I am a little confused what you mean by actively piloting? You said you would "start actively piloting" in a turbulent situation. In my mind, you are AP'ing from the second you take off until you land. Does the term AP have a very specific meaning?
@ryan.hanthorn
@ryan.hanthorn 4 жыл бұрын
@@Robin-sc1lf This is just a term for when you have your hands on the breaks and are making constant active corrections to stabilize your flight. In smooth air you'll fly pretty straight and can stow the breaks maybe making minor weight shift adjustments; in more turbulent air you can get pitched around a lot maybe start an osculation or change directions unexpectedly. Actively monitoring and correcting for these deviations is active piloting.

In sailing, we have something we refer to as the 50/50/50 rule. Its a kind of oversimplification that is used to explain the danger of cold water. Essentially, in a study of cold-water rescue operations, it was found that in 50 degree water, 50% of people did not survive 50 minutes. Having a life jacket increased the odds of survival by 50%. Beyond that, it comes down to clothing, response, and more general phyiscal attributes (fitness, fat %, etc). Analyzing that cold water response, I'd say first that the water was likely less than 50 degrees, so danger was very high. As for life jacket, that's essentially akin to the flotation in this case. For clothing, he appears to be wearing good, synthetic cold-weather clothing. Synthetic is important here, as it will help to retain heat even when wet (though not so much while still in the water). Couldn't ask for a better response from the sound of it. Overall, I'd say your analysis was right Tucker, for one really bad crash scenario, it turned out as well as it could have. Finally, while I would say he was lucky, I certainly wouldn't say he survived that one by accident. He did everything right and it paid off.

Coming from a cold country I've been in ice cold water both voluntarily and involuntarily several times. The greatest lesson I've learned is: Don't panic! This sounds like an obvious thing, but it's very important. When your body is subjected to ice cold water your body is going to react violently, and that can be fatal if you're not prepared for it. If you try to relax only for a few (5 - 10) seconds your body - and your mind - will calm down surprisingly quick. It will still be cold and scary but you'll think much more clearly, and your chances of survival will increase significantly. Panicking in cold water is very dangerous. If you are going to do any activity were you potentially can end up in cold water I highly recommend jumping into cold water with clothes under safe conditions so you know how it feels and how your body reacts.

I thought they were actual water skis at first. Snow skis ≠ waterskis. A pair of big, wide combo skis probably would have worked as he intended, but then how the hell do you launch with those? Even on snow. These didn't have the surface area or stability to support that kind of weight at that speed.

I think within my first dozen or so flights there was a day when a front blew in and things got a little crazy. I ended up landing safely but got yanked on my back; fortunately with a sturdy V3 that was completely unaffected. I managed to grab a side of my glider and pull it in to get it under control. After talking with other pilots I learned about the B-stall technique and haven't had trouble since... Though I'd also like to mention if you're coming in, in pretty fast wind, landing power on can give you a moment to get on your feet and maintain minor thrust and control while you get your Bs in hand and get ready to pivot and pull.

Another great video Tucker. I'm a delta wing trike pilot and was at the Salton sea fly in 08. There was a guy there that had at least 4 Whippets. They're basically smaller grey hounds. Very cool dogs, very friendly. The guy that owned them had converted a ppg trike with a mast to mount a tandem Wills hang glider wing. It was cool! Super, super nice guy! The guy would buzz it around on the edge of the landing zone without the wing and would go from one end of the fly in to the other. And these sweet dogs would run with their noses 1 foot from the prop! The first time I saw it I ran him down and told him. He said "yeah, we do it all the time"..... Sorry but there should be no unrestrained dogs or unrestrained little children at a fly in. A had my daughter Jennifer's little chihuahua at this same fly-in but she was never off a leash unless I had her in my arms. Can you imagine your dog with 1/3 of his snout? It would break my heart! That dog wasn't small and I hope it bit the pilots shoe or sock. Even a chihuahua latching onto your ankle will draw blood! This dog could inflict severe lacerations. Fly safe brother and if you ever want to fly N.E. AZ drop me a line. I'm in Holbrook Az. just 23 miles from the Petrified forest/ Painted desert. 39 miles from Meteor crater. You have to check out Canyon De Chelly. It's @ 65 miles away.Google it bro! Dave

He needs footage with cats doing that, he doesn't just make those clips happen. Most cats are indoor cats so this would be rare.

Another great video with many good lessons to be learned. My dog runs and hides under my F250 when he hears a 2-cycle engine start up. He can see everything from the comfort of the shade 👍😁👍

6-8 mph wind isn't much when in sheltered areas, the moment you climb above the terrain or trees etc, it can get gnarly very quick, I found that out as an RC model flier.

Might be a good way to judge the wind in a new to you location. Send up an RC plane.

I fly gyros which handle turbulence very well but it can still get tricky on landing. I once was landing on a beach I'd flown from and had my vertical stab kicking me sideways the wind was blowing out to sea over broken treeline, just before touchdown I powered up aborted landing and realised I was likely to hit same again as wind had picked up on my flight. I felt panic start to rise. I forced myself to calm down and did a careful approach and all was fine. But on driving out I looked at the massive wide and open farmland just in from the beach I had so many places to land safely into wind and the worst that would have happened would be to walk a km to get the car and trailer. It struck me perhaps this guy didn't need to land where his car is. Something to think about.

It would gave been epic if the dog fell in deeper water...... and a shark got it.. or better yet, the owner swims out to get his dog and the shark got him. I hate incompetent dog owners

I fell off my bike as a kid in some pond in Short Hills, NJ in a January .... I got out in a few seconds but couldnt talk, couldnt breathe, could barely move... spent the next 20 mins hugging the air dryer in the bathroom until my friends mom picked us up.... I can't believe how calm that dude was!!!!

First video - dude gets dragged due to high wind. Gets assistance killing the wing. Then takes off his helmet while still connected to the wing. That's a good way to make a bad situation worse. Good rule of thumb: helmet and gloves go on before connecting to the wing, and stay on until you are no longer connected to the wing. Kudos to the pilots who are mature enough to leave ego at the door and turn mistakes into learning opportunities for themselves and others. It's a good trait for flying and life in general.

super mature opinion.. as an ex 1970s hang glider ( lawn dart ) pilot .. very low airtime . I survived . now at 76 in November .. Maybe. I would love to have moved on to Paragliders .. but watching a couple of collapses and free medivac coastguard helicopter rescues I decided that it was not for me . Stay safe and keep on with your excellent debiefs.

Here’s one for you Tucker. I’m a very new pilot with only 11hrs to date, my 2 buddies and I that I met while taking training (we all 3 have our own rigs now) were meeting up at AZ Farms in Arizona early in the morning near where we all live. I’m 56 yrs old and have always considered myself in good shape, I’m not a runner but active in hiking, weight lifting, and I like to walk for exercise. On this morning there was zero wind, I’ve had many zero wind launches mostly during training and was always successful, I was all set up and ready to send it, so off I go. Running running, power power, full power and bam I pull my hamstring. I immediately let go of the throttle the minute It pulled, not consciously, but I think just subconsciously, and of course my next step my leg failed from the pulled hamstring witch cause a crash. Fortunately I hit the kill switch the minute I went down, but still nicked my prop on the ground and skinned up my leg and forearm pretty good. Part of my preflight now is to hydrate and some simple leg stretches. Oh, and I forgot to turn on the GoPro just before I launched, so no good footage.
