In this video I offer a brief critique of Dungeon Meshi's opening sequence by pointing out its thematic incongruity with regards to the rest of the show.

I know what you mean but fighting a dragon at their level isn't so easy and neither is going deeper in the dungeon without normal food. Laios think's the dragons digestion is slow too. Trust me tho this anime gets so fucking crazy later on people will put amongst the best anime of all time.

The chilchuck best “boy” in the description made me crack up, but returning to the topic of the video I gave myself the explanation that that they don’t want to arrive stressed and tired to fight the dragon, and the reason they seem so calm it’s more of a coping mechanism to not think about the fact that they’re expedition could be futile and well laios is just laios being incredibly obsessed with the biology of the monster so much that sometimes as states find difficult to express himself in the best manner

For real I was thinking this when I first read the manga when it was released and was hoping they would change some stuff for the anime

It's something that gets mentioned further in the story, but basically they believed they'd be able to resurect her no problem. And the story gets really dark and has very rich lore as it progresses

Oh, the world-building in general is fantastic. Bene really enjoying it. I'm currently on ep 9 or 10. Hmm, didn't Laios explicitly ask Maricille whether anyone had ever been resurrected from dragon dung? They definitely weren't "sure" and time was absolutely of the essence, since the longer the digestion process took, the lesser the chance she'd be resurrectable.

@@theoverthinker348 you're right they did talk about it, but I guess it's just a matter of the tone the author was going for rather than the character's logic. I enjoy the light hearted tone it has and unseriousness of most of the plot, reminds me of mob psycho for some reason

Im glad I'm not the only one bothered by the intro! Every episode they just take a slow stroll through the dungeon all the while I'm thinking "isn't falin STILL in that dragons stomach!?" Plus, other then laios the other two arent comfortable with eating monsters so what they could've done is have them rush to save falin all while laios uses this chance to get the other two to try monster meat and getting them used to the idea. (quickly cooked sinced they should be rushing to save her) and after saving falin they can meet sensi (now with falin) and actually take their time cooking and preparing the food. They can even have falin be the one nervous to try monster meat for comedy

Oh, there were numerous other ways to go about it. I'm personally fine with Senshi's role as is, I'd just be satisfied with them not being in a rush to save a potentially potentially digesting comrade. I'm not sure whether it's ironic or appropriate that they're learning to cook and eat dungeon monsters while their friend has already been eaten by one.

Cooking faster wouldn't save them time. Better to make good food.

@jacjac7154 My point is that they should be in a hurry to save her. So, with each passing day, the pressure to get to her should grow. And cooking faster would save them time since they can get to eating and go on their way sooner. It won't be the tastiest meal out their but it would be enough since their goal is to save falin

@@sprig_gen I think its a fair criticism because the show doesn't focus on this as much as it should. but between stops to eat they ARE hurrying. the show points out several times that rushing something isn't alway the best way to go about things. they could rush through the eating process but they'd be sacrificing rest and nutrient that could end up costing them later on. I may be reaching here but a big theme at this point in the series in the "quick" way isn't always the "right" way.

@jacjac7154 That's a fair point. Now that you meantion it, I do think the point the story tries to make is that rushing could make things worse (for the reasons you said). But I don't think they present that point that well since while they do meantion falin every now and then, they don't act like their that concerned, they are still worried about her, and I'm sure they do want to get their sooner rather than later, but the show so far doesn't show them being all that worried for her. This might just be my opinion on it, but I don't think the show presents the importance of saving falin that well. She feels like a second thought with eating food being the first

I think you're putting WAY to much importance on an intro sequence.

Fair enough, though this wasn't JUST an intro sequence. It also sets a goal for the characters and acts as the main driver of the plot going forward. The primary thing I can't get over is the character motivation, which is the impetus for the whole series (i.e. saving private Falin), being so glaringly incongruous with the rest of the story. It is used as a poorly thought out excuse to justify the "exotic" cooking elements of the show, while ignoring everything else (i.e. the urgency element inherent in such a plot driver and character motivator). Hope that made sense.

@theoverthinker348 I think I would have understood your point more if you focused it on the character motivation aspect rather than specifically the intro, but that might just be me. I do understand the criticism that in the first episode especially the characters urgency doesn't match the stories urgency. I do think this was mostly solved for me later in the first episode by learning the dragons digestion time and how death works in this universe. I'm a fan of the manga this is based off of so I'm trying not to over explain but this is very much only an early problem for the series.

it seems like it was made to sell an upcoming videogame about it which explains why the pacing is weirdly similar to that of a dungeon crawling videogame so when the players do play it they dont get the cognitive dissonance between the two mediums
