When your under 18, 17 even 16, my friend bought a real beater rust bucket of a car, we managed to get our hands on a pretty good car stereo cassette, he bought a power booster equalizer 40 watt from radio shack I had a pair of 6 x 9 Jenson speakers, we squared all that away and cruise and play those same albums you mentioned. puff a few, oh yeah!

Tommy is the consummate professional. He’d ride 50 miles a day on a fixed speed road bike staying in shape and balanced, while on tour. Over 70 and still killing it.

@@stratkiller2531 Because Don was talking about Tommy Aldridge, a famous drummer who's played for Ozzy with Randy, Whitesnake at their peak, and many others, is one of the few drummers who can play at very high level after many decades of playing in contrast to Mick Brown who had to retire due to injury.

True story here: I've got an older vehicle (Chevy Suburban) that I use to haul my boat with a 6 disc changer in it. My "Tooth and Nail" CD has been in there WITHOUT being removed for at least 15 years!! It's one of those CDs you play from start to finish..... And yes, you've got to take care of yourself as you get older. I like when Don said, "Clean up, or die!" I saw Tommy Aldridge w/ Whitesnake just before Covid, and he was still tearing it up!!

Loverboy is an underappreciated band, in my opinion. Just a straight up Canadian rock act who wrote some fantastic hooks.

It’s weird I’ve grown up with, seen and followed Dokken my entire life (55 now) and somehow I still wonder about all the hubbub regarding the money disputes. Who knows and the past is the past now I guess but I will say this: that even through all that possible dissent and debauchery between band brothers, the sound, the groove, the hooks, the chops and the energy that came out that group really wrote a big part the metal DNA we all still have inside from that era. Dokken is timeless. I can listen to a Dokken song today as if it’s brand new and every time I hear a Dokken tune it gets me jones’n heavy to head out to a Dokken concert. Dammit, why do we have to get old when we can still go rock’n with Dokken right? So glad I lost my voice so many times sing’n tooth and nail tunes and asking for encores. Best chicks there too accompanied by much drinking. Thanks for it all Don and crew! Thanks for all you guys created and which we definitely appreciated .. and still do.

They have some GREAT tunes, although i severely disagree with the statement that "dokken is timeless". Those tunes are as 80's hair spray as you get.

Tooth And Nail is my favorite Dokken album it’s so strong from start to finish and of course the obvious hits are great but the songs that didn’t get much radio play like Turn On the Action and especially When Heaven Comes Down are killer tracks . RATT and Dokken are my two favorite bands from the genre and era and for the life of me I can’t see why Dokken wasn’t bigger than what they were . I love Fullinbloom it’s my favorite channel 🤘

Thank you for another great interview. It's easy for fans to hear stories from former bands and assume this guy or that guy's story is more believable. I think in the end, there's truth in all of it. It's how each person saw it as it played out in real life. Tooth and Nail was the album that I was first exposed to from Dokken and was the beginning of my admiration of Lynch.

I quit playing my drums at the age 40 because I knew if I hadn't, I would be have even more neck pain then I do now. I switched from metal drummer to ambient music composer and sound installation artist - a much longer lifespan and something I will enjoy doing till I'm too old to think or dead. But I still miss jamming to dokken tunes on the drums!

@N B Similar situation, thanks for sharing. I miss hitting the skins but the "shockwaves" going through my body were noticeable even after I eased up and tried to play more relaxed. It sucks getting old.

I got to hang out with Don at the Marriott in Ft Wayne and spent a few minutes with him and George, they were both very nice to my drummer and myself. We had a drink at the bar then they both headed back to their rooms. A Great memory, I moved to Phoenix in 87 and ran into George a few times,. Never had anything bad to say about either.

There's still a level of animosity between George and Don. I can't know what happened there, but whatever it was, it's not easily forgotten... which is too bad, because those two were the core to the sound of Dokken in the 80's. Don will never replace George, and George, while still an absolute beast on guitar, will likely never find the same success either. I'm a firm believer that no matter how talented someone is, when it comes to bands, they will always need complimentary pieces around them, otherwise they'll never hit it right.

I actually think Pilson was the secret sauce to the Dokken sound. Sure George was a unique player but Lynch Mob sounded nothing like Dokken but listen to the Lynch/Pilson and End Machine CDs and you can hear it. Don was able to replicate some of the feel when he joined up with Jon Levin, and it was good! But there's just something about Pilson's bass and backing vocals. my 2 cents.

