Devaras, a Dubai based restaurant has opened few months ago in Rajaji Nagar, Bangalore. Primarily a Andhra-style vegetarian restaurant, it has customised its recipes to suit the palettes of Bangaloreans. One could find unique dishes on the menu which are unheard of in the South Indian restaurant space like Pal Kova Bun, Gangala Dosa etc.,
First up, had their Pal Kova bun in which soft milk buns are sliced horizontally and filled with Pal Kova, the famous South Indian sweet made by reducing/evaporating the full cream milk. It's a nice attempt and it has worked very well also. Being used to the regular fruit jam/spread, this Palkova laced bun is a refreshing sensation to the palette. Both the bun and the Pal Kova were fresh, which increased the likeability of this dish.
Sambar Mini Idly dip was good, but they have made the Udupi style Sambar without jaggery, which had made the Sambar taste spicy. However, the Bengalurean taste buds that are used to the bella infused Sambar would find it difficult to accomodate. Having said that the spongey idly and the rich Sambar tasted good.
Tasted one of the crispiest Madur Vades in Devaras. It was so brittle and flaky, whereas the regular Madur Vade you get Darshinis is known for its firm texture. Two enormous Madur Vades offered for 40/- will alone fill your stomach.
Gangala Dosa, a Malnad dish which is unknown in the restaurant space is a nice offering at Devaras. This Dosa which looks similar to a Thatte Idly, is steamed first on idly steamer and then roasted on gridle. Hence, it has the softness of idly and crispness of dosa. A tangy chutney made of onion and tamarind is given as an accompaniment for this dosa. Being soaked in ghee, this dish is heavy and one portion can be easily shared by two.
Ghee Green Miripudi dosa is another unique dosa, which is prepared by coating a chutney made of onion, tomato and green chilly, generously on a plain ghee dosa. Spicy and tangy, this dosa is a different take on the simple plain ghee dosa.
To sum things up, Devaras is an addition to the Bangalore's heated tiffin/breakfast space, where one could devour some unique Andhra and Karnataka delicacies. To increase their footfall and emerge successfully, in addition to their unique offerings, Devaras needs to bring in the wow factor in them.
