Today we are uncovering terrifying hidden secrets from the ‘golden era’ of cinema. This is a deep dive into the dark side of Hollywood studios and their obsession with controlling and abusing their female stars: icons such as Joan Crawford and Olivia de Havilland, and child stars like Shirley Temple and Judy Garland.

One small correction - Judy Garland did have one person looking out for her on the set of the Wizard of Oz. It was actually Margaret Hamilton, the wicked witch of the west. She cared for her like she was her own daughter. ❤️

absolutely, sometimes i feel weird about how Eleanor covers these types of things as if they’re completely over. like, this video doesn’t nearly cover the entire “dark history of hollywood exploiting and abusing women”, it should probably just be titled something about judy garland more specifically, because there is SO much more to cover between Judy Garland’s experiences and our modern Hollywood. ofc i don’t expect Eleanor to cover ALL of it, but it’s still very inspecific and glosses over the modern parallels to this situation that happen everyday.

I read something else about the fire situation with Margaret (the Wicked Witch) and because the makeup was so toxic it essentially singed and captured the heat of the fire and was burning her face even AFTER the fire was out. Apparently the actors could hear her screams and moans for a long time. They had to rush to get the makeup off her face, but the only thing they had that could remove it was ALCOHOL. She was moaning and screaming endlessly in pain. And they wanted her back the next day? Her face was scarred for life.

It's interesting, my nan absolutely idolised Shirley Temple and Judy Garland, to the point she taught me to sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow at a very young age (she was also a dancer and a performer, born in 1926 and performed in the war for soldiers). Whenever I tried to discuss the hardships of their lives as I grew up and understood more, it was almost like she could not process it and brushed it off as 'show business'. I'm not sure if it was naivety or denial at how abysmal the industry treated/treats their performers.

And was happy to lose his namesake. Her father who was her alleged first abuser. Which lead to Rita becoming dependent as a teen on alcohol, which consumed Rita for decades. Rita was later diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's disease, which contributed to her death.

I remember the first time I read about Judy's story in my early teens. It was so traumatizing to learn that the actress behind one of my favorite movies as a kid was treated so horrifically. I actually got in trouble when my parents "caught" me looking up such dark information. Even just normal people don't want to talk about the things that go on in Hollywood. It's too hard to look behind the curtain of an industry that most people view as being responsible for so much joy and entertainment. And that's why people in those positions of power will always be able to get away with this sort of thing even to this day. Because it's easier to look the other way.

I just want to give this girl a big hug and give the director a big slap on the face just like he did, sorry, I'm so devastated for her. It's actually so eerie to see how innocent and joyful the characters look in the film and how in reality so much pain, abuse and destruction stands behind all that. I'm especially terrified and disgusted with her mother who not only allowed all of this, but actually encouraged and took an active part in destorying her daughter's life. Just a broken life for a big corporation's money. And a solid paycheck for her sweet mother. I don't often write comments, but when I do, it's because of how angry I am in these cases.

I got into “The Wizard of Oz” back in December and was saddened learning how toxic the set truly was, especially regarding Judy. Apologies in advance for this comment. I didn’t think it’d end up being this long, but I’m passionate about my hyperfixations. 😅 Nearly everyone in the main cast suffered in some way: Judy with her mother and drugs; the original actor for Tin Man being hospitalized due to the makeup; Jack Haley taking his place and having a hard time wearing the suit, not being able to even sit properly or comfortably and having to lay vertically on a board to rest; Ray Bolger nearly getting severely burnt when his Scarecrow costume caught fire; Bert Lahr risking heat stroke because of his costume (which was a real lion skin) and Margaret getting those severe burns. Even Terry (Toto’s actress) wasn’t spared! One of the Winkie guard actors accidentally stepped on her and broke her paw! She had to recover for weeks and they used replacements until then. Also her handler was paid more than Judy! :/ The set was also very hot and stuffy. The film itself is gorgeous and I love it very much, but it’s a shame nearly everyone basically suffered in its making. I believe the only friends Judy had on set was Margaret and Ray. I read Ray was like a father to her and behind the scene footage of them showed that they had a great relationship and their friendship lasted for decades; Ray even protected Judy by shielding her when a light fixture burst-and he was wearing his flammable Scarecrow outfit! Judy even had Ray on her show once and they sang “If I Only Had a Brain” and were shown to be affectionate and lovable to one another! I think Judy also had a great friendship with Jack and Bert, there’s not a whole lot of info on their relationship with her. Judy’s daughter did end up marrying Jack’s son, so I’m assuming they had a decent friendship. I’m just glad Judy at least had the love and support of her fellow Oz castmates, especially Ray and Margaret!

well honestly...while it is true that it was good she made lasting friendships with her costars from the Wizard of Oz (genuine friendships are always nice, no matter the circumstances), what you are actually describing is a form of trauma bonding. it is likely that them forming those bonds is how they made it through the process of filming the movie at all, at least mentally. but its unfortunate that those friendships were formed due to the things they had to go through while making the movie. it would have been nice if they could have become friends under more normal circumstances but...at least they had each other when they needed it the most. i couldnt imagine what would have happened to all of them if they didn't form those bonds.

