A short video to help others come to a decision regarding technology.
It is technical in nature and aimed at being educational rather than entertaining.
Remember, that with all this kit she can achieve 6kn in 6kn of wind on a reach using only the genoa and mainsail.
Marc Lombard deserves the respect he receives for his designs. This is a fast cruising ship, not a stripped out racer.
The more you carry, the more you maintain. I have shown a small part of aircon Maintainance here also.
CARRY ON!

Damn, you could almost keep another full-size "backup boat" in that engine room! Maybe you should consider adding an indoor racetrack or host the next Olympics with the extra space.. Kidding aside, I can see how the engine room's spaciousness would be a top consideration. It's got to lower anxiety at sea knowing that if something goes wrong you won't have to crabwalk into a crawlspace modeled after a coffin. It's no wonder I see soo many sailers practicing yoga. It's not for the heath benefits of yoga. It's flexibility and contortion training, so regular boat maintenance can be achieved. Another great video btw.

Hola James & Eva, You guys are doing a great job sharing your knowledge and obviously have had some adventures along the way. I like your 'just outrun the pirates' solution and I am very glad that worked out for you. I have added a new tactic to help deal with them if the need should arise. I now carry 400' of black floating poly line to trail behind Blue Bamboo in the hopes that I can dodge and weave until the approaching pirate vessel crosses over the line and picks it up with its prop. Keep up the good work, enjoy your adventures and sail your boat well!!!! John from Blue Bamboo in the Chesapeake.

Was a traditional shaft drive available. The sail drive has always made me nervous. As a youth working on my folks boat late 60's the inboard outboard was very popular I saw so many trashed in the yard. Aluminum housing always in the water. One season of not replacing the zinc's they were toast. So I've always either have shaft or on smaller boats outboards. Cheers from Northern California!!

Hi James, really great video! You are getting good at this. It is never too long or too technical. Please feel free to expand in as much detail as you can. We are lapping it up. There is , as you know, very little reliable and trustworthy informations in details about the Neel. It is whether infomercial or very negative under informed opinion.. This technical compartment is really the best in the market for a vessel this size. In a ideal world the redundancy of two engines (and two rudders) is very attractive. Sail drives are are a very bad technical solution for many reasons, forced upon us by lazy builders...but every boat is a compromise, and the 51 has incredible appeal. If you were buying now, knowing what you know, what would be your choice of options? (aircon, genset, watermaker, alternator, battery,...) Thanks a lot for the effort. Really appreciate it. Cheers.

From the free design point of view: What space was taking away in order to have a spacious Machinery and Engine room? I mean u can hang a queen hammak while doing your laundry and drinking wine. It is all a trade off, they could have made a bigger fore room, or create storage below cockloon floor etc. Just exploring your mindset when it comes to space distribution....back in the day, we sailed on a John Alden 60 footer, and it was unconfortable for 1.5 people to be working in the engine-machinery room, a trade off.
@carryonsailing

Room space isn't an issue tbh. Space isn't a concern at all on the 51. Lombard hit the spot with his design.

Another terrific video. If you ever see me on a Neel (reasonable probability), they owe you a referral fee. I really appreciate the straight forward approach. And I wonder what it would cost and if it's even possible to get a shaft drive on a Neel 51? (I know sail drives are more maneuverable, (maybe mostly in cats) - I've been sailing 28-32' that are always determined to back up to port so a little less shouldn't be a problem.). I get the impression that sail drives are great for boat builders, until they get wet, then they're just a huge liability. I also wonder what a shaft drive instead of a sail drive would do for insurance premiums.

What do you think of the difference between the 51 and the new 52? I don’t like the look of the new 52, preferring the angry birds look of your boat but what I like in the 52 is the second cabin down in the central hull, which of course means that the tech space has to be shifted aft to accommodate it. I’m assuming the reduced space would still be ok? It’s quite the cavern in your boat and it looks mostly empty compared to how most boat engine /tech rooms are laid out.

Would a 20 horse outboard on the back of each ama be a reasonable propulsion solution, freeing up room in the hull and eliminating sail drive propeller issues?
@carryonsailing
@carryonsailing 2 жыл бұрын
No definitely not. If you wanted to motor into wind away from a leeshore it would be fatal. Also the armas are submerged and in the air depending what tack you are on.

