Drums are an important component in modern day music. The right tone & feel of the drum mix is an important part of the driving force for any song or beat. Creating a solid “glued” sound for your drum bus is a great way to ensure a solid knock without creating chaos. Website: soundoracle.net/
In this video we will breakdown the things to consider on your drum bus such as, proper routing, setting levels, saturation, & bus compression. We will demonstrate how to execute these task & give you tips on how to properly compress your drum bus so it doesn't sound smooshed or lose it’s punch.
Follow along as professional engineer Eric “Realistic” Michael breaks down his techniques to an awesome drum bus.

Quick question (By the way I bought the mixing course 👍) Why my Drum bus (sum) comp have a 2db reduction even before I touch the threshold (I'm on +15) while you got it compressing only around 0?

Yo @Realistic, question for you. If I’m side chaining my kick to the 808, should I be routing the kick to the drum bus as well? What if the kick is a higher volume than the other drum elements, would that bot trigger the bus compressor too early where the quieter elements aren’t even affected by the compressor? Let me know fam!

millionhertz hey thanks for watching! Glad the info is useful. I have a 2014 15” MacBook. Quad core processor & 16 GB of RAM. Quad core/16GB definitely helps with the performance when I’m running big sessions with lots of plugins.

Hi! Thank you for your tutorial. It really helped out. But i got a question, which disturbs me : I'm on logic pro and 'im getting started with the drum bus. When i'm sending my drums on the bus, I don't know at which level I should send my drums in the drums bus. Shall I go all the way up (6-db) or keep it lower ? It's really confusing. Thans for your answer. Subbed

Debonairo Beats hey thanks for watching. I use Pro Tools, so maybe Logic has a different routing system, but I route the outputs of my kick, snare, HHs, etc to the input of an AUX track. So the levels are reaching the drum sum at the level I set them in the mix.
@wrightonrice

I get a general balance mix between the individual drum tracks first, then use the drum bus for volume thereafter. I may go back and tweak (indiv tracks) if I need to. Hope this helps.

Everytime I put my kick in the bus it ruins it. Any suggestions why this is happening? I always end up just bussing the hi hats open hats clap and snare then keeping the kick and 808 separate
@realisticproductionsLLC

Thanks for watching. Make sure the kick drum channel is at a low enough volume so it doesn’t clip your drum bus input & also make sure you’re using a slow attach. You could also use the side chain filter on your bus compressor & set it at around 80Hz. That will tell the compressor to ignore everything from 80Hz & below. That might ease up the workload the compressor has.

Why would you choose distortion over saturation or an exciter? I mean doesnt distortion damage harmonics as opposed to bringing out harmonics? (Via. Saturation or an exciter) Or is he trying to dull the drums so they fall into the background?

An exicter is literally just saturation, and saturation is just another form of distortion, it literally doesn't matter what you use as long as it sounds good to your ears then who cares

Hey realistic do you eq and compress each sound in addition to the drum bus, or just each sound sent to the bus as shown in the video?
@realisticproductionsLLC
@realisticproductionsLLC 5 жыл бұрын
Hey! I EQ each individual drum. I usually don’t compress them individually unless it’s a live drum kit & the drums are sounding really dynamic. When they’re samples though, I just DJ bus compression to glue them all together.

One question; do you put your 808 on your drum bus?
@realisticproductionsLLC
@realisticproductionsLLC 5 жыл бұрын
Demetrius Deese I personally don’t because I treat the 808 like a bass line & I have a whole different process & setup for bass lines. I’m sure there are thousands of people who put the 808 in their drum sum though!
@NathanBrown-dk5wh
@NathanBrown-dk5wh 5 жыл бұрын
I would put on the same bus after all an 808 it's the low part of a kick if you think about it. Remember in acoustic drum you have a in mix and an out mic that is how I think of the 808 bass and a kick hence the reason an kick with a long tail always clash with an 808.But everyone has they own approach to it
@jackflynn-oakley6137
@jackflynn-oakley6137 5 жыл бұрын
Nathan Brown I mean yeah everyone has they're own approach, there's nothing particularly 'wrong' with sending your 808 to the drum bus but I can't really see why you'd do it? Especially if your splitting the 808 into a sub then driven mid / top. It's just better for control and just generally easier to work with the 808 / sub separately than your drums. Also, if you want to transient shape your drum bus, your 808 would then have the same processing... doesn't make sense to me. Bare people will also tell you not to parallel compress your sub / 808, where as drums are a common thing to apply parallel compression.
