In this video series, I'm building a double garage with a pitched roof from start to finish. This is part one and as ever there are tips and things that will help you in your project: #Groundwork #construction #foundations

Im about to get qoutes for a double garages, just had plans drawn. A query do the foundations need to be so deep and could you not have used the existing floor thar was there?

Not sure I would have cut them roots with a chainsaw as that chain will be blunt now after hitting the dirt.. A recipricating saw or the likes could be better

Building a similar single skin garage but digging to a metre. How much concrete would you put into trench foundations please ? Any hardcore ? Thanks
@foundationgood123
@foundationgood123 Жыл бұрын
welk just to give you an idea, house foundation has a minimum of 225mm depth approx 9 inch in okd money! Hardcore is used if the ground is poor but a metre down is the depth for a house so you should be on good firm clay. I suggest a 150mm 6inch depth for your concrete!

Would the rebar be needed if you’d have poured deeper concrete say 600mm?
@foundationgood123
@foundationgood123 Жыл бұрын
It didn’t need it, I chose to put it in as I had it left over from a previous job and was a good way to use it. If I used that much concrete it would have shot the price up and my would have been beaten by competitors!!

Nice work. Is there no way you could have incorporated the (high quality) old floor slab into the larger new one (say with resin anchors or thunderbolts to tie the two together)? The carbon footprint of concrete is enormous, we are running out of landfill space and the world is running out of sand suitable for making more.
@foundationgood123
@foundationgood123 Жыл бұрын
Well that sounds good but wouldn’t have worked, it was different dimensions and it needed foundations. Regards to the carbon footprint it’s something I don’t believe but that’s another subject! The concrete was crushed and reused in construction and the top soil is easily dealt with unlike plastic etc!

@@errolwhyte3903 No, I haven't, and more to the point, nor have the resource extraction companies. If you'd spent more of your time studying, and less of it making fatuous remarks aimed at being amusing, but which instead just show your ignorance to the world, you'd know why this is. The tiny and rounded-grain structure of highly-weathered sands from deserts and beaches make weak concrete. And contain salt. It's why the construction companies are hoovering out the far less abundant river sands. If we humans EVER manage to turn around the mess we are making of the planet, it won't be because of the smarts of people like you, Errol. Think about it.

So opinions vary depending on which country you are in but to summarise it if doing strip foundations where the walls rest on a thin strip then you go BELOW the frost line ie 450mm in the UK below surrounding ground level you then pour into the strip to bring it up and the bricks are put on this . The floors are 'floating' meaning they aren't connected to the bricks and are above the frost line and in any case cold protected as the ground temp in the center is around 5 degrees. So the other option is a raft foundation and this is where it gets interesting Sarah. This can be cheaper or dearer than a strip. Basically the walls are supported by a heavily reinforced mat that spreads the load. This can be above the frost line. Reinforcement would be A393 mesh on top and bottom with 50mm cover of concrete top and bottom. Slab thickness would be an even 200mm or 9 inch and you can also put rebar 16mm 4 bars tied to the a393 2 top and two bottom all the way around the edge and even in the middle or like a cross . You can build above ground with a raft and just dump 1 150-200mm of 804 on the ground, level and Wacker it , set up forms, put 2 thicknesses of damp proof 1200 on base , rebar chair 50mm, a393 10mm mesh with 450mm overlaps minimum, then on top of this another rebar chair every meter and another a393 mesh lapped with 450 mm minimum and then around 50mm in put a 16mm rebar tied to the mesh ends, then 5 inches in another 16mm rebar and you should have done this on the bottom sides also before you put the top mesh in then if you need to tie the upper and lower meshes together so you should have put in u shapped rebar on corners also or you can use 90degree bent rebar also one top and one bottom tied. The rebar chair in the center should be 90 mm and 50 on bottom meaning top has 50mm of cover for 200 slab.You could stand a herd of elephants on this! Hope that answers your question! Ps you have to reinforce a raft top and bottom as test a piece of post it notes and bend it notice how top stretches and lower compresses, Wel concrete is weak in tension so will crack on top. Also I wouldn't put the walls on for a few months while slab settles differentially and concrete sets which at 200mm takes 2 months and then can form brickwork straight as it were compensating with mortor. Also don't insulate under raft is my advice and insulate on top after with 150mm insulated bonded bead screed. This ensures strength and stability. If you don't want your finished floor at 200+200+150=550 above surrounds then you can dig down a foot and have floor 250 above ,in this case ensure to put in 3 layers of dpm and extend gravel past the footprint of building and consider sand blinding the 804 to ensure the membrane doesn't tear although the 3 layers should ensure this! Don't rebar tie the raft to the existing house if an extension and allow it to float free with a foam insulation spacer. Also as far as differential movement is concerned because youve created a fat edge reinforced mat you can drill every 200mm on the sides and epoxy in rebar later if it moves unfavourably and in the strip next to it if access place screw piles on one side and a second reinforced mat next to it say a meter wide resting in heads of screw piles😆😁

The cheapest way to do a raft is just build above ground level and dump aggregate on top but I'm not sure how building control react as I believe they want people to dig down 1.5m the full size of raft remove hundreds of tonnes of soil and put hundreds of tonnes of aggregate in to ensure its well drained but if you build above ground then as you've raise the level the 150-200mm of crushed rock ensures the drainage automatically via gravity. Honestly I'd put 150mm of what we call in Europe T2 permeable stone this is well draining and 50-75 of T1 structural which you call 804. At 10 per tonne and 20 tonne for a 50sqm slab then form and put in 1-2k of steel a393. So it's real cheap😁