It defo does seem like a copy of baileys dark history series. Hopefully Eleanor will focus on uk dark history (which gets over looked even though ours is just as f'd up) instead of us history that bailey does otherwise we are just going to end up with Same stories. @@user-oy3yo7qe6o it wouldn't be copycat if she'd done something different with it style wise - but this is identical to Dark History. It's not just the choice of story, because of course all the different channels do the same stories at some point, but this is far too similar. It's got no individual personality to it at all. It's Dark History with a different name and I really hope she's going to make some effort to individualise her content in future because this is sad to see.

@@StrawberryStarfruit9 the topic doesn't matter, the style and personality does. This isn't unique, it doesn't even sound like an Eleanor video. It's Dark History and she needs to make it more her own, because this is flat out unoriginal. Personality is everything.

And there’s so much behind the scenes horrors that they have probably gone through too and when all that comes out in a few years it’s gonna be crazy. It’s such a shame that human beings are being exploited to such a crazy extent and for decades too. NOVEL BELOW: Listening to this more and more it sounds a lit like the Korean Idol system. - 7 year contracts - Forced surgery - horrible diets - pills and treatments for weight - no dating without the company's approval - The company selects how the idol looks, dresses, and in many cases act in public and online - debuting minors who have been training since they were toddlers (w/ many being sexualized) And now, with social media and TV, they make idols post what they want and film almost EVERYTHING they do for shows. Oh, and if you aren't the company's favorite, they will make you do all of this but rarely back you outside group activities. In many cases, this means you get less pay. Not sure if it still the case, but the companies used to pay for idols in training, BUT this would be placed as a debt and if the idol debuted, any work done would go to pay off that debt first. Many report having earned little to NOTHING after years of work. One company even made the idols pay for things like music videos and events, in which they would have little to no say in. So yeah, I guess you could do another ff on Korean entertainment companies, and it could be like 500 parts

I used to read a lot of books about actors and Hollyweird until I finally gave up on it altogether and quit watching anything they put out. It truly is horrifying what they put their employees through. I moved on to European movies and dramas, with some Australian, and finally settled on Asian, mostly Korean. I'm sure they have many of their own issues, but at least their stories are much more to my liking. Their writers are far superior to ours, IMO. Recently heard rumors that Disney removed Halle Bailey from Oscar nominations because she is pregnant and unmarried. 😮 if that's true, I'm appalled that these companies are still pulling this shit. She's a grown woman who did a FANTASTIC job in the role, Disney pushed so hard for her to be accepted in this role, millions of little children look up to her and see themselves in her ... and Disney is going to hold her back from an award and the recognition she deserves because they're afraid of the morality of an unwed mother???? First of all, kids aren't watching award ceremonies. Second, if they were, they really wouldn't care, they just care about their favorite little mermaid singing the songs they love. Third, pointing out again that she is a grown woman who has every right to pregnancy and a baby, regardless of her marital status! God, I really hope it's just rumors and that she was struck from the list for different reasons.... but I'm doubting that.

@refinnej5302 because there's a good possibility they are true. The fact she was taken off the nomination list is already verified. Her removal from the nomination list came shortly after rumors of her pregnancy with her boyfriend started circling. It seems pretty obvious what Disney is doing. What other reason would Disney have for removing the star of their biggest movie of the year from the nominations list after already submitting her name?

She hasn't even confirmed she's pregnant, its just a rumour, and we should try to stay clear of contributing to rumours regarding pregnancy, for one being that some of the reasoning is often just fat shaming or sexualisation (i.e when a woman wears baggy clothing), but also because if she is pregnant it can be quite dangerous and detrimental to out that about a person, especially in early months of pregnancy. if you see rumours of pregnancy, ignore it or wait for real confirmation, otherwise you can accidentally contribute to pretty severe and harmful things that i genuinely don't believe you are trying to contribute to in any way
