This is a Dominons 6 Deep Dive going over communions, sabbaths and choirs, and the mechanics and structures of communions and how to improve yours in your games. This will be part of a new series that will dive into a specific topic of the game in more detail than a quick tip. Hopefully it will be useful for you and if there's anything you'd like me to cover please let me know in the comments.

Dominions 6 is a turn based 4x strategy game suitable for both play vs AI, player vs player. Team play vs AI or players also works great as everyone can do their turns at once. The game has a huge variety of units, spells, magic items and different nations to play.
You are a God! You are master and ruler of a loyal nation. You have unimaginable powers at your disposal. You have claimed this world as yours. But there are others who stand in your way. You must defeat and destroy these pretenders. Only then can you ascend to godhood and become the new Pantokrator.

Jeez man I bought D5 but didn't get into it. Just got D6 and there's sooooooo much more to this series than meets the eye at first. Played as Jotunheim and got stomped after I thought I had it in the bag. Now play EA Ulm. It's weird having a lot of skirmishers but I'm learning how to take advantage of earth constructions, nature magic, and forging magic items. It's a lot of fun. Had no idea I'd be able to incorporate giant scorpions, earth elementals and clockwork horrors into what's basically a human barbarian army that focuses on dual wielding and archers. As Jotunheim I would do blood hunts but I never realized you could get 'communions'. Crazy game. Been watching your tutorial videos so thank you and please keep it up!

Try MA Sceleria and use your priests to reanimate massive armies of the dead. They also have astral magic so you can use communions. The capital mages get Death 2 so they can cast Twiceborn, allowing them to return from the dead when they die of old age and cost no upkeep. Death magic is strong and fun imo, still trying to get the hang of blood

@@Dante3214 Thanks for the tip but most of that was gibberish tbh lol. If you have tips for Ulm EA let me know! Great game so far but the fire magic from Abysia hurts. Been focusing on forging fire resistant items for my commanders but I don't think there's a way for me to augment my army and make them more resistant to fire, is there?

Some of the angels that MA Pythium and MA and LA Marignon get also do a chorus communion. Harbingers and Seraphs are automatically chorus masters, and Angels of the Heavenly Choir and Harbingers of the Choir are chorus slaves. This lets those nations cast big air magic easily in combat, and keeps them separate from your normal communion where the slaves might not have air magic and thus might take a ton of fatigue quickly.

Honestly, I had no idea! They've changed since Dominions 5 as much as I can remember, I've gave you a shout out in the new video, cheers for bringing them to my attention!

Oooh, two things were totally new. The upside-down pyramid and having regenerating body guards on slaves plus Soul Vortex - are IMHO advanced. Thanks! :)

Some good rule of thumb numbers would be useful. Like for instance, how many slaves should I aim for in general? Someone who needs a tutorial wouldn't be able to figure this out from your video. I'd bet real money its one of the most common questions newbies watching this will be looking to get an answer to.

A very fair point! It is quite subjective because it really depends on what you want to do with a communion, I am currently drafting a tool to help me explain it more, and I'll do a follow up to this with more examples of communions and what you would use them for!

I agree, simple re-reading of manual dont helps much. Deep dive is not so deep without live examples.. Let's say i playing as Marignon and have 6 witch hunters(f2s1), why i should even bother with communions instead of just spamming holy pyre with them? If i need to cast firestorm i can just recruit grand masters and give them some gems and cast phoenix power or something like that. Just cant see any reasons to use communions on practice.

You know what you're right, an example would've been a good shout! I'll do a followup to this (a 'deeper' dive if you will) and I'll show off the different communions and how you could potentially use them.

I hope that you don't mind that I've also used your example for witch hunters to go pretty in detail about evocation communions at least for MA Marignon and spells like holy fire, hopefully that'll be helpful for you!

This is a video I really needed! I had some elementary understanding of the topic from reading the Dom 5 wiki, but this is way clearer. Thanks a lot for the video! I would like to ask tho. I have been trying Vanarus and Vanheim and, I can see some options on how to form a blood sabbath with Vanarus. Sages + Van commanders, but how would you go about it with Vanheim? Is it worth using the Vanherse in combo with the Vanadrotts?

So with Vanheim they have some access to blood but not the deepest in the game, you may struggle to depend purely on your sabbaths for combat. IF you're just using Vanherse you can do storm and fog warriors with three of them, one master and two slaves, but with just a Vanadrott in a sabbath with two Vanherse slaves you can also boost yourself up to being able to cast wailing winds or army of shades with some extra gems. Keep that in your back pocket to use! Additionally, using you can use your Death Randoms Vanadrotts to cast winds of death using a sabbath to help boost you up in paths, remember to use a skull staff too to cut down on sabbath slaves! Overall I'd say you're probably not going to have massive communions purely from commander cost, but keep it in mind for getting off big battlefield spells. I guess you have missed the sky master matrix and slave matrix items. Here is one example of potentialy very strong interaction I am using as EA TC. So I have a A2 E2 mage with a master matrix and 4 S1 mages. 4 mages cast communion slave (speed 100%), master casts Summon Earthpower (speed 125% cause he is a master). Now you guaranteed yourself that all your slaves will get reinvig 4 acros your communion and can cast Army of Mists with much less chance of slave to die.

Ah shoot, I didn't miss them but completely forgot to include them! I'm doing a followup video for this deeper dive to go into some examples of communions, and potentially show a very complicated reason to use communions in some circumstances, hopefully my Excel is up to scratch! The master and slave items for blood and astral are very very useful, even just removing a single turn of scripting means so much more uptime for spells and freedom to do what you want!

@@ChazzyBurger I was wondering how those items work with the three different types of communions, too. Do they only work for the normal communion type? I suppose that's true. Otherwise, it would get very messy if you had more than one type of communion, huh? Thanks!

@@Bill_GarthrightSo with those items they work exactly as if the wielder had cast the appropriate slave or master spell and they will join that type of communion, they will not create their own item independent one, that would get very difficult to manage! So for example, a Master Athame will make the wielder a sabbath master, where they will interact with anyone casting sabbath slave or using a slave heart.

So is this something you have to set up as part of your scripting or will it be done automatically if you have the prerequisite research?

So usually with communions you'll be relying on your scripting to make them happen, intact I believe that the communion master and slave spells don't usually come up on off script casts, or if they do they have a very low chance/priority. Try out a few games in the arena mod to get the hand of communion master and slave scripts and see what you can cast, if you have any more questions let me know what nation you are playing and I can try and give some pointers!

@@ChazzyBurger nice one, thank you :) I'm just doing my first few games to learn the basics with Ur at the moment (they seem mostly earth/air/nature?) , then im quite keen to move deeper into the magic systems and summon some horrible things

As for magic summons I'm currently working on another video for boosting summons but still needs a little work on it, let me know if there's anything else you'd like me to cover!

I just opened up dom5 again after not playing for a while and I’m thinking about getting dom6. Is EA Mictlan still OP?

I wouldn't say EA Mictlan is OP as it was previously, blesses as a whole took a little bit of a nerf and with the increased army/independent sizes your jaguars and eagles don't expand quite as easily as they did before. The changes to blood hunting potentially hurt them a little, but to be honest they're probably still one of the best nations to go full blood on. In some of my singleplayer games I found them not quite as good as they were before but still good fun to play!
