Throughout the 1990s, Sonic the Hedgehog was established as one of the most iconic game series. Sega wanted a mascot that could compete with the likes of Mario and Mega Man, and managed to put up quite a fight. While their console, the Genesis, was initially met with lukewarm sales, things eventually turned around when Sonic arrived on the scene. He managed to stick out in the minds of many people who played games, with his unique physics-based gameplay, fascinating characters and world that gradually expanded from game to game, and next-gen visuals and sound.
However, this would eventually begin to sour during the fifth generation, where it seemed Sonic just could not catch a break. Development issues, cancellations, and ill-advised business decisions threatened to destroy the hedgehog's enterprise from the inside and prevented his best chance at redemption, a true 3D entry, from materializing. That is, until Sega began R&D for a new platform. Recognizing that the Saturn had not panned out, they created the Dreamcast, a system intended to propel the industry into a new era. Along with it came the first successful 3D Sonic game, none other than today's topic, Sonic Adventure.
That being said, while it was beloved at the time and generally seen as refreshing for the series, these days its reputation is a lot more mixed. As you may know, 3D Sonic is generally far more divisive than its 2D brethren, and that includes this very game. And that's where I come in. With me doing my own retrospective covering the series, I've reached the point where I too can give my own two cents on this game. Maybe it's unoriginal, perhaps overdone, and it's not even my first time covering the game on my channel, but in covering this whole series, skipping over it would be a disservice. Do I think this game holds up after 25 years? Kick back, possibly with a snack or two, and I hope you enjoy.
