You might have heard of the story of Achilles, a prominent Greek mythological tale centered around a heroic warrior renowned for his strength and invulnerability, except for his heel. According to the myth, his mother Thetis dipped him in this magical river, but she held him by the heel so for the rest of his life (which spoiler alert didn’t last that long) he had this weak spot. And although we all know this is a myth we also all know people who will say: yup that’s their achilles - when pointing out someone’s shortcomings. And the problem I have with this is that it promotes the idea that we, especially our insecurities, are fixed. Forever.
In 2016 the New York Times put out a hit piece on me and other sex educators for well…not being all that formally educated. And while as a black and indian woman I know better than to elevate myself without reinforcement - the truth was without a university degree, my reinforcement wasn’t thick enough. There’s her achilles heel and people sure did kick it.
It bothered me because a) I’m human b) I love what I do and I’m good at it and I want for those who agree with those statements, to have an educator they were proud to champion, not one they had to constantly defend. So I started tryna figure this school thing out: I hired consultants, went on mentor lunches, and spoke with some leaders in my industry. The consensus was I didn’t need a formal education so why bother with the time, effort, and money it would take to get it. They did mention time right? So, with that I let it go for a couple more years until I finally admitted that maybe this weak ankle didn’t bother everyone, but it sure as hell was bugging me. So, in 2018, I enrolled in a bachelor's program at the state university of new york and thanks to my prior post-secondary education I was able to finish in two years. Through a pregnancy and a pandemic - yes I did that. THEN since I was already in the flow of school, I decided to enroll in my Masters of science in psychology at Arizona State University. Now it took me longer than any of my peers that I began with because I had some things to tend to along the way, but in December I completed this program with honors. Sidenote, I didn’t get to go to commencement because of a schedule conflict and although education is a place of pride, at this point in my life it can’t be my top priority. HOWEVER I did order all the fixings so I could celebrate this moment where my achilles became an accolade and I did it with my daughters present so they could see that real magic is not in the absence of vulnerabilities, it’s in the acknowledgement and diligent strengthening of them - Which often, is not possible to tackle alone.
And speaking of daring to do with the support of people who love you, come check me in 2029 and when you do, don’t forget to say doctor

I've never commented on a video because I am a silent subscriber lol but one of my fave youtubers passed away recently and I was gutted that I never got to tell them how great I think they are, even if they never replied it's good energy to put out there and I said I would make an effort to change that. I think your content is amazing and your perspective on life is so raw, wise and beautiful. I appreciate your vulnerability and the attention detail you put towards engaging with us. I always leave your videos feeling enlightened and a little more educated. Thank you for sharing your life/work with us, in what feels like the most authentic way possible. You and Jared have built something wonderful and I am so happy and proud of you! Congratulations on your Masters :) Ps: I love the storytelling in this vid the level up is evident! 🤩

MY Q1 2024 list: Things I love My relationship with my: husband, ryu, xya, sister Where I am on my education journey My plans for my future My devotion to my family’s future +present Learning about sex, love and friendships Teaching others and seeing them teach others Being able to mentor a group of sex educators My lifestyle (I make the most of the day) My mental health (I understand me) My end of day routine The flow of my mornings My face: skin, eyes, lips, ears, eyebrows My body: legs, stomach, shoulders, back, arms, mobility My hands and feet! (Stay mani and pedi - go me!) My discipline My ability to admit my ugly truth (I’m judgy) + my devotion to changing that Things I dislike/ hate Thinking something negative first (Move up - read books on neural rewiring and practice those habits to see the good and look for the good) Too little community/ charity involvement (Move up - find a local charity/ cause to contribute to in person that the kids can take part in too) My input/ output business model (Move UP - Invest in a project manager for a deeper relationship with my community) My lack of true friends and my weaknesses in nurturing friendships (Move up- Research how to make friends start by asking ppl you know who have this skill) My low tolerance for simple things like ppl texting me (Move down - accept this about yourself. You are a communication minimalist) Resentment towards ppl who I feel don’t show up for my kids (Move down - remind yourself that life is long so ppl can come around later or if they don’t it’s nothing to take personal) Feeling scared that my kids will get hurt/ hurt each other (Keep this here it’s good to stay alert) My habit of bothering Jared when I want genuine attention (Move up- Tell him why you bother him and tell him what to say to get you out of these pestering moods) My instagram addiction (move up- follow better quality accounts so you don’t resent time spent here) Aging (Move down - embrace and be proud of the fact that your life - including your face - looks almost 40 and that’s good you’ve done a lot!) My hair right now (Move down - it’s damaged I dunno what you can do now but try and find a good extension situation and leave it alone for awhile) My everyday style (move up and take this on yourself bc hiring ppl hasn’t seemed to work) The time it takes me to get ready bc of the above items (Move up- Put most of your clothes in storage and have 5-8 staple outfits in rotation that best represent you) Hairiness on my lovely legs (Continue with laser away Flat ass (Move down and eventually it will go up bc you are working at it in the gym and you are as consistent as you can be right now, eventually that may intensify but for now you are doing your best) My melasma on my face (Move down- Look into treatment once done breastfeeding) Things I’m neutral about Late mornings Inconsistency with working out My boobs post breast feeding My bellybutton/ stomach post baby How dirty our room is We are outgrowing our house but can’t afford to move up My outdated shoe collection Living in LA My relationship with extended family