@@joestewart2298 That's great! But I did see them live. More than once. Never as a headliner act. They opened for Judas Priest in 1986. Priest was on that Turbo Lover tour. Which later on became a live album for Priest. It's called Priest "Live". And then I saw Dokken warm up for Twisted Sister in 1985. At Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan. The Priest show was at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island Ny. For both shows.....not many were into Dokken at that time. Especially at the Priest concert. People were there for Priest! Nobody gave a hoot about Dokken. In fact, somebody through a wad of gum into Don's hair. But he didn't notice! Funny shit man. Back then; Dokken was considered "Glam/Poser" rock. Priest was pure Metal. I thought it was a complete mis-match tbh. No disrespect to you my friend. But I just dont think you have a true and real perspective on Dokken. There is a reason they couldn't last and conquer the world like Maiden, Priest, Metallica and even Motley Crue! Because they were not that impressive live. Not to me anyways. Good radio rock though. Peace brother. Rock on Sir. I'm with ya'!

Lynch punched out the singer in his second band- Lynch Mob because they were doing a life performance with record execs watching keen to sign. And the singer had been up half a week doin drugs and drinking and his voice cracked up halfway thru the performance. Lynch put him to sleep backstage.

I love all of the Dokken albums from the 80s era. I mean, Love. They're just wicked cool to me. There's always something impressive and fun to hear. I've listened to their 90s and up albums, But I can't really recall them having the same effect.. yet at least. But I have worn those 80s albums out forward to back. Kinda funny side bit, Mikkey Dee after leaving from King Diamond played drums for Don Dokkens solo album.. I believe.. But then went to Motorhead. Mikkey Dee is probably my favorite drummer of all. Some interviews from Mikkeys perspective on his career from KD to Don Dokken to Motorhead would be really really interesting to hear !

Don's comments can be off-putting at times. Dokken was the most talented of the hair metal bands. 2 really good singers. 3 guys who could play guitar. One who was a iconic master. George lynch is a national treasure. I'm glad him and Don are friends again. Saw video of them performing "when heaven comes down" together. It. Was. Awesome!!!

Norman - Totally agree. Don is actually a VERY good guitarist in his own right. I was in high school when "Tooth and Nail" came out. Plus, as a musician myself i could tell there was something different about Dokken.

Man reminds me of seeing Dokken open for Poison. (not a poison fan, free tickets) it was in Vancouver Canada and apparently Dokken was asked to play on super short notice. They had Mickey Dee on drums I think…Anyways they absolutely destroyed..such an amazing set that when Poison later took the stage , the crowd was so disappointed. Musically, Poison totally sucked compared to Dokken’s ass kicker of a set. I’m sure they learned quickly not to have Dokken open any more shows. Lol.

I seen Ratt open for Poison and I thought it was criminal. I think most of us already know that Poison was hardly a band, but Ratt made them look like a bunch of amateurs in a sloppy garage band. To their credit, Poison never said they wanted to be great musicians instead they were about being rock stars. If it hadn't been for all of the crazed young girls wanting to be Poison groupies, they would have failed miserably.

One thing about Mick in the drums and just walking away from the band like that is that he loved it he loved it and he knew that if he hung around and talked with everybody and everything it would stir him up and he'd want to go do it and if he did it, he'd hurt himself even worse. it's like an addict finally figuring out how you got to quit. that's just you got to hate it and you got to not like anything that comes with it at all and and playing the drums like that it becomes part of you

I still have that on LP, scratches and all. I think they had all the time cause they aced that record! That's a great LP! Maybe if they had a decent band name instead of sounding like the singers solo project; they'd garnered more attention. Cause the music was great, vocals, bass, drums & guitars(Don played too, not sure if on this record though). Just my opinion.

Oh, I'm not sure ,Roy..You could be right ,but I think they got about what they deserved..They are a 10 million -selling album band..Nothing more ,nothing less..I like a few of their songs ,but let's be honest , they weren't as big or as talented as the other acts on the Monsters of Rock tour of 88..Named Dokken or anything else .

Look Folks , Not every Metal / Hard Rock Drummer breaks down into Arthritic Oblivion like Mick Brown . Don Dokken obviously doesn't know of many legendary Drummers . There are plenty of Drummers 50 to 70 that are still in shape and banging those drums today . Mickey Dee is 54, he played for Motorhead, King Diamond and currently The Scorpions. Aquiles Priester who replaced Frankie Banali in WASP also played with Angra and still plays with Hangar, toured with DragonForce and mentored Sepultura's Eloy Casagrande just turned 50 in June.

I got a hold of them somehow, lol, cant say I "bought" em all, I think I might have lifted a couple of cassettes off of my older brother. I can say I remember buying "back for the attack" myself with allowance money at 7 or 8. DREAM WARRIORS was the begining and the end for me, combining George Lynch with Freddy Kruger, epic!
