Ever wondered about the difference between a drill, a hammer drill and an impact driver? Here we'll explain the differences and help you choose the right tool for your project. Here are the tools used in this video:
DeWALT 20V Max Drill and Impact Driver Combo: amzn.to/2sGBQC6
Here's a 12 volt option, which has plenty of power for most DIY tasks: amzn.to/2CCtuLz. I've built decks and framed walls with this kit and I highly recommend it. Not as much power or battery life as the 20V, but enough for most tasks.

Not only was this video perfect for explaining the difference between the 3 different tools, it could (and should) be used as a how to make concise and informative videos on KZfaq. All facts and useful info with zero time wasted on rambling and close-ups when appropriate. Excellent video!

There's a rule that no matter the length of the video you can usually skip the first 10-15% of the video. It's a handy rule. "Today on [name clearly below video] we're going to be [title of video]!" *cut to intro screens with flames and steel letters* "So my wife wanted to build an avocado organizer out of wildebeest skins....."

For the complete newbee another KZfaq content provider who nails it is "See Jane Drill". Her motto is: "You can DO this." She is aimed at those who never picked up a tool ... especially women who are on their own and don't plan on getting married just to have someone around to fix the car when it won't start. LOL :) She is very down to earth and does not waste any time either.

Whoops! I just realized that at I said "hundreds of times per second" when in fact I meant "hundreds of impacts per MINUTE". The impact driver shown here provides up to 3200 impacts per minute, so 53 impacts per second.

@@ToolMetrix the cordless drill, does have a hammer function, just like that big drill, but it is not as good as a SDS drill or corded hammer drill. I only use my hammer setting when I have to because it's not good for the clutch. (DCD996) However, it's a good concrete drill if you don't have access to a SDS.

As and electrician, I like the hammer drill best for my tool belt carry. It can do everything well enough. While impacts can do certain tasks better, there are other tasks they can't do at all. The versatility makes it choice for me. The only time it feels like it falls behind is when driving long wood screws. Most the time I can manage without stripping them by dropping to a lower motor speed and applying pressure with short trigger presses. But if I have to drive a lot of long screws into wood, or if I have to drill into wood that may have nails or at a position that I can't stabilize the drill well, I'll run out to the van and grab my impact. 95% of the time, I'm using my hammer drill.

I'm a Licensed Journeyman Electrician with over 52 years in the trade . I specialize in Residential & Commercial Electrical Wiring and Maintenance. I own and use Dewalt 20V Max Lithium-Ion 1/2'' Hammer Drill, a Dewalt 20V Max Lithium-Ion 1/2'' Drill/Driver and a Dewalt 20V Max Lithium-Ion 1/2'' Impact Driver. I can drill 3/4'' holes in 2x4 Stud Framing all day long and only have to change the battery out once when using the 4-hour 20V battery. I always use the Hammer Drill when doing Electrical Rough-In wiring because if I should by chance hit a hard knot hole in the stud, the Hammer Drill goes through it like a hot knife through butter ! I also have a complete set of Masonary Bits of different lengths and sizes that I use with the Hammer Drill when drilling through Brick or concrete cinder blocks. I use the Impact Driver when mounting electrical boxes and panels in both wood constructed buildings and or steel purlins in Steel Framed Metal buildings . I have used all kinds of Power Tools, corded and cordless by several other manufacturers over the years and have found that Dewalt Power Tools are the BEST on the Market. I also own a Milwaukee 1/2'' Right-Angle corded Drill and a Milwaukee Sawzall and a 1/2'' Sears Craftsman 1/2'' Big Drill, corded. But I prefer and use the Dewalt Power Tools the most and Dewalt is the only brand that I buy now. Where is Your Dewalt 20V Lithium-Ion Hammer Drill when drilling into that concrete cinder block ?

Hi BearStar, thanks for your input. I don't have a cordless hammer drill but it sounds like you really like yours. Good to know and I'll keep it in mind. I don't use the hammer drill that much, so it doesn't bother me much to run an extension cord. I do use a drill and impact drive a lot, so I prefer to keep those cordless. Good to know about going through a knot with a hammer drill. I had not heard that before and that will come in handy someday. Cheers, Paul

Currently considering of upgrading my power tools. Started off with a dewalt 20v combo kit when it was on discount not knowing anything about them. Now today i was struggling to keep my drill going through joists and 2x4 so started looking for upgrades. Was considering the xr but im still thrown around of the differences. I want a smooth powerful drill that can drill everything. Never dealing with anything other than wood but i want something capable. Is the xr enough or should i bite the pepper and get the xr hammer drill and call it a day? Thanks for any helpful input.

If you do much drilling in cement you might want the hammer drill. Otherwise, the XR is fantastic.

I'm very sorry, Aaron (and everyone). I wish I had been wearing headphones when I edited the video and I would have dialed it back. It's not painful without headphones so I didn't notice it. I've tried to tone it down now that it is uploaded and unfortunately I can't do it without causing problems to the overall audio quality. If there's a KZfaq guru who can help with this I'd welcome the input. Again, my apologies.

Thanks for the information. Could I ask a question. I want to buy a drill or is it an impact driver that I need for building stuff in the house like chairs, tables, tv stand e.t.c . So I need something affordable because I have to ship it to Kenya again. Which drill should I buy?one that also has adequate drill bits even the ones for making bigger holes. Thanks in advance.
@ToolMetrix

If you can afford the kit that has both, I'd suggest that. amzn.to/2sGBQC6 If you only want one, I'd suggest this one: amzn.to/2VztfvL. You will have to buy bits separately. Here's a nice set: amzn.to/2CaIl1w

Most hammer drills can operate in hammer or non hammer mode so you could use one for drilling in all three materials.

So for an all around multi purpose driver, do you suggest the hammer drill with the no hammer options?
@ToolMetrix
@ToolMetrix 4 жыл бұрын
For a good general purpose tool I'd suggest either that option, or a good 20V drill. A 20V drill will have enough power to occasionally drive large fasteners or drill in concrete.

So what would be a good drill for someone who wants to drill holes in concrete walls and use it for all kinds of fasteners? I know from this video that I should get a hammer drill and an impact driver, but is there a drill that can do both? I use this stuff at home maybe once a month and I don't want to get two to just sit around...an all purpose drill would be great, if it exists
@ToolMetrix
@ToolMetrix 3 жыл бұрын
For your use case scenarios I would recommend this one: amzn.to/2IkWOPe . It has a hammer drill mode, but it is not as powerful as a dedicated hammer drill. Nice design, economical. You can see it in action in my video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jbeKaruput6-lY0.html