As someone who is 30 and just now potentially going back to school (and/or changing my entire career path) I really needed this video. Shan, when I came across you in 2019, I was broken hearted over some doofus in my life that I was addicted to. Your videos helped me put words to what I was experiencing that I wouldn’t have found otherwise. You continue to do so and now in more ways than one. Can’t wait to meet Dr. Shan!🎉

I am so proud of you! This testimony is honestly so inspiring. You are glowing! ♥ An insecurity that I've recently turned into an accolade would be my habit of procrastination. I've done the work over the past 2 months to let my procrastination guide me in moving away from projects, work, people etc. that I wasn't inspired by or passionate about. I've actively stepped away from labeling myself as just a 'chronic procrastinator' and instead use it as a tool to push me towards people, experiences, projects etc. that I'm genuinely intrigued and fulfilled by

SHAN! Thank you so much for sharing this video. Before I pressed played, I was sitting here reflecting on my life. More specifically my 20s, since this year I will be 30 in April (entering a whole new decade!). As I was reflecting, I realized all the accomplishments, downfalls, evolution, growth, changes, and magic that I have experienced. The moves I've made impulsively or more thought out. I don't regret any of it. Something that I have moved from an insecurity to an accolade is finally and truly embracing my queerness. The love and acceptance of self that I have obtained is so peaceful, freeing, authentic, and healing.

Shan, thank you yet again for a video that not only uplifted me but also gave me that uncomfortable motivation to invest in myself meaningfully. But I know that I can tackle my next big goal(s) because I've recently conquered my aversion to running. As a young girl in middle school I had a particularly embarrassing moment because of running and as a result avoided running at all costs. Now, I run three times a week. Even more beneficial to my physical health is the emotional health and knowing that with a goal and a step by step plan, there isn’t anything I can't overcome. As always, thank you, thank you Jared, thank you Shared Ent., family and all the Lovers and Friends for teaching and provoking me throughout the years.

I'll never forget when you talked about the journey up the mountain and how we glorify getting to the top and forget that you get to see a view all the way up. I love, love your perspective on reminding ourselves how good it feels to see even small amounts of progress. I think we get stuck when we assume the good feelings only come when we reach the goal.

7:02 there's no systematic process that prepares you to be great. You are already great, you've always been the greatest Shan. The system deceives us that we are inadequate and we can only be great if it permits us; if it qualifies us🚮. I watched you since you were starting KZfaq and you were as great as you are today; Im quite shocked and saddened to hear people pressured you into doubting your adequacy. Having or not having a costly paper (degree) doesn't define your greatness. Let's stop bullying ourselves into fitting our greatness into a mediocre system; we are divine.

You have created such a solid platform that has transcended beyond your niche and that is very commendable. Tbh I don’t think western education should hold so much weight but I do think the degree accomplishment is wonderful. that’s just an additive to who you’ve already been and all you’ve learned throughout your life. Shan, I've been watching your content since 2016, I remember discovering your channel the night before my finals and binge watched all of ur videos untill the morning when I should've been studying 😅 I don't know if I would've been the sexually empowered and self-aware woman I am today if I hadn't stumbled over your videos that night. You continue to widen my vision and introduce fresh and sometimes 'controversial' ideas to this day. You manage to talk about the most intimate of topics in such a nonchalant matter that I as a teenager never imagined possible- to gather knowledge about sex in a way that will not make me feel weird or shameful. Can't wait to see what's next to come for you!! 🎉

Congratulations!! on your masters and can't wait to see where your doctoral journey will take you. Some of the best advice that my parents gave me when i was in high school when i mentioned that i wanted to be a doctor but that i wasn't too sure because of the years it would take, they told me to remember that time will always pass regardless and to go after what i wanted because journeys can always be started regardless of where we are at in our life and now as i completed my first degree and i am older the advice has never rang more true and is helpful in reminding me that we all create our own path and do it at our own time

🎉🎉🎉 I can’t even remember how long I’ve been a subscriber so the lack of formal education never bothered me but it is so cool that you have your masters now and are pursuing your doctorate. I look forward to how this will inform the work that you put out here. Also this video is stunningly done.

I'm amazed at this video and everything that you're telling us with so much creativity. I'm switching from a casual viewer to turning on notifications RIGHT NOW. Congrats on that master's and overcoming everything that came with it.❤

Congratulations Shan! Thank you for continuing to share your journey. I actually did that exercise and rewatched the video during the past Holiday season. As a result, I decided to go back to school to finish my Bachelor’s in Business as I continue to pursue my career in Cybersecurity. Just like you, I had the certificates and community, but deep down I knew I wasn’t content with not finishing business school. Im scheduled to start this Summer. Thank you again Shan. Much love and support to your doctorates program. - Char🌹

Shan I've been following you on social media for years now, since i was 16, im 22 now and you've taught me sooo much! Congratulations on this amazing accomplishment! Thank you for sharing your story because its definitely going to be inspirational to other people who want to get their degrees but feel intimidated by how long its going to take. I started college in 2019 and i still haven't graduated because life be lifeing lol. However im back on track now. Also Im not going to wait till 2029 to call you doctor because I already see as one.
