for people). Where to “start” with McGann has wide disagreements so I’ll leave that to you. Anyway I’d probably rank it (seen all episodes) Tennant - an incredibly likeable performance. Range from fun romps to darkness all done well Capaldi - Never gives a bad performance, I just wish some of the writing was sharper for him & maybe more consistency. Eccelstone - Grown to like but one series which is dated now, with one companion doesn’t let him demonstrate his range like top doctor needs to. What is there is great but not enough to go higher. Smith - some good moments but the writing especially Series 5 which has main themes I hate & Amy really drag him down) Hurt - Did a good job but one episode not focused on him in nowhere near enough range to rank him higher. For the Classics I have an understanding of (seen or heard multiple but not all the stories of these) McGann - So, so good in the role it is really tragic. When I get round to having the money for more of his audios, he might be one of if not my favourite. And such range, from early stuff with Charley to Time War antics all being fantastically engaging. C. Baker - Beneath the comedic and angry sides, there is just so much compassion and caring. Also haven’t listened to a bad pairing of him so far. Davidson - It isn’t a issue of talent but I feel like it takes a certain type of story to really resonate with this doctor, limiting my opinion of him. McCoy - Again, I feel like this might be the case of a brilliant concept for a Doctor that is problematic to write for. However I do look forward to listening to some stories that show me why those who love him are so passionate about his portrayal. I don’t have enough of an understanding of the first four Doctors to make an informed opinion of.
@Pippland
@Pippland 6 жыл бұрын
I think it's sort of overlooked how much good Big Finish has done for the Fifth Doctor when compared to the Sixth and Eighth Doctors. They give him much more presence in each story and Davison's older voice really lends to this "old man in a young man's body" performance that was never really emphasized onscreen, I think. Plus, there's been some truly fantastic writing for him - Spare Parts, Creatures of Beauty, The Council of Nicaea, Psychodrome and Iterations of I, The Peterloo Massacre, and so many more. I think they have consistently nailed the type of stories that really make his Doctor stand out. McCoy's brilliant in the audios, too. He and Sophie Aldred sound like they haven't aged a day in audio and most of their adventures with Hex starting with The Harvest are fantastic - especially Live 34! Colditz, A Thousand Tiny Wings, Survival of the Fittest, and The Architects of History are great too. Gotta agree with everything you said about McGann and Colin, though. I've made it a mission to never miss a new audio with Colin if I can help it!