@@carryonsailing Thanks for rapid response and experienced insight. I thought maybe you could add the redundancy and handling of a catamaran, and eliminate the hull leaking risk. Even so, I have watched a lot of videos of folks working on their boat and they are all cramped and contorted, always uncomfortable. I have never seen anything as nice as that tech and engine room. I think combined with the main floor master suite, that is a potent selling point. Keep these great videos coming!!

Hi, it would be cheaper to just get a mini split and less maintainance. Find a spot for the square box chiller thing somewhere outside if there is space. Avoid webasto aircon. Generator: Onan Cummins or whisper (master volt). Try and get the mini split with a high Seer rating. Something over 20 Seer.

@@carryonsailing thanks for the advice. I thinking of just maxing out on panels and lion batteries, inverter. No genset or central air. Less holes in the boat and things to break.

Interesting stuff, thank you for all the detail... the more the better! With all the space, may I ask why more of the electrical buss lines and things like the Auto Pilot brain are not nestled up high above the water line? I understand you wand the heavy stuff low, but then all the tools and stuff are on the uppers. Also I'd rather work on electrical standing rather than bending over. Of course I love your boat, don't get me wrong!

LOL, thanks for answering, probably a silly question from me, who only sailed dingys. Probably got to thinking about catastrophic conditions due to the utube vid of the fellow who near lost his monohull after setting out on a shakedown with a couple of through holes open and his pumps powered from a battery bank strategically positioned in his bilge cavity. He was saved by the coast guard. It has got me thinking though of the structural implications of taking on water in the center hull of a tri (-if-) your pumps fail - do the beams to the floats flex?, or can you release load on one side?

If I give you my bank account info, will you send me some money to cover my overdraft? Lol I didn't quite get the part about losing your hull seal and getting water in the gear box. Is the gearbox right up against the hull with just one seal for both? Is your fresh water maker a series of filters with osmosis diaphragms like a unit you would install under your kitchen sink in your house? I was a machinist mate in the US navy back in the 60s so I love learning about the technical aspects of your boat. I ran and maintained steam powered propulsion systems with a 400 pound system and turbines. Our fresh water was made by a huge distillation plant. Our spaces were huge multilevel but the minimum temp in there when running was 135 degrees. Looking forward to seeing more! Oh, is your autopilot run off GPS?
@carryonsailing
@carryonsailing 3 жыл бұрын
Werner thanks for the comment, the problem is the prop. shaft seal. It is wedged forward if you catch fishing line or anything else. Hard to explain but you can see in later videos. It is no biggie if you could remove all the water and oil from the transmission like you can on a YANMAR engine/ saildrive. Hence why I would recommend a Yanmar saildrive at present. The water maker is a series of filters and then reverse osmosis like you describe. It is very efficient these days and no distillation required. Autopilot is run from GPS. We have 3 different GPS units and one fluxgate compass. Also thank you for protecting our freedom during your time in the US navy. KR James and Eva.

@@carryonsailing Thanks for the sentiment! However, like any kid at the time I was in it for the fun and adventure. "See the world and all that." I found I was smarter than the average sailor and much more ambitious. I made rank quickly and if I'd have stayed in could have gone up a long way. It was the stupidity of my seniors that did me in, so got out after a few years. This, of course, was during the Viet Nam conflict, which I found was to bizarre for words. Enough of that. The wonders of Google! I looked up the saildrive of both the Volvo and Yanmar. I thought they went straight back out of the hull, but they go down out the bottom. I guess the difference is just the way they are sealed because the basic design looks the same. Do the blades fold on the prop when you are under sail in order to reduce drag? I'm the one that used to take all sorts of mechanical things apart when I was a kid just to see how they were made. Luckily they were already broken and discarded so didn't get the wrath of God come down on me. Lol
@carryonsailing
@carryonsailing 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like quite an adventure you have had in life Werner. I would love to hear it over a pint. Yes the prop is a folding one from Volvo. It is required and doesn't affect docking at all. The seal is under the anodes. Easy to get to once hauled out.

Have you read The Sand Pebbles by Richard McKenna? It's about an American Navy machinist mate on a Yangtze gunboat in the 1920s.
