1971 Honda CB350K vintage motorcycle light overhaul with a mandatory oil change, starter motor cleanup, spark plugs, condenser and ignition coils check. Removing the tank since it is rusty inside and brings all the dirt straight into fuel petcock and carburetors. Fuel tank needs to be cleaned with sloshing around gravel or acid inside the tank. Carburetors are as expected filled with gunk and dirt. There's no battery of course and someone has swapped out the original blinkers with newer square ones which have to be replaced.

camshaft eater engine, and NO oil filter to catch the constantly recycling debris. I was a mechanic at a honda dealership in the early 70s.. Honda sent a memo to every dealership service department, and parts department, to stock seven top end rebuild kits for every 10 machines that that dealership sold.. I got so fast at changing the cams, thrust washers, bearing blocks, rockers in these 350 Honda twins, that I could have a camshaft out of an engine after it pulled in before the camshaft was cool enough to hold with bare hands.. I was a flat rate mechanic, and if I could do four top ends in one day, I could make 36 hours pay in eight hours.. The issue with resurrecting an old one is, there’s a lot of “while you’re in there “parts that you should replace while you were in there, like cam chain tensioners, cam chain.. One bulletin to the mechanic/service department that I still used today during that memo from Honda. Paint the base gasket and head gasket with rust oleum aluminum paint, and put it on the engine wet during assembly. That head gasket and base gasket will never leak, and when you go to take the engine apart for the next camshaft replacement, the engine will come right apart without destroying those gaskets. I still use that same can of aluminum rust oleum paint on dry paper gaskets to this day. You don’t stir the paint, you just use the gooey paint from the bottom of the unstirred can and work that into both sides of the gasket..The gasket will never stick to either surface, and it won’t leak either

Beautiful bike. Memories of mine 1974 CB350K come up. On the right hand side of the motor there is an oil centrifuge on the crankshaft which the motor oil cleans from dirt. It could be that there is a lack of maintenance. Keep an eye on the dirt which is there. It could clog the oil flow. You get access to it by 3 Phillips screws on the right motorcover as far I remember. Greetings fom Bavaria.

Just a tip Donn, pull the chrome cover on the other side of the head and adjust the valves. They sound kinda loose. I had 2 of these and 3 cl 350 scramblers so this is a fun blast from the past. Love your fabrication videos but this was a cool break!

I used to have a 71 Honda cb 450 dohc it was a beast. With minimal rebuild was dependable for years. I have now a 81 Honda cb 750 k that runs but still needs more TLC . but I'm just not into the restoration process as I used to be. And e bikes are so much fun now, with cardio benefits.

E bikes, electric cars/motorcycles etc; hmm. There's going to be a massive scramble for gas powered everything when main power grids fail either b/c of age and/or lack of maintenance like those seen in CA [with more already forecast], or via the fact they're prime targets during conflicts. Lets not forget the anarchists who tend to suddenly get a bee in their bonnet. With the majority of gas stations having gas powered back-up generators [b/c it's required by law], anything powered by a gas engine is gonna look real nice during those events.

Wow brings back some memories...I had a 350 Scrambler from that time and it was a everyday means of transportation during the late 70s to the early 80s . These bikes may not have been super fast but they was so much fun and easy to ride. I always wanted a 350k because of the exhaust running on the bottom instead of the right side can't tell you the times I got burned and cussed every time. Great change of videos keep us updated on the progress of the bike as well as the new build.

Put tires one it, change oil, give it gas and minor maintenance like air filter, coolant, breaks every 10 years and she's good. Hondas just work. Love the build and wow that oil plug was tight! Somebody got stupid with with it. My big oil plug has a mesh filter on it yours maybe missing not sure but I know that about mine. What a cool bike🥰🥰🏍🏍🥰🥰

The brass tubular screen is gone out of the fuel petcock and the tank crossover was good at collecting junk. Power issues can be caused by mis-setting the points. There were 2 models of engines with very different firing angles. Mine was 179 degrees and I don't remember the other, but my friend had it, and the shop used the 179 and it ran on 1 cylinder until I fixed it for him. The insulation in the starting motor was dodgy and not oil resistant. The rectifiers were inefficient and went bad often (and may have contained mercury). The neutral light switches got mangles frequently. Never saw one with original carbs that did not have holes in the diaphragm (which led to an interesting, almost "digital" power curve). A heavy keychain WILL make the ignition switch go bad quickly. Watch the brake linings. If they get too thin, it's possible to pull the cam over the top leaving you with zero brakes. Don't forget to set the valves and adjust the cam chain tensioners frequently. The most common cause of engine damage was a faulty shifter seal letting the oil out (slowly and stealthily). The swing arm would require frequent greasing which most people did not do, leading to nasty clean up (I mixed anti-seize with the grease). When the clutch pack would get thin, you could add an extra pair of plates to get it back to "new". The upper and lower steering races had a different number of balls, 37 on top, 36 on the bottom if I recall. That's all I can think of. Good luck and enjoy!

Also its good idea on 4 stroke machines to use some two stroke gas in the engine before putting it away. It does not cost much to add the oil and it covers surfaces of the carbs and cylinder with some oil preventing rusting, unlike pure fuel. Less oxidation and such crap. When taken back to use just pour in normal gas and it flushes the system from the oil. Little bit extra emissions and suth but nothing major. Same apply to oil injection two strokes btw.

Been using philips screwdrivers for over 30 years and no problems. Just don't try to use the wrong size philips for the screw. Most of them work well with a #3 Phillips. Also, get yourself a hand impact for the tighter screws, even the JIS drivers chew them up. With the hand impact, you can loosen them the first time and avoid chewing them worse than they might already be. Cheers from rustbelt Alberta Canada 🙂

My younger brother had a '71 CB350K and I had a '71 CB750K. Later, when I went into the Army, my brother sold his 350 and bought my 750. Those were fun days. There was an issue with the 750 though, the stock chain would stretch and jump the front sprocket upon sudden deceleration coupled with hard braking and the chain would jam up between the sprocket and the crankcase and crack the cast aluminum I had to completely disassemble my engine and take the block and case to a professional welder and have it heli-arced. After that I replaced the stock chain with a higher quality after market chain and never had a problem with it agailn.

I personally think that was one of the best bikes ever made and are a world of fun to ride. Points were a problem with oil on them but I think there is a felt gasket that keeps most of it out, I hope so. A bunch of nuts and bolts in the tank an put it on the paint shaker or a car wheel and left to rotate helps but usually new is best. If you are a seldom rider, fixing is best still.

The line/tick mark on the screw should be around 4 o'clock position. Yours is at around 9 o'clock. Check all 4 valve adjusts. The tick marks should always be facing outwards. So around 7 o'clock for exhaust and 4 o'clock for intake! Then set your gaps from there. Cheers
