Doug Ford's Greenbelt review a 'sham,' Ontario NDP leader says

'I think [the review] is a colossal waste of our money and our time as Ontarians when the government knows exactly what they need to do,' Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles said.

In Ontario there must be LEGAL ACCOUNTABILITY from top to bottom in the provincial investigations. Resigning or losing election is NOT ENOUGH.

50k homes on 7500 acres, we need 1.5 million homes. Do the math! The flaw is their leadership. Ontarians will be paying not only in losing greenbelt farm/wet lands, but also in further public resources required to develop infrastructure to sustain ever growing sprawl. Develop the land already set aside for homes!

Never mind also that just building homes, regardless of their resiliency to natural disasters, isn’t sustainable as many residents of Florida (particularly in the wake of Hurricane Idalia) and BC’s Southeastern Interior (wildfires) have already found out.

How does this benefit Ontario taxpayers? It doesn't. Will it build healthcare, increase doctors, nurses and teachers? Will it bring down rents, build affordable housing for minimum wage earners? No. It will destroy our most treasured resource for food, for clean safe and abundant water, not to mention create more air pollution, noise pollution and urban sprawl.

Do you really think Ford would have brought the RCMP in if he thought he was guilty of anything??? The ONE and ONLY reason the RCMP are involved is because Ford wanted an open, honest investigation. Unlike investigations into the actions of past Liberal and NDP governments who had the OPP who’s hierarchy reports to the provincial government do an investigation.

My heart aches at the thought of the conservatives opening up more of the green belt. It horrifies me to think that in my life time the entire greenbelt will be open to captialist developers. This is a larger issue, its the very real existental fear of humanity going the way of environmental destruction and feeding the fires that will consume our planet and destroy life and the earth.

There are an awful lot of older, dilapidated neighbourhoods around that could be rejuvinated. And building houses that people cant afford to buy....HOW is THAT helping anyone? The people who dont have homes STILL can't afford to buy them!?!? And maybe look at tenant rights! I have never heard of anyone getting an N12 notice to vacate...in the past 2 years I know of 4! Our homes are not our homes anymore as renters! We don't even home security as a renter!

the challenge of all provincial leaders in Ontario is the lack of housing. Reduction on house builds plus Immigrants are pouring in , living in tents, buses and on the streets. Big mess. To address this problem more houses need to be built , no one would argue. However where there is division comes from where to build the houses? No one wants low income houses built in their neighborhoods , this would reduce house prices for already existing homes. Ford's plan to build homes in the million acre green belt. is not crazy, where else can they build them? No one has asked this question to the opposition leaders. Where would they build the homes? How Ford has managed the issue has been very problematic. There is now talk to possibly pull the land back from the developers in the green belt. This will get us no where with building houses..

The homes planned in the Greenbelt space were not affordable. Building luxury homes away from available services does very little to house people who need a roof over their head asap. New immigrants, people forced to move because of unrestricted rent increases allowed for buildings 2016 and newer, the working poor, the elderly and so much more. There are lots of properties available for infill projects, easing restrictions for building could go a long way. I live in a diverse neighborhood and it's great. Multi-million dollar homes, affordable townhomes, mid-range semi detached homes and low price end apartment buildings. High density neighborhoods subsidize the low density suburbs. Poor neighborhoods subsidize as sprawling rich neighborhoods with their tax dollars. It's obscene.

I'm still learning English Arts and I:) have a question? Why is this like it is, this topic on Green Belt project and why after its build its sounds like there a problem I don't understand. Please some one, why after not before this project was finished the ideas of problems have risen?

It's a very fertile natural area that was promised to be preserved as such - it wont be sustainable after it has been developed (built on)

Basically, our politicians saw some land they wanted and knew it was off-limits (sections of the Green Belt). They promised the land to investors anyway, and those investors took them at their word and invested in the land when it was still cheap and useless ('useless' for development - important environmentally). Then, the politicians made a group of their friends approve the paperwork that takes the land from "off-limits" to "for sale," but that process was done incorrectly (it would not have been approved otherwise). Now, those politicians are making excuses as to why they should be allowed to keep the land they took (stole) and the entirety of Ontario is pissed off at them. Hope this helps!

Both Left and Right ideologies have poor people. These people (the majority ) have more in common with each other than they do the rich rulers. The anger we've been throwing at each other for decades need to shift towards the rich elite to demand better. Labour is the power of business. If labour wavers, so do profits. The NDP are the closest chance at a labour centric party.
