Swapping a 4.7 dodge Dakota engine into a dodge ram 1500.
The Dodge 4.7 is infamous for many internal engine problems and has a very high rate of failure. Because of this used 4.7s are quite expensive. 4.7s for the fullsize Ram 1500 are especially pricey. The Same engine can be found for less in the less desirable Dodge Dakota, dodge Durango, and jeep grand Cherokee.
Full List of parts that must be swapped:
-fuel injectors
-motor mounts
-block plate
-oil pan
-pickup tube
-oil pan gasket/windage tray
-intake plenum
-dipstick tube
-dipstick
-radiator fan and clutch
-passenger exhaust manifold
-dowel pins
-PCV tubes

By 05 they fixed the oil sludge and cylinder wall problems. 08-13 went to dual spark plug, and Electronic throttle body so it’s be difficult to swap into an 07’ and below model. The 4.7 isn’t bad in the Dakota, it just wasn’t enough engine for the Ram and overstressed due to the weight of the Ram and the heavier loads. I got 89,000 miles with my ‘06 Dakota, other than a small exhaust manifold leak still runs great with regular maintenance.

The problems that the 4.7 has is primarily due to too thanks. Not changing the oil often enough, and not making sure the oil gets clean before you change it. Which can be done by putting a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil in it about a week before you're going to do the oil change and driving it normally. It keeps all of that Damage Done by the blow by from occurring to the interior of the engine. Especially the hydraulic valve lash adjusters they get plugged up with the sludge. It doesn't hurt to use good oil either. Furthermore, all of the engines are interchangeable. However if you can get ahold of an engine from about a 2006 or 7 and newer they have better cylinder heads on them. But you will have to change that reluctor wheel or change the system to be able to use the newer reluctor wheel. But there is no difference between the engine that's in a Dakota or one that's in a ram truck, or one that's in a jeep. The engine is quite a good engine if you understand it. If you had taken the time to go to the yard and pick up camshafts from an engine from like 08 and the larger intake manifold. You'd have an engine putting out about 340 horsepower or thereabouts. If you took the time to add a set of headers to the engine. And it would put out a heck of a lot more torque. $1,300 is a pretty good price for that engine.

Most of those parts you replaced are interchangeable. Part numbers are the same. The oil pan and dipstick tube are the biggest difference really. Save some time, effort and 4.7 swears. Great video!

I just paid $ 3200 for a remanufactured engine for my 2005 ram 1500 4.7. All transactions were handled by the mechanic. I noticed that the power steering pump in the new setup is different. The fluid reservoir sits at about a 30 degree angle ( and the pump is whining). The reservoir from the original engine mounted with the cap upright not at an angle. Can you tell me if a different model remanufactured engine was installed ? The oil filter also seems to be more on the front driver's side than the original. Since I was left out of the purchasing loop, I don't know what was installed. Thank you

Okay I have a jtec 3.7L in my 07 Dakota I just bough an 4.7L v8 to swap it out. It came with nothing but intake injectors flywheel which I don’t need I have a manual transmission, I need the manifolds I need different coolant lines power steering lines I also have drive by wire system and the 4.7L I got doesn’t it’s mechanical.... so am I able to just buy any 3 plug ecu and harnesses to make it run? Lolz also the ignition Switch I’m sure will need to be programmed too idk 😐 think I got burned but I only paid $475 for a refurbished 4.7L that was in a Jeep that busted a trailing arm with in like 6k+ miles of it being installed, got paper work for it when it was done which was 3yrs ago but it’s been sitting for like almost 2yrs been ran once just before pulled.... any onsite or anything to help if u can...

Need to check what kind of computer the 4.7 was for and harness has to match. IDK how much will have to be swapped to go from 3.7 to 4.7, but I know the dash harness is different between 4.7 and 5.7 on fullsize trucks so you may be in for a lot of wiring.

@@amykitchen6602 You mean compared to a pull a part engine? Junkyard vehicles are drained of fluids and thrown out in the yard. Best case scenario they might have if they run or drive written on a window, but it's anyone's guess how long ago that was and how well. It's always a gamble, you don't know how many miles it has, and can only guesstimate what condition it's in. Ultimately you won't know until you pull it, drag it home, install it, and fire it up. And if it has a knock or tick you gotta tear it out and bring it back to get your money back. This engine was tested and pulled from a running and driving truck with relatively low miles and shipped to me. That's why it cost more. Given how problematic these engines are, and the time and energy spent to find out if a pull a part engine is even good, it makes more sense to spend more on a known good engine than to take the risk on a junkyard engine.
